Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Pinzon Santoku Knives and Bamboo Cutting Board SetCustomer Review: Sharp but delicate Summary: 3 Stars
The price I paid was $15, which is not a bad price considering what you get. But the knives are very prone to dulling, so be careful how you use them. I mean, use your typical knife common sense about what types of surfaces to cut, but be extra careful with these guys. I tend to keep whole ginger in the freezer (it lasts longer), and I accidentally forgot how frozen they were when I tried to cut into one recenty. I attempted to slice off a small 1" piece with my santoku knife, and found that I had actually "ripped" the blade. Not one of my brighter moments, but with my heavier duty Henkel's chef's knife, frozen ginger is not a problem, so it was my bad judgment. But the bottom line is that these blades are good if you're going to cut through vegetables or other soft items. Do not use these knives on anything hard/semi-hard.
Customer Review: Slick addition to the kitchen Summary: 4 Stars
I caught this on sale for $20 and was pleasantly surprised by the quality for the price. I was a little leery based on the reviewer who thought the knives were cheap, but they were much sharper than I was led to believe! It's really convenient to have a couple of knives right at hand in the cutting board, especially Santoku-style knives that work so well for common tasks like chopping veggies. As for the complaint that the board lacks feet, a set of 99 cent sticky feet fixed that for me in about 2 seconds. It's a fairly heavy board anyway, so depending on your counter surface you many find you can do without or just take advantage of some rubber shelf liner beneath it to keep it from sliding.
Overall, it's been a showy and functional new addition to the kitchen so far.
Customer Review: You MUST oil the wood before use!! Summary: 3 Stars
Bamboo wood MUST be oiled before use, and once a month or so afterward. It is the driest wood on earth, and does not generate nor hold its own moisture. Instead it absorbs moisture from the environment, which is one reason bamboo grows in humid climates. The wood will split easily, or absorb water as others here have noted. It is recommended that you oil the wood every day for a week before using. You will notice that the oil sinks in within a few hours. I notice in the photo of the product that the wood is split on the top. If you oil it several times before using, and then once a month afterward, it won't split. Don't soak it in water either, wipe the board to clean it off, or use a spray bottle to wet a little. Otherwise, oil, oil, oil!
Customer Review: Very Sharp Deal Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this as a Friday Sale for under $20, and it is a wonderful set. The cutting board is well made, and heavy. I've used bamboo utensils for cooking for years, and find them to be very durable. The knives in the set are wonderful - well balanced, and very nice to use. This was for my son for a Christmas gift, and he loves it. I've used the knives just a couple times, and am pleased with their quality and weight. They are well balanced, and very well made. The storage in the cutting board serves his needs in his limited space very nicely, and should serve him for many years. A great deal for the price, and I wish I bought more. It's not been offered at the same price since. These would be the two knives most often used.
Customer Review: Who knew? Summary: 5 Stars
I bought these for my kids for the cutting board, since the price was so great, I wasn't that concerned about how good the knives were. All in all for the Fifteen bucks I paid for this, they are awesome and I'm waiting to buy more. My son loves his. I also gave them the Chef's Illustrated recommended Victorinox Chef's knife and a (also Chef's Illustrated recommended) manual knife sharpener. (kitchen themed Christmas) all in all, everyone is happy! And the blades sharpen up quite nicely... My son says the drawer is magnitized so the knives don't fall out. All that for fifteen smackers...complaining about them is silly. No great knife is going to come with another knife and a cutting board for 30 bucks or less. Jeesh, people!
