Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Pinzon Electronic Clock Timer [Amazon Frustration-Free Packaging]Customer Review: Good timer Summary: 5 Stars
1. To keep from accidentally stopping or clearing a timer I put it in clock display mode. Only the mode buttons remain active. When an interval has elapsed and the timer is beeping I can stop the noise with the stop/clear button in clock mode. People have complained about accidentally bumping the clear and start/stop buttons while timing - this prevents that problem. The clock display indicates when the timers are running.
2. I put a small piece of electrical tape over the battery cover to keep it from accidentally slipping off. The battery lasts a long time some the small inconvenience of having to remove the tape is well worth trouble.
3. Since the count down and count up timers can run concurrently I use this feature for "tickler" timing tasks. I might, for instance, want to see how long a computer can run on a full battery charge. I set the interval timer to something like ten minutes and start the count up timer. Every ten minutes I get a reminder to check the computer while the count up timer keeps track of total elapsed time. By pushing the timer button and double clicking the start/stop button the tickler is reset and restarted. Very easy and convenient. This could be handy for any number of tasks - watering the garden, for example, when you want to check how long it takes to get water to a desired depth. It's also great for baking when you don't know how long it is going to take and want to check it every few minutes. The ability to have the second timer keep track of the total is a terrific feature.
4. I'm the sort of guy who tends to be "all thought and no action." I have found that I can set the timer for 30 minutes and just get going on a project knowing that I can quit when the timer beeps. Instead of having to "motivate" myself by planning everything out ahead of time I, as Nike would say, "Just Do It!" So far it's been very effective. It separates strategy and tactics. Doing a job is tactical. Planning a job is strategic. It's difficult to keep my strategic thought from "micromanaging." When I micromanage the result is that I sit in the chair and imagine every little step but never get around to getting up and actually doing the job. It's been decomposed into such tiny, boring little steps that there's no interest in the remaining activity. I think this is probably because I've programmed machines for a living. What works for a computer doesn't motivate a human. When creating tasks for a human it's essential to leave enough problem solving behavior in the actual job to keep it interesting.
When I'm in my "30 minute cocoon" I can concentrate completely (and creatively!) on the task at hand without my mind racing ahead to the "next step." That's because I'm done when the timer beeps. There's no need to plan ahead. I can go back and sit in my easy chair for that part of it.
This sounds melodramatic but this little gadget has been a life changer for me. For my purposes it works perfectly.
P.S. - It's been said before but remember to put the clock in 24 hour mode by pushing on the gray button on the back before attempting to set the time. Then push and hold the clock mode button until the screen goes blank. Enter the time including the seconds. The time will be set when the last second digit is entered. Put the clock back in AM/PM mode if desired.
