Customer Review: Has Pimpernel Quality Disappeared?

I have always appreciated the quality of Pimpernel Placemats. I have owned quite a few sets over the years and still have many of them in excellent condition.
However, about a year ago I purchased 4 of the Tuscan Scene placemats; the image is beautiful but the quality on these is extremely poor. The edges have severely deteriorated,leaving long, white scrapes where the image has disappeared. A few such spots also exist within the image itself. I have used and cleaned (without any harsh or abrasive cleaners) these mats the same as all those I've had in the past.
Has the quality of Pimpernel disappeared since Portmeirion has taken over? Was there something defective with the Tuscan Scene product? Twice I have contacted Portmeirion about this problem by email and have received no response. This makes me suspicious, and at the present I am hesitant to
purchase any Pimpernel products.
Update: I have been told by a retailer that Pimpernel Placemats are now made in China. If this is so, I now have my answer.
