These sancerre dishes are fabulous. I have the whole set, and love that they stack effortlessly in a drawer and take up very little space. I like the heaviness of this set, and feel that it's sturdy enough to give to a toddler so they can eat out of a real bowl. This size is especially good for serving vegetables or mac 'n cheese to children or for other smaller tasks such as setting jello.
Description of Pillivuyt Porcelain 1-1/2-Cup, 5-1/2-Inch Sancerre-Style Gratin Dish
Pillivuyt's Sancerre line is a classically simple and clean design that focuses on the appealing lines of rounded shapes. The Sancerre gratin dishes incorporate that simple idea with all the expected features of French gratin dishes - even, efficient heat distribution and more wide than deep to expose more of the surface of the ingredients for browning and crisping more of the contents. These dishes have no sharp inner corners or edges that can catch and hold food, so they are extremely easy to clean. The impermeable glaze also ensures that baked-on food will come off with minimal effort. As with all Pillivuyt dishes, these gratins are dishwasher, freezer, microwave, and oven safe - even under the broiler. They will not discolor, stain, or retain odors or flavors and the glaze is guaranteed not to craze. The 5 1/2 inch diameter gratin is a very good size for individual crusted dishes such as cobbler or pot pie. It's also perfect for serving chopped garnish items (onions, cheese, tomatoes) or for tidbits, relishes, and snacks when you're entertaining. 1 1/2 cup capacity.This round dish has shallow, flared sides that focus most of the oven's heat onto the larger surface area and so is characterized as a gratin dish by these telltale features. However, this petite 5-1/2-inch-diameter dish is probably better suited for individual dessert soufflés or 1-1/2-cup servings of pudding and can even be used as a little mis en place bowl. The thin even walls on this dish provide the ideal heat conduction for a superbly executed recipe and enable the dish to retain its temperature (either hot or cold) at the table. An exquisite specimen of fine French pottery, this porcelain baking dish is a milky white color and has the rounded lines and flared lip that comprise the style of the Sancerre collection.
Family-founded in 1818, the Pillivuyt porcelain factory still employs skilled artisans who use the proprietary porcelain recipe and the original time-honored traditions of handcrafting each piece. Replacement molds are all handmade by craftspeople who have spent many years in training, and who shape them to the level of perfection that this superior bakeware requires. The result is a tough porcelain base that can withstand temperature extremes, making this baker safe to move among the oven, freezer, microwave, or broiler. And, with a little liquid in the baker, the pan can even be placed over a diffused flame on the stovetop. All pieces are glazed and fired at temperatures of about 2,500 degrees Fahrenheit, which produces a non-porous, rock-hard finish that easily cleans up by hand or in the dishwasher.
