I ordered this dinnerware from Overstock, because they had a deal on a 48 piece (12person) set. I was concerned about the reviews referring to its tendency to absorb heat, but I have not found this to be a problem. I am able to handle it fresh from the dishwasher and even after heating up a cup of tea in the microwave. It appears to have been discontinued, so I have scrambled to buy as many accessory pieces as I can. Pfaltzgraff created an expansive collection of serving pieces to match, so I have quite a lot of it now. I will say that it is much larger than any other dinnerware I have ever seen--the dinner plates are almost 12" in diameter, an unnecessarily huge size, and only just barely fit in my cupboard (the only reason I didn't give it 5 stars). I usually use the lunch plates, which are 9" in diameter. The bowls are huge, but substantial, and hold anything from cereal to soup to stew. I have even used them to serve pasta. They are certainly less likely to slop their contents, though they may trick you into serving larger portions! I love the mugs, which hold my usual 18 ounces of coffee. I have had dinnerware sets with little cups and saucers that I never used and which only took up cabinet space. I bought up all kinds of accessories--the pitcher, cheese plate, serving plate, etc. Some of the accessories are selling out, so I'm glad I got them as soon as I did.
I can't speak to their tendency to chip yet. I had another large set of Pfaltzgraff, not so heavy, that had held up pretty well for the 10 years I used them before this set. They did scratch from the use of utensils over time, but not so that I really noticed. The background on the Evening Sun is less uniformly light than those were, which should make wear less noticeable. A few of the old plates were chipped, but I got a lot of use out of them. I am not sure my experience with them is good for comparison, however, since the Evening Sun pattern is much more of an earthen ware. All in all, I am really happy for the amount of crockery I got for the price and the colors are beautiful.
