Customer Review: My Favorite and Most-Used Kitchen Gadget

After more than 8 years of frequent use, the blades have finally dulled on my Pedrini Tomato Slicer and it's time to replace it. Which I'm doing immediately, because I can't live without it! It (along with a couple of knives) is my favorite and most-used kitchen tool, and has saved me hours of time over the years. I love tomatoes and use this all the time. Cleanup is super easy, too.

I suspect that the reviewers who complain about dull and bent blades, squashed and torn tomatoes, etc, are using it improperly - trying to push it down into the fruit like you would do with a very sharp, straight-bladed knife. Don't do that with the slicer. The trick with the slicer is to saw back and forth rapidly and very gently, with practically no downward pressure at all. When you get about 3/4 through the tomato, flip the whole thing (the tomato with the slicer still embedded in it) over upside-down and then saw upward to finish slicing. If you do it this way, you will be amazed at the beautiful perfect slices you get in no time at all!

Most grocery store tomatoes will fit through it. But Beefsteak and some other heirloom varieties are too large. No problem, just cut a few slices off the end first (if the tomato is a little too big) or cut the tomato in half and slice each half separately (if it is way too big.) Check that the tomato will fit BEFORE you start slicing, by laying the slicer on top of the tomato. I did bend one of the blades on my slicer by trying to force a tomato through it that was just slightly too large. But I still continued to use the slicer with the bent blade without any problem for several more years.

Also, large tomatoes often have a tough, fibrous core that the slicer won't easily cut through. These tomatoes should be cored like an apple before slicing (instead of just removing a small cone around the stem scar like you do with smaller tomatoes.) But you'd want to do that anyway - even if you were using a knife instead - because such cores are woody and unpleasant to eat.

The reviewers who warned not to touch the top (unserrated) edges of the blades are right. Although those edges aren't sharpened, the blades are so thin that even the unsharpened edges could give you a nasty cut. But there is no reason why you would ever need to touch them. When using the tool, hold it by the handle only. There is no need to press down on the top of the blades or on the frame that holds them - doing so would not only be very awkward, but also could squash the tomato or bend the blades on your slicer.

I would rate this item 5 stars if only they would make it wider so that large tomatoes could fit through it without cutting them into smaller pieces first. It is impossible to slice a tomato with a knife either as perfectly or nearly as quickly as this slicer does it.
