Customer Review: Learned to live with design shortcomings and am happy, so far

We bought this to replace a Goldstar 700 watt microwave small that wouldn't hold two deep bowls that my wife and I use to cook breakfast cereal. Each bowl took 2 to 3 minutes; 5 minutes all together. This often meant cold cereal in winter mornings on weekdays when we're rushed. Heating 4 cups of water to brew tea (not quite boiling) took 12 minutes. With this 1300 watt Panasonic, we can cook cereal for both of us at once in about 3 minutes. Brewing 4 cups of water for tea now takes 7 minutes. If we found out at the supper table that the chicken thigh or pork chop is under-cooked, correcting the problem takes 30-40 seconds.
Packaged information says Inverter Technology allows the unit to run at less than full power when you set its power to under 100%, without turning the magnetron tube(the component that puts out the microwave) on and off. If you watch and listen while you're using it with power setting at less than 100%, it's obvious. In contrast, on all my previous microwave oven, it's very obvious that the magnetron turns on and off. All else being equal, this feature should prolong the life of the magnetron. 1300 watt is a lot of power for such a unit this size. I can see prolonged use at full power can shorten its life. We noticed this unit pulls air from its bottom and blow's it out of its left side, so it's important not block the vents on its left. This design allow us to tuck it against the back and right wall on our kitchen table, and leave us with more table space than a similar-size Sharp unit we had.
We picked this unit because, of all mid-size unit displayed at Target, it has the largest glass plate(indicative of cooking space) for the outer dimension. This makes the small control console an acceptable compromise. The buttons are not as sensitive as other units we had. We discovered that it works better if we press the buttons with our finger knuckle or the finger nail tip on our thumb. I've learned to stick a few fingers under the control panel to grab it and use my thumb nail to press down on the release button to open the door. This prevents the unit from sliding back. No doubt the unit is too light for the force it takes to push power on the door-latch release, but I can appreciate its light weight when I take the unit off the table to clean under it.
The pricier units in all brands typically offered more features, not necessarily better quality. We finally pulled out our 600 watt full-size Sear microwave oven from our attic and donated it a couple of years because our needs have outgrown it a long time ago. I'm not concerned about what Made-in-China implies to its quality. iPhones and iPads are made in China!
