Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of PUR CRF-950Z 2-Stage Water Pitcher Replacement Filter, 3-PackCustomer Review: New filter design doesn't work with older water dispensers Summary: 1 Stars
This filter doesn't fit properly with my Pur Water Dispenser DS-1800--water stops up at the top instead of filtering to the bottom. I thought I had ordered the wrong filter since it didn't work properly and didn't have the orange indicator tab at the top.
However, it turns out this is Pur's new design--it's "supposed" to fit and filter properly. And instead of the indicator tab, Pur includes stickers to put on the kitchen calendar so the consumer will know when to replace the filter. But I much prefer the orange indicator tab where I could actually see when it's time to replace the filter rather then guesstimate and replace a filter too soon.
Regardless the sticker indicator feature is moot, since the filter doesn't actually fit or filter properly.
I love my Pur water dispenser DS-1800--with the previous filter design, I better tasting water than most bottled water or Brita. Now, like other reviewers, I may have to switch if I can't even buy a Pur filter that actually fits.
Customer Review: beware!! poorly manufactured.... Summary: 1 Stars
PROS: Britta lost its certification for lead filtering since the requirements for lead by the NSF changed. I really liked the idea that the PUR filter filters out a much larger list of contaminants as compared with the Britta which only filters out three substances, LEAD not being one of them.(Note: PUR gets lead certification from another company, not NSF......stange)
CONS: filters very slowly, poor manufacturing, there are small, white, hair like pieces on around this filter, some I could wipe off with my finger, I'm not sure what they are, but didn't want my kids ingesting it. Also, there was some loose plastic and the filter itself looks scratched in the light. This made me worry about the integrity of the unit as a whole and I phoned PUR (Procter and Gamble) and they were very helpful and would look into the problem.
I landed up getting a refund from them, but I would really like to see a well manufactured product that filters a broad range of substances......... ..???????
Customer Review: NOT AS ADVERTISED: NO MONITOR ON THE WATER PITCHER Summary: 1 Stars
like the other reviewer, i don't think i got the correct filters. i didn't open mine, but these don't look like the typical filters with the familiar monitor on top. i've heard rumors that the filters with the monitor are no longer being produced, but i hope not... i chose to return this item and purchase a dented box item which i hope are the correct filters. if PUR stopped making the monitored pitchers, i'm gonna be very upset...
IN ADDITION, the description on the box i received said that these filters are for water coolers and bottles - it said NOTHING about compatibility with pitchers, unlike the description.
UPDATE 4/16/2007: i contacted PUR regarding the filter compatility. the company says that all newer pitchers accept the CRF-950Z. however, since june 2006, the filters "no longer have the u-shaped life indicator on the top." and that SUCKS. maybe it didn't work well, but i suspect financial incentives for that elimination. the email came from [...] - we should all complain.
Customer Review: Water as clean as before but miss monitor feature Summary: 4 Stars
Me and my family have been using Pur filters for over five years and we love them. Leave it to NSF to see what they do filter out and what they don't, but Pur makes water taste clean and refreshing. We've been using them in Chicago, Los Angeles, Ann Arbor and Baton Rouge, and in all these places water from Pur filter would taste better then almost any brand of bottled water we tried.
Fortunately, we've stocked up on "old-fashioned" filters with freshness monitors right before Costco stopped selling them and switched to Brita. When our stockpile ran out we had no choice but to get "new and improved" kind. While there is no discernible difference in either speed of filtration, or quality of the outcome, we really miss the monitor feature.
Well, the box says that each filter may be used for about 40 gallons of water, and that seems to be in line with our usage of old filters. So now we going to guesstimate how much water we use each week, and change the filters accordingly.
Customer Review: 3 hours per pitcher Summary: 1 Stars
How long do you expect a water filter to last? Maybe the advertised 60 days?
I make two pitchers of water a day. My last four Pur filters (from two separate boxes ordered months apart) have gone "slow" on me within 3 weeks of starting them. 1-3 hours for a pitcher of water is not acceptable, and since this behavior is new within the last year, it's rather suggestive of a company trying to pressure us into buying a new box sooner than they advertise we'd need to.
I'm in Mountain View, CA, where the unfiltered water is pretty good, so it's not an issue of my input water having more pollutants than average. (For reference, the water here is better than Santa Fe, Chicago, DC, LA, and just about everywhere else in the US. So if you live in a place with water about as hard or harder than in any of those places, expect these filters to slow down on you even sooner than they do for me.)
