Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of PUR CRF-950Z 2-Stage Water Pitcher Replacement Filter, 3-PackCustomer Review: A shadow of a once-great product Summary: 2 Stars
In my recently deleted review, I praised these PUR filters for their performance and the Automatic Safety Monitor. Removing the Monitor has now made the filter much less reliable.
PUR claims in an email reply that consumers prefer the calendar sticker to the Automatic Safety Monitor:
"Hi there,
As of June/2006, the PUR 2 Stage Pitcher filter no longer has an indicator life monitor; there is now a calendar sticker you put on the pitcher.
I'm sorry you are not enjoying the improved version of our product. Many consumers have contacted us praising the new version and telling us how much better they like it. A lot of testing and research takes place before a new product enters the market or before changes are made to an existing product. We test our products very thoroughly, not only to ensure the safety of our products, but also to determine and prove the benefits of the new or upgraded model.
Change is difficult because there are always loyal consumers who like a product just the way it is. Unfortunately, it's usually not practical to manufacture both the old and new versions of a product. Nevertheless, I will certainly share your comments and experiences with our PUR Brand team.
Have a great day.
PUR Team"
The newest reviews here are a more realistic reflection of how the average and once-loyal PUR customer feels. A calender sticker doesn't know the difference between a single user, a couple like my wife and me, and a thirsty family of six. People who rely on a PUR pitcher or dispenser for health reasons must now be especially careful to monitor the filter life themselves. Throwing out a filter before it needs to be replaced is expensive and wasteful. Using a filter past the end of its life will put impurities back into the water.
The filter's overall performance is on a par with competitors but the Automatic Safety Monitor was PUR's strongest selling point. Sad to say, Procter & Gamble has turned the innovator in water filtration into another also-ran.
Customer Review: Warning - New Design does not work with PUR Water Coolers!! Summary: 1 Stars
I bought a pair of these at Target last week and went to install them in my PUR branded Water Cooler (made by Kaz, Inc. under license). Well after installing the new filters the first thing I noticed is that the orange filter life indicator at the top of the unit was gone. I looked in the box, and there is now a sticker that, long story short, is just there to remind you to buy new filters in 2 months. Okay, while that may work for the faucet mounted kind (which I also have) I was not happy about that. But the worst was yet to come. . .
When I placed the water tank on top of the filters (which is what you do with the PUR water coolers) I couldn't get the tank to sit on top and dispense the water properly. The new filters stick up about 1" or so higher than the old design. Could I have installed them wrong somehow? Nope. THE IDIOTS AT PUR DIDN'T BOTHER TO NOTICE THIS REDESIGN OF THE FILTERS MADE THEM INCOMPATIBLE WITH THEIR OWN WATER COOLERS!!!
Needless to say, the tank fell of the top of my cooler, cracking and then spilling water all over the floor - and worse, making me now in need of a new water tank.
I called PUR. They were closed. Called the next day and spoke with a lady who I swear knew very little english. I explained the problem and I think she tried telling me that she had seen a memo about this, and the solution was to send out 2 complimentary filters (presumably with the old design.) She also instructed me to return the 2 new filters I just installed back to the store (in this case Target, who I'm sure is going to think I'm just bringing back my old, used filters.)
This still doesn't address the issue of the broken water tank, which means I also need to call Kaz and explain and hope they send a new one (which they won't, as it's now out of warranty since I've had it for about a year and hey - look - they are now discontinued.)
BUYER BEWARE!
Customer Review: why do they take forever to filter? Summary: 4 Stars
When i bought the pitcher the filter that came with it worked great. filled quickly and i thought everyone on this site was nuts who complained about the slow filtering. Then i got the refills. they come with cute little stickers that you place on the front of your pitcher to remind you when to change the filter and i like that. i also have the pitcher that has the light on top that turns from green to orange to red when ready to be changed. so from the first use of these filters i realized what everyone was talking about. my goodness when will i drink water?? should i buy bottled while i am waiting? this cant be right. it is taking forever. Now as the filter gets older and older the waiting gets longer and longer. i dont know what the problem is but many of us are sharing it. i intend to call Pur about this. just been very busy with christmas. there has to be a solution or answer to this situation. it may just be a bad batch of filters or we (i) am not prepping it right. i dont know. but i am going to find out. life is too short to wait 1/2 hour for a glass of water. but i refuse to call them worthless or a ripoff because the pitcher i bought came with the exact same filter and it worked great. after i talk to pur i may amend this post.
edit: Soak the filter standing up and you will not have a problem. put it in a jar that is slim enough to keep it upright and covered with water. i now give it 5 stars especially since someone gave me a brita and the pur taste so much better.
Customer Review: Great! (as long as your tap water's already good...) Summary: 3 Stars
First bought these filters (along with the dispenser) a year ago because we live in Mexico City and, uhm, the tap water is...yeah, dicey. Also because I've camped with a PUR filter for years, and trust their products. If you do some comparing and see what these filters and Britas filter out, you'll see that these really are a lot better, plus the PUR water tastes better! HOWEVER, unlike PUR's camping filters (which I've dipped in some pretty nasty water sources and never once had bad results), these seem to be picky about the water you put in them. And it's not like our tap water is even that bad...actually, it looks clean (no minerals, no cloudiness, no sediment...ie: all the bad stuff is microscopic), but a lot of our filters seem to clog up after 2 weeks of use, rather than the 2 months they're supposed to last (and no, I'm not drinking 2.5 gallons of water every day). They still filter, but really slowly, and then gradually get slower and slower. About the time they're filtering 1 liter of water every 12 hours, which might be after 3 weeks of use or we MIGHT make it to the two month mark (at which point we're buying bottled water to compensate for what the PUR is not filtering, blowing the whole cost-effectiveness of having the thing in the first place), we get fed up and swap out the filter. And, as another reviewer noted, shaking the filter doesn't do a darn thing; neither does re-soaking the filter or even back-flushing it (which I have tried). Some of them...a lot of them just crap out early!
Customer Review: Good product, but be careful.... Summary: 5 Stars
I have had a Pur water cooler for about three years now, back when the filters were flat on top with the little gauge that showed you when to change the filter.
I love Pur water products but it you have anything besides the pitcher, I would not buy these online. Proctor & Gamble changed the design to the one currently pictured (with the very high domed top) and they DO NOT fit the coolers. I am pretty sure they are okay with pitchers though. Over a year later, the redesigned filters are FINALLY making their way to the stores, but given my recent experience buying filters online (through another retailer) there are now three different styles floating (the flat topped filter, the one pictured, and the brand new one) around in stores' inventories, and I think they all have the same item numbers.
The new design is still domed, but much shorter, plus there are three very distinct holes on the top, which you can clearly see on the packaging. Also, I was told by Pur customer service that the filter must have a lot number, stamped on the bottom, starting in the 8000s.
So, if you are trying to purchase these filters for your cooler, go to a store: you cannot rely on pictures and item numbers, at least in my experience.
Also, many reviewers seem to be upset because there is no longer a "gauge" to tell you when to change the filter. I never go by this- use common sense and change the filters when the water starts to taste bad.
