Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of PUR CR-6000C 2-Stage Oval Water Pitcher with LED Indicator

Customer Review: Pitcher works great and fits in fridge
Summary: 5 Stars

We have naturally very bad tasting and unhealthy water in my area (heavy on chlorine and lead). I wouldn't be surprised it there weren't a bacterial scare at some point, as there have been a few in surrounding neighborhoods. The local government recommends filtering the water and I love the new, slim PUR pitcher. It fits perfectly in the fridge and the indicator light for the pitcher is pretty spot-on. I'd been warned from other reviews about how the handle feels to fragile for the pitcher and how the filter has to be changed 'too often'.

Well, I've used it for awhile now and I disagree with those reviews. The first time I used it, I noticed a very slight change in the flavor of the water (from none to just a hint of chlorine) when the indicator went from green to yellow. I was ready to switch filters not long before it started flashing red. So for those people who reset the LED light, you either aren't supertasters or you have incredibly tasty tap-water to begin with. As for the handle, I can honestly say I am very hard on anything I own and I never remember to grip the body of the pitcher when I pull it from the fridge. I am much more likely to accidentally slam the pitcher into the fridge door or a counter while holding it by just the 'fragile' handle than I am to baby it. And if I haven't broken it after months of use, it must be pretty study stuff. So I guess the handle feels more fragile than it is.

Yes, the pitcher is small and takes a little time to filter. I am considering buying a second pitcher so I have one for cold water and one for the counter (for making things like coffee and for cooking). If the pitcher were bigger, though, it wouldn't fit in my fridge so well, so I can honestly say I'm happy with the smaller size.

Customer Review: Pur Pitcher with LED- A perfect water filter pitcher!
Summary: 5 Stars

I purchased this water filter pitcher to replace a Brita Pitcher after I learned that Brita filters don't filter out any microbes or pharmaceuticals, but only chlorine, etc. The design is great. Unlike my previous Brita filterBRITA Water Filtration System Kit 1 Pitcher Vintage Model (Large Capacity) plus 2 Fliters this one consists of three easy to clean parts, the pitcher, the basin, and the lid. When you pour from the pitcher, the LED flashes, indicating the status of the filter. It's not measuring anything when you pour, pouring simply activates the LED and tells you how much time has passed since you set the timer, indicating its state as working or not. Though it may filter a tad slower than the Brita filter, the time difference is not significant, and the fact that it removes 96% of pharmaceuticals, and microbial cysts makes it well worth it. If you enjoy the convenience of having an LED to remind you when it's time to change filters, I would definitely recommend this model. If you don't mind using the stickers that come with the filters to remind you when to change, or have enough confidence in your memory to do without either, I would recommend saving the money and buying one of these models: PUR CR-6000 2 Stage Oval Water Pitcher or PUR Water Pitcher with Bonus Trial-Size Samples

Customer Review: Good-tasting water, a little tricky to refill
Summary: 4 Stars

I've had this pitcher for a few months now. We have okay tap water here, but water from the Pur pitcher tastes better, and I also like very much that I'm not wasting plastic bottles. I've tried a Brita dispenser before, as well as a Pur faucet-mounted filter, and I prefer this pitcher. The Pur water tastes better to me than the Brita water, and the faucet-mounted filter was always in the way.

I agree with others that the pitcher is difficult to fill and isn't the best design, but I tend to work at things until I find a trick to it. Here's how I fill mine (I'm right-handed):

1. I place my left hand on top of the pitcher, fingers toward the handle.
2. I place my left index finger on one side of the tail of the lid and my left thumb on the other side.
3. I pinch my finger and thumb together on the tail of the lid and raise it a bit.
4. Then, holding the handle with my right hand as if pouring, I press the pad of my right thumb firmly against the raised edge of the tail. I continue pressing forward and up with my thumb, and the lid comes off.

Obviously, it's also tricky to describe in words, but once you do it, you'll get it. Hope it works for you.

Overall, I'm happy with the pitcher. I've thought about getting the dispenser with the spigot, but the pitcher is easy to take in and out of the fridge. The lifespan of the filters seems short (or the indicator is dishonest), but it hasn't been much of a problem.

Customer Review: Great taste, more filling.
Summary: 5 Stars

The 2-stage filter produces water that tastes so good, I've stopped drinking bottled water (at home, anyway). As a result I find myself filling the pitcher several times a day, much more often than I filled my Brita pitcher.

The functional design of the pitcher, however, could easily be better. Its pour spout is open to the air, while Brita's is covered, leaving the water exposed to dust, as well as to odors in the fridge. It's the equivalent of leaving a bottle of water uncapped all day or longer.

In addition, removing the top in order to add water requires more effort than it should; whoever designed it doesn't seem to have considered that the top must be separated from the filtration chamber. (For that purpose I've developed a technique where I pull the chamber up with my left hand while my right thumb releases the top from it.)

The LED light on top of the lid is activated by pouring, simply by the tilt of the pitcher. It's supposed to measure the amount of water you pour so you know when to get a new filter. If you pour one glass at a time, this will probably give you an accurate measurement. However, if you pour fractions of a glass, or potfulls, or if you tilt the lid when you remove it, it becomes a not very useful gimmick.

Despite the issues with the pitcher, which I hope someone at PUR takes seriously, the quality of the water makes this a product I'd recommend.

Customer Review: Does what it should
Summary: 4 Stars

After reading everyone's reviews, I feel like we all can't be talking about this same pitcher. I've had this pitcher for around a year. The water tastes great. Perfect. The plastic has never cracked on me, and I've left it out of the refridgerator multiple times to clean it and such with no problem. Some people were saying it takes 20-30 minutes for the water to filter through. That's crazy! It takes maybe 5 minutes tops. The LED indicator is never going to be 100% accurate because everyone uses a different amount of water. You think people would understand this. That's how it is for any water pitcher. It's more of a guide really to how old it is. How hard is it to notice that your water is tasting a little worse, along with the LED ligth being red, and change the filter. With two adults in my household that both use it, I find one filter is good for around another month to month-and-a-half after the LED turns red, which is a lot of life for one filter. I never found the lid impossible or even difficult to get off. I've never cut my finger or anything like some other people have been saying in the reviews. You do kind of have to get a little nail underneath it to pop it off, but before I read these reviews, I didn't even think of the lid as a problem. It's definately not a deal breaker. I'm sure there's better water filtration pitchers out there, but I know there's probably more that are much worse. I would reccomend it.
