Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of PUR 18 Cup Dispenser with One Pitcher Filter DS-1800ZCustomer Review: Good compromise Summary: 5 Stars
This dispenser gets a LOT of use. It would be nice if we didn't need to fill it so often (usually daily), but a larger dispenser would be unwieldy and take up too much counter space, let alone refrigerator space.
Every faucet-mounted filter we've tried ends up not fitting quite right, or getting bumped once too often, and springing a leak in its brittle plastic parts. So although the dispenser is slower, it has been more durable.
The water in our area passes all contaminant tests with flying colors each year (if you live in town, check with your city government to see if water test results are available--they should be), so the possible health issues of inadequate filtration don't apply here, but the taste bothers me, so the dispenser solves that problem neatly. Tea and coffee made with dispenser water also taste better. We aren't rigorous about replacing the filter every 40 gallons, or every 3 months, but the filter still makes a difference in the taste some time after its useful life should be over. This is nice because, like with printers and ink refills, you'll spend a lot more on filter replacements than you will on the dispenser itself.
My only real complaint about the dispenser is that it takes 2-stage filters, not 3-stage, and it's getting harder all the time to find 2-stage filters on store shelves. Not a huge deal but inconvenient.
Customer Review: Excellent Summary: 5 Stars
Our water comes from a well. It's good water - no bacteria - but, coming from the earth, while being reasonably clean, it's not exactly 'pure'. We have a filter in the basement but, since it's our kids who drink it, we used to have a faucet filter as well. Some 6 months ago we decided that the faucet filters were more trouble than their worth so we switched to this unit.
WE WILL NEVER GO BACK :)
To summarize the good things about this implement:
- It holds A LOT of water. Not so sure how much but it should be more than 2 gallons on a full charge.
- It looks cool. It really does. It's designed and colored to convey 'freshness' and 'coolness'.
- Unlike what other reviewers experienced, I NEVER sensed anything 'chemical' about the water's smell of taste. It is possible that it depends of the quality of the water you pour in.
- The filters are NOT expensive. We are at the second filter after almost 6 months of use and you can get a filter for about $6 if you buy a three-pack.
- It lets your faucet operate the way it's supposed to. No faucet disfigurement or constraints from a faucet-attached filter.
I can't think of any major 'minuses'. If you hate faucet-attached filters but you'd still like extra clean-fresh water for drinking or cooking or tea and coffee brewing, this is what you need.
Customer Review: Works well, but a couple design flaws that could affect you Summary: 4 Stars
First off, the filter seems to work well and do what it should. Our tap water is a bit metallic tasting. After passing it thru this system it comes out tasting clean and fresh. The unit fits nicely on a refrigerator shelf, and comes out nice and cold.
There are a couple design issues to be aware of which may be an issue for you (they are for us):
1. The dispenser handle is designed to pull out to let water flow. However when you push it in it also drips a little. The problem is that if your refrigerator has door shelves (like for jars et al), it can push on the handle and overnight the whole container will drain out (filling veggie drawers and pouring out onto the floor when you open it). You just have to remember to turn the dispenser to the side and so the handle doesn't make contact and its not a problem. But its easy to forget and visitors don't know. It probably depends on whether your shelf depth happens to match the dispenser depth -- ours does (sub zero type).
2. We drink a lot of water, and I wind up having to fill this up pretty often, which is a bit of a pain. Also, the water takes a while to chill. That's fine overnight, but if you have to fill it mid day you'll have tap water temperature water. I'll probably either buy a 2nd one, or get an under sink type and just fill up several pitchers.
Customer Review: slim profile arrived cracked ($30.99) Summary: 3 Stars
Retraction: I tested with a second filter and they both did hte same thing. The problem is that the filters are much more short lived than advertised. The filters work great for two weeks, less so for two weeks and then don't work at all.
I own three dispensers because I realize they are the perfect set up for cold tea. I was making canning jars of sweet tea for my family and it was exhausting to sterilize the jars and fill them. I would definitely use this dispenser for fresh juices for young children or for parties. It is a tidier option than pitchers and punch bowls.
The design is user friendly. The "handles" on the end make it easy to carry this off the refrigerator shelf to fill under the faucet.
This has a narrower footprint than expected and appears less bulky than a regular gallon jug. Amazon is sending a replacement because the first delivery arrived cracked in several places. I researched Pur and found it to be superior to Brita.
On September 3rd, I received the replacement. It's perfect. I'd wish it were bigger but I don't have enough room in the fridge for a bigger one.
September 28th, I am so pleased to own this but it takes forever for the water to filter so I need to fill up the top part daily so that enough dribbles through the filter.
Customer Review: Chlorine is IN, Aluminum is IN... Summary: 1 Stars
what the point of using this filter or brita filter...if they DO NOT remove CHLORINE, DO NOT remove ALUMINUM?????
Both filters only REDUCE TASTE of chlorine. And Aluminum they don't even touch, because FLUORIDE is "beneficial"..!!??
"BENEFICIAL" for WHAT????...for developing ALZHEIMERS ???
It has been proven for long time that FLUORIDE/ALUMINUM causes Alzheimers, and both companies insist on feeding our brains with aluminum ????
I suggest, start looking into the best water purifiers, like REVERSE-OSMOSIS, or OZONIZATION.
Now, ozonization is the absolutely BEST.
SPRING WATER from known sources NO DOUBT better than both brita and pur, as ANY spring water will never have any CHLORINE and NO FLUORIDE, because SPRING WATER is from underground sources.
Another option is DISTILLED WATER, which is also purified tap water: it's has NOTHING, that's what water is supposed to be.
Distilled water can also be bought in bottles, or made your own. Just search here on amazon...
so, to sum up:
1.OZONIZATION....produces purest water...BEST CHOICE!
2.SpringWater Ozonated....filtered, no chlorine, no aluminum...mostly in plastic bottles......OK!
3.Distilled Water.....purest water, nothing in it.....OK!
4.Reverse Osmosis Filter......quite expensive, but does the job.
