Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of PUR 18 Cup Dispenser with One Pitcher Filter DS-1800Z

Customer Review: Better than Brita
Summary: 5 Stars

I have used this dispenser daily for two months now and my family loves it. We have it sitting at the far end of kitchen counter, elevated 9" on a bamboo-wood shelf of the kind sold as kitchen cabinet organizers. The elevation gives room under the spigot to fill water bottles, tea kettles, etc.

I used to use a Brita pitcher and was constantly seeing charcoal filter bits in the water. No so with this Pur. I also found the filter unit in the Pur attaches more securely than the Brita, so there is never water leaking around the filter and bypassing it. The water taste is great with both Pur and Brita, but I like that the Pur 2 stage filter is certified to reduce more categories of contaminants than the Brita. Both filter brands reduce chlorine and heavy metals, but Pur's list also includes microbial cysts, agricultural and industrial pollutants.

The spring-loaded spigot has worked well for the two months we have used it in an adult household. The filtering time gets dramatically slower as the filter gets older. With a brand new filter, the top reservoir completely filtered into the bottom in 20 minutes. As other reviewers have noted, the top reservoir, when completely filled, will filter through to fill about two-thirds of the bottom storage area. Refilling the dispenser by carrying it to the sink is facilitated by the built-in hand-holds. There is a low-tech plastic clingy sticker to attach to the dispenser to remind you time-wise when the filter is due for a change. If you use the dispenser voluminously, the slow filtration rate will make you aware that you need to change the filter sooner than the 2-month interval on the sticker.

Customer Review: No More "Pool" Water!
Summary: 5 Stars

I was so sad to realize when we moved recently that, while we have an awesome pull-out sprayer faucet (yay!) in our new apartment, it's simply not conducive to a faucet mount filter. Boo! Then I tried to buy a Brita to keep on the counter (we like room temp water) in this style and the price was ridiculous!

Then I found this! The price blew Brita out of the water, and it was Prime eligible! I think it's perfect--a small but will-change-your-life (no, really!) feature is that when you use the dispenser and flip it back up NOT A DROP leaks out! Not a drop! There is nothing worse than having to stand there and wait for those few drops, or other people in your family who don't wait and then there are constant drips on the floor!

Still, the water tastes amazing. I love having the little sticker to remind me when to change the filter, and despite tons of use a filter easily lasts us a full 30 days. If you do the PUR CRF-950Z 2-Stage Water Pitcher Replacement Filter, 3-Pack when it's $16 (watch the prices for when they dip!) then it's a great deal! My husband and I use this all day every day and I love the way the water tastes amazing.

My ONLY complaint is that since you need to keep the upper basin over the filter, so it doesn't dry out, then we have to refill it basically every time we use it. That can get old really fast! But it's worth it, since this water is wonderful. I never thought I'd switch away from Brita, but

Customer Review: Made a big difference with my water.
Summary: 4 Stars

This is my first PUR product and it's been a good first impression so far. I've been using Brita faucet filters for some time until I moved to my new apartment which has some faucet issues. Along with the faucet issues, the water is even worse than in the area that I previously lived in. Bad taste, occasionally cloudy, and bad smell. I was getting tired of constantly purchasing bottled water as well. After reading a few reviews here on Amazon and some additional research, I settled on getting the PUR Dispenser over the Brita. After one month of use so far I am quite satisfied with my decision (I bought one as a gift for my mother). I didn't purchase it on Amazon, though Amazon led me to Target, where I picked it up locally (on sale!).

The filter works reasonably fast, I would say it fills the bottom half of the dispenser in about an hour. Note that the PUR filters are 2-Stage versus the single stage filters from Brita. The filtered water is crystal clear, has NO smell, and tastes like water should taste. I find that there are no leaks from the spout, the parts fit precisely and the size is more than manageable.

The reason I gave it 4 stars out of 5 is due to design. The bottom reservoir is designed to be completely level, therefore you will have some water sitting at the very bottom of the reservoir that can't be 'dispensed' without tilting the unit. This so far hasn't become an issue (no slime/mildew).

I highly recommend this product. The quality of the filtered water itself deserves 5 stars.

Customer Review: Beats Brita pitchers hands-down, not even close
Summary: 5 Stars

Our family had been long-time users of a Brita pitcher and basically I thought we were happy and satisfied with it. That is, until our kids got older and wanted water all the time and we needed greater capacity plus easier self service. So instead of Brita, I heard a lot about PUR and thought we'd try this instead. Now I wish I had found and switched to this so much earlier, instead of Brita all this time! It really is that much better.

The water is the cleanest and purest we've ever tasted - and you can't stop drinking it. Plus because of the size it's most always full, provided you fill the top part a couple times a day. Yet it's slim and looks good on the counter, and easy for the kids to use on their own.

The fact that it now runs laps around Brita in terms of filtering out so many more things, makes it all the better. I hadn't realized how much Brita had fallen behind, until reading the specs here. Again, I wish I'd found it years ago when the kids were babies.

The filtering is slower than Brita (which makes sense, since more things are taken out), but you don't notice it because you're just not running out of water easily with the large available reservoir. We're going over 2 months now on the original filter that came with it, and the water still tastes good.

Since we can't have a sink-mounted filter on our particular sink, this is absolutely the best choice - and I wish we'd been drinking the excellent water from this product all these years instead.

Customer Review: Why pay $7 dollars a bottle from the "Big Boys" ?
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a great product because of the amount of water it holds, its dispensing ability and build. It is slim, maybe 2 - 4 inches in length and takes up minimal space. I think it is more ideal for Side by Side refrigerators (which I have) but I am sure it would work well in a traditional style fridge. I have had this for four months now and it still is in "new" condition. I am a former Marine and I drink water constantly and I have had no leaky gaskets and no structural issues with it. You can fill up the top chamber (blue) and let it filter down to the second chamber (clear). Once this is complete, (10 - 15MIN) you can refill the blue chamber and have it fully loaded. My family probablly fills it 3 times a week. To fill it, I take it out of the fridge, put it in the sink and fill it up; it takes about 30 seconds. I had a salesman over here recently and offered him some water, he did one of those, take a sip, look at the cup gestures saying, "Man what kind of water is this?" I had to show him the PUR system, he was like can I have some more, i said sure just peel that grey lever towards you.

Something I just learned: Filling water bottles! I always hovered the water bottle below the dispener. Apparently the genius who designed this thing made it water bottle friendly and you can put the opening right up to it because there is a clear narrow thingy-ma-jig (that is the correct spelling) that you can "connect" to, and it wont make it unsanitary for other users.
