Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of PUR 18 Cup Dispenser with One Pitcher Filter DS-1800ZCustomer Review: Brita is better but it is also not better. Summary: 4 Stars
So I had gotten this and the equivalent Brita one for my workplace as a Christmas gift. They each had different pros and cons.
Pro:
1) Consumer reports said this filtered slightly better than Brita, but only marginally so. This also means it clogs marginally faster too. However the real benefit is you do not see the charcoal backwash you generally see with the Brita. Again this makes no effect difference but is more aesthetically pleasing.
2) The dispenser can be almost completely drained from the spigot while on a flat surface. This is again more of an aesthetics issue, but it makes me happy.
Cons:
1) As of this date I cannot find a program to get the filters recycled. Brita has one, but PUR does not
2) Unit is too tall. This makes it harder to fit on a fridge shelf or gives you less options on which shelf to put it on. Unfortunately this is because its filters are taller which also what makes them filter slightly beter (2stage)
3) Water filters slowly. Much slower than with Brita.
3) No access point means the whole top has to be removed in order to fill. Brita has a small access point that can be removed which is nice since the whole tops are so large.
Overall the filter recycling really tips it in Britas favor. Most of the differences are aesthetic and have ups and downs. The lack of filter recycling really kills Pur on this. Although my perfect filter would be a combo of the two. Theoretically that would be a filter unit that would fit easily in the fridge, be easy to access for refills, would filter the water fast, would completely drain on a level surface, and have some small spongey material or something to keep the carbon backwash problem from arising. Oh well, for now go with the Brita as it is also cheaper.
Customer Review: Really improves my water consumption Summary: 3 Stars
I have several PUR pitchers -- one for my pets' water bowls, one for the refrigerator, and one for my bedroom/bathroom area. I wanted this dispenser for a long time and was waiting for a gold box deal which finally came around.
Due to the easy dispensing from the frig shelf, I tend to open the frig, dispense a glass, and drink more water than when I had to remove the pitcher from the shelf and pour, replace to shelf, etc. Am I lazy? No, just very busy balancing work, family, pets, hobbies, etc., etc. I, like most of us, need convenience. This dispenser is an improvement on my previous system for accessing refreshing, great tasting water. So, so much better than bottled water options. How convenient is it to buy and store bottled water and dispose of the plastic bottles -- how wasteful is that system -- how trustworthy is bottled water -- and how horribly expensive is it?
My biggest dissatisfaction with the PUR 2 Stage Water System is the filter itself. How inconvenient is it to use those dumb little calendar type stickers to be reminded as to when to insert a new filter???? Pretty darn useless! I much prefer the little indicator that is on the filter itself like on the old system. It gradually moves down as the filter-life is used up. Better yet, can't PUR come up with a system that beeps or otherwise gets my attention and won't leave me alone until I change the filter?
Listen up PUR -- time for a better mousetrap, so to speak! We're a busy people working hard to keep our lives in balance and healthy in a sped up, downwardly spiraling economy. We're not placing hi-priority on looking at that stupid little stick-on calendar to know when to use more of your product, i.e., change the filter.
Customer Review: YOU MUST GET THIS!!! Summary: 5 Stars
I cannot recommend this filter enough! Where I live, the tap stinks of chlorine and literally tastes bitter, and when I drink it, even after boiling it, I get stomach pains. Suffice it to say, I haven't tried drinking raw tap water. I needed a good filter, and because the filters that hook up to the faucet are notoriously slow to let down water (and yes, I'm impatient), I needed something better. This was the right choice for several reasons:
1.) It is the most complete commercially available filter you can get in terms of what it filters out (mercury, bacterial cysts, all sorts of industrial/chemical/farm compounds, lead, chlorine, and a lot more).
2.) A new filter will realatively quickly filter the water. The best part about it is, I can fill it up with 3 liters of water to filter out, and it will do so in about 10-15 minutes. Then, I'll have 3 liters of filtered water that can be quickly released from the bottom compartment (solving my impatience issue). As long as I remember to fill up the upper portion so the filter has something to do and I have clean water.
3.) The taste of water form this thing, I kid you not, is incredible! The only water I have tasted to be as good as this was the very expensive Fiji bottled water or water I drank from a pristine underground aquifer in Russia. It is, without a doubt, sweet in taste. Not sugary sweet, just pleasantly clean sweet.
This will be a wise investment for any home. The filter lasts about 2 months for one person drinking about 4 liters per day (which is my average).
The only downside is, this thing doesn't filter Arsenic...which unfortunately is found in public water to this day.
Customer Review: PUR DS-1800Z - 2 STAGE FILTER WATER DISPENSER Summary: 5 Stars
After 2 years of use this is my review - This is a great product. I never liked drinking tap water because of a slight after taste. I live in Manhattan, NY and we are supposed to have some of the best tasting water in the country. I would confirm this to be true because I have been to other cities in this country and it does have less of an after taste. Pure water is supposed to be tasteless! This product comes as close to this as far as I can taste. Bottled water usually picks up a taste from the plastic container it is stored in. The bottles are cheap and made of substances which, when exposed to heat, has a negative chemical affect on the health quality of the water. This product is NSF approved. This means that the plastic the container is made of does not have substances that react with water. This product has turned my whole family into water drinkers. We stopped drinking soda and artificial fruit drinks and drink only water filtered by this device from PUR !!!
The design is slim and tall so that it does not take up a lot of room in your side by side refrigerator. It is expensive to run but worth it. Each filter is supposed to purify about 40 gallons of water. You can tell when the filter needs to be replaced when it takes more than 2 hours for the water in the top tank to empty into the lower tank or you notice a taste difference in the water. How long your filter lasts depends on just how dirty your water is. Water with more particles will cause the filter to clog faster. My NYC tap water allows from 35 to 40 refills of the top tank before it needs replacement. This product saves money and is ecology friendly to the environment. This is a good product and well worth the money.
Customer Review: Love It! Love It! Love It! Summary: 5 Stars
Wow, this is a great product! I read an article about how PUR produced cleaner water than Brita, but I was initially concerned about purchasing this dispenser. I usually use Amazon reviews for determining whether to purchase a product, and sometimes I think people try to complain about things that just aren't worth complaining about. It made me nervous about purchasing this product.
However, everything was too my expectations or better:
(1) Water Flow: Yes, it may not come down as fast as just turning on your sink faucet, but I usually fill the tank up in the sink, let it sit there for about 5 minutes, come back to refill it a second time, let it sit for another 5 minutes, and I have a gallon of water to drink. It's not as scary as some people make it out to be. And this is the PUREST tasting water, I've had! Much better than Aquafina.
(2) Tank design: You have to have a REALLY small fridge for this not to fit. I live in an apartment, where they don't necessarily try to spend money on high-end fridges. This dispenser fits perfectly in it, and easily slides out to pour water. No problem at all with this.
(3) Weight/Capacity: The weight of the dispenser is surprisingly not heavy at all. It is pretty easy to fill the tank and just place it back in the fridge without straining. This may just be personal though, since I am a male in my 20s. However, the capacity has been great as well. I get about a gallon of water out of my tank each time.
Overall, this is a great product with the purest tasting water I've ever had. I would definitely choose it again. It's amazing how much money you save in water bottles!
