Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Oster BPST02-B Professional Series Blender, BlackCustomer Review: Wonderful for smoothies and raw foods diets Summary: 5 Stars
Thank you Oster for saving me $300.
My wife recently went on a raw foods diet and insisted that she needed a $350-$550 Vitamix or Blendtec blender because that's what all the raw food sites recommended. My thought was that raw foods were all fairly soft anyway, so what's the need for something that can blend concrete? I talked her into this Oster blender with the promise that if it broke I would get her the Vitamix. Since the Oster comes with a 3-year warranty I think I can save the expense for a while. :)
So far the Oster has been fantastic. We've had it for about a month now and it gets used every day for raw foods smoothies and other foods. It's a very solidly built blender and feels very high quality. As other reviews say, it is LOUD, but the expensive ones are too. Cleanup is also very easy using the recommended method of simply blending some hot water with a bit of soap.
Customer Review: I'd give it 6 stars if I could! Summary: 5 Stars
I got this blender 2 months ago and, in a word, I adore it! I have gone through many blenders in my time, most recently an expensive KitchenAid that--to put it mildly--sucked (left big chunks of ice and banana when I tried to make smoothies). Well, this Oster is the cat's meow! I have been using it practically every day to make breakfast smoothies and frozen bar drinks. I don't at all mind the noise that some reviewers have complained about because it is so fast and produces such a smooth result that the noise is of no consequence. In fact, it does such a good job pureeing fruit, that I throw in peaches and nectarines with the skin and thereby get the full benefit of the fiber. I even finally crushed plain ice cubes in it the other day, and after only a few seconds, I had perfect snow! This has now replaced by Cuisinart as my favorite appliance. I can't wait to puree soups in it come winter time!
Customer Review: Good blender but problems replacing jar Summary: 3 Stars
I have liked this blender a lot and the engine is powerful (though very loud!). The only problem is that after having had it just a year, we've cracked the jar and I can't seem to find any information (either on amazon or on Oster's site about whether this particular model has a replacement jar - or if any Oster jars would work with this blender - though that seems unlikely since there are differently shaped Oster jars that seem compatible with specific models). It is frustrating not to be able to replace this simple part that now makes it impossible to use.
update: when I called Oster's customer service, I was informed that replacement jars are currently unavailable and was told to keep calling back to find out if they have become available yet. I was told it could be days, weeks, or months - there was no telling. A pretty unsatisfactory and unhelpful response, as far as I am concerned.
Customer Review: unsurpassed for slurry ice drinks Summary: 5 Stars
Before this we got a simple Beehive from Walmart with a two position rotary switch. Reviewers had whined about the noise, but it did good work. It would develop bubbles at the blades (sound and fury, doing not much) so it required a lot of tending. Unfortunately a spoon left in it caused the motor shaft to break where it's designed to protect idiots from themselves. The model was discontinued everywhere. I settled for one of those programmed Oster blenders from Walmart that falsely advertised 600 watts. Much quieter. If you let it run long enough it does a pretty good job of grinding up the ice. By then it has also melted the ice a lot.
This one is louder than the Beehive described at the top of this review. It grinds the ice so good. It doesn't develop bubbles at the blades. It doesn't bob the slurry up and down. It gets the job done fast. It doesn't melt the ice.
Customer Review: Not good for frozen fruit - smoothie makers beware! Summary: 2 Stars
I bought this blender because of all the rave reviews it received in using it to make smoothies. Please note that if you plan on blending FROZEN chunks of anything, it has a hard time pulling chunks to the blades. I use it primarily for fruit smoothies with small frozen fruit chunks and everytime I make one I have to stop the blender several times to manually push the chunks down toward the blades. It spins incredibly fast, creating a pocket of air right above the blades, which is probably why the frozen chunks don't get pulled down to the bottom. Not sure if the taller skinnier jar design has anything to do with that, either. Once everything reaches the blades, it does completely pulverize solids, but it takes several manual attempts to get the food to reach the blades.
Also, WOW, this is one loud blender! You almost need ear protection to use it! Best of luck!
