Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Oster BPST02-B Professional Series Blender, BlackCustomer Review: tornado mixing great smoothies Summary: 5 Stars
To clean I filled 3/4 full of water and it makes an incredable tournado it definitely mixes completely and self cleans. This tornado is very impressive to see and we were both amazed when we did this after we first got it.
I had a head start on making smoothies as I watched a demo of the vitamix at the fair so combining his method with the Oster recipee book heres my recipee: I put 1 cup vanilla yogurt 1 cup apple/cheery juice, 1/4 cantaloupe with rind removed but with seeds (good antoxidents), 1 peeled orange and about 6 frozen strawberries. Turn mixer on then drop ice 1 at a time thru top hole untill it thickens. The tornado doesnt stop unless I add too much ice usually about 10 ice cubes so it mixes and grinds well.
This is the way the vitamix demonstrater did it at the fair and thats a 400.00 dollar machine he even put a stir stick thru the top hole and I don't. It is always completely ground no seed or ice remnants. I never leave on just go as fast as I can and its done. I think those that say it doesnt grind ice don't know the proper way to mix. Liquids are still used to move ice and fruit around in even the most expensive units so add liquids & fruit- mix first- then with mixer on add ice thru top hole in lid.
Its flaws really aren',t that big a deal its loud but its not like I use it all day, in fact, I doubt its running more then a minute. The soft rubberry lid goes on easily and I don't see how it can be hard to put on but sometimes it leaks so I usually hold it down when I turn it on. and thats about it...not bad for a machine costing an 1/8 of the machine we saw. I will try to make a video to demonstrate because we almost waited to get the more expensive machine and would have liked to see this one in action.
Customer Review: Pulverized.... Summary: 5 Stars
I do not normally write reviews, but I do use them for every Amazon purchase I make. I was going to purchase the Montel Williams blender we all see advertised on TV because I wanted to start making fruit and vegetable shakes. This was my main reason. I have never purchased such a high quality blender in my life! From the glass container, to the good quality metal build to the rubber feet that stop the blender from moving around the counter top, even the blade it comes with. This product is about a good a deal as you can get for the price.
To the few people who have reviewed this product stating that it will not make vegetable shakes very well, I have made one every day for the last 2 months I have owned this blender. I put cucumber, carrots, spinach, red pepper and an apple in with a few cups of water and about 6 ice cubes and this thing works like a champ! I am expecting these people were too stupid to add water and ice cubes, put dry vegetables and fruit in and turned it on! This is the only explanation I can come up with. If you do that of COURSE its not going to blend everything. Someone else wrote that they believe if they put concrete in this blender it would pulverize it. I am beginning to believe it myself!! Trust me when I say this, you will not have a problem blending anything as long as you add a few ice cubes and a little water or milk (depending on what you are making). Buy this blender, you will not regret it.
The only con I can think of is the noise. I was too close to it one day and it is so loud my ears were ringing afterwards. But if you want this much power and speed there is no way around it, so I don't really consider it a con.
Customer Review: It's no VitaMix, but good for the money... Summary: 4 Stars
Yep, I'm a little spoiled having gotten used to the commercial-grade Vitamix blender (four hundred fifty bucks, yikes) I was using at the meditation center where I recently stayed for several months.
This Oster costs 1/9th of that (fifty bucks at my local Sams), and has only 1/2 horsepower as compared to 2 horsepower---which mainly shows up when I try to make smoothies using frozen bananas cut in half. It's fine with soft bananas combined with ice cubes, but with the frozen bananas I have to be very gentle and patient with it because I don't wish to burn out the engine. Have had it for about 3 months now, I'd like it to last at least 2 years as all my other hundred-bucks-and-under blenders have, I make a smoothie for breakfast almost every day so lots of use.
It's a bit of a stretch for Oster to call this blender "Professional Series" but overall I love the look and functionality of this little baby. The black base is sleek and fingerprint-free, the glass pitcher is nice and thick and easy to clean, the single speed switch is so much easier to use than the multi-speed buttons on KitchenAid and Cuisinart blenders I've used in the past, and the all-metal drive mechanism is a huge improvement over the plastic/rubber parts the otherwise nice K.A. blender had (I forget what the Cuisinart had). Cleaning is also a snap, though it does take a little getting used to the way in which the rubber washer and the blade fit into the pitcher...seems a little counterintuitive but that's a minor quibble.
Now if Oster would come out with a full one HP blender based on this design, I'd happily pay twice as much for twice the power! Oster, are you listening?
Customer Review: Better than KitchenAid Summary: 5 Stars
I had a KitchenAid blender for many years. It almost always left chunks of frozen fruit in my smoothies. This one doesn't do that. As other reviewers mention, it is loud! I have decided I can deal with that because it doesn't take very long to create a lump-free smoothie that goes easily through a drinking straw. I start the blending process on the lower "pulse" speed to minimize the contents flying all over the interior, and after a second or two I turn it up to the other speed for 10-15 seconds -- I might stand back or cover my ears --and breakfast is ready.
Another thing I like about this blender in comparison with the KitchenAid -- the accessories. I sometimes use the Blend-N-go Cup Oster 6848-000-950 Blend-N-Go Cup -- mainly if I forgot to wash the travel mug I usually use. I also suspect that replacement parts are going to be cheaper and easier to find than for KitchenAid.
Here's my smoothie recipe, in the order I add the ingredients:
4 to 6 frozen strawberries
1/2 cup frozen blueberries
(optional) a little hot water to start the thawing process and slightly warm the smoothie
2 heaping tablespoons Jarrow Formulas Fermented Soy Essence
(optional) powdered greens or vitamins
3 tablespoons ground flax seed (use 2 if you want a less thick drink)
approx. 3/4 cup juice -- my favorite is L&A Pineapple Coconut.
If I have it, some chunks of fresh pineapple are wonderful, or you might use a piece of banana to add sweetness. Thanks to the soy powder, this sees me through to lunch.
Customer Review: Efficient, Powerful and yes... Very Loud! Summary: 4 Stars
Had this unit for approximately three months now. It is frequently used to blend soups and make smoothies. It performs admirably at that.
The base construction seems very solid -- no visible plastic parts.
The top rubber cover seems a bit flimsy, but it seals the container well. No problems so far. Bottom sealing is also good, no leaks.
As others mentioned, it is very loud. The first time I used it my ears went *click*... :) But given the price and performance, I can live with that.
The blender is "assembled in Mexico". If you're looking for something made in USA, Canada or Europe, look elsewhere.
I did quite a bit of research before settling on this particular model. My previous Braun blender -- Braun MX2050 PowerMax 525-Watt 58-Ounce Jug Blender -- was a piece of plastic, leaky garbage. Bought it based on recommendation by Consumer Reports, to which I no longer subscribe.
I also considered getting a VitaMix, but wanted a glass jar instead of polycarbonate due to health concerns. There is also a healthy price premium for (supposedly) the top brand in blenders. Customer reviews weren't particularly rave when it came to product support by Vitamix, so I decided to save some cash and get an Oster instead.
Overall, I'm happy with my purchase. It is a great deal for a powerful, solidly built blender that produces great results. The only drawback is loud operation. 4/5 stars.
