Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Oster 6293 6-Slice Convection Toaster Oven, BlackCustomer Review: Learning to use a good value toaster oven Summary: 4 Stars
After reading mixed reviews on this product, I still decided to give it shot. There are several reasons for the decision. The main one is its value. I just can not find anything that gives me similar functionalities, cooking volume, appearance, and price. I also believe that certain complaints are attributed to user's problem. It is like everyone can turn on a stove, but a good cook will prepare a good meal with it, but a not so good cook will be just burning food.
I burned my first bagel toast. But that was just a learning curve to figure out the right time setting for the toast function. After that, there was no more burning for me. I only have had it for a few days and have not put it to more extensive task than toasting. But I believe as long as it's behavior is consistent and predictable, meaning with the same setting I can expect the same result every time, it will be just a matter of learning to use it.
Without seeing its long term performance, with the amount of money I paid, and with how much I get from this toast oven, I give it 4 Stars for now. I will happily give it an extra star if it can hold off over a year without part failure.
Customer Review: Love this toaster oven Summary: 5 Stars
This is a great toaster oven. I did a lot of research thanks to all of you other reviewers, and even though I'm sure there are other ones that are just as good if not better, I just want to let you all know that I have not had any problems and enjoy the finished product. I knew ahead of time what to expect too, that always helps. Yes, the outside gets very hot when it's baking, just make sure there is nothing too close to it. It does make a ticking noise that you can hear, but it's not obnoxious. Very easy to use, and bakes everything evenly. I dropped a couple of french fries below, frustrated at first, but realized that the tray below slides out and Voila! there was my french fries.
I recommend when you get the tray to keep non stick foil on it. I did not do this, and it has since darkened a bit. (though not a big deal.)
Also, the glass has some sort of film on it that I cannot get off with regular glass cleaner. I'm sure there is something out there that can get it off, but for now, it is staying on there for me. I'm sure this goes for any toaster oven glass, (but not 100% sure!)
Overall, I'm very satisfied with this oven, and recommend it.
Customer Review: Does the job, but not well Summary: 2 Stars
Honestly, this isn't a bad toaster. It's just not a good one, either. My biggest complaint is that toast put on the bottom rack burns on the bottom before the top side even gets warm. The rack is just too close to the heater. My second complaint is that the timer (although a nice feature), makes a loud ticking sound that can be heard several rooms away. When I put in a waffle in the morning, the ticking sounds make me feel like I'm in a race to get ready for the day. Finally, the dial system that the toaster has is not too intuitive. On several occassions, I've set the dial to "toast", and turned on the timer, only to come back when it's done to fine the bread still untoasted because I forgot to set the temperature dial. It shouldn't take three dials to make toast.Once you get used to the idea of not using the bottom rack for toast, the crazy dials, and the loud timer, the toaster isn't that bad. There's still enough room for four bread slices on the top rack, and if you use the tray as a buffer, the bottom rack works fine for pizza or other foods. But I'm sure there are better toaster ovens out there for the price.
Customer Review: don't expect to make toast with this toaster Summary: 2 Stars
We're bringing this one back to target today. It looks stylish and the pictures on the box show it cooking up racks of lamb and salmon steaks. But hey I just want it to make a decent slice of toast! Which it doesn't. The outside housing gets very hot on all sides. There are other toaster ovens out there that do not. The timer is junk. The first setting on this wind up timer is 10 minutes? with 4 miniscule hash marks between the 10 min mark and off. It has 2 racks inside, one very close to the top burner and one all the way down at the bottom. If you use either one you'll end up with lopsided toast. I was constantly having to open it up and flip my toast over so it would toast on the other side. My wife burner her hand trying to flip a waffle. You also have to keep an eye on it because if you set it to 10 min you've got burnt toast, and if you try and set it to one of the other 4 hash marks you never know what you'll get. Don't buy this unless you're looking for something to make racks of lamb and salmon steaks.
Customer Review: convenient, well-designed appliance Summary: 5 Stars
My ten year old Black & Decker toaster oven finally stopped making toast, and I realized their new ones were getting pretty bad ratings, so I decided I needed to go up a bit in quality. This one seems to fill the bill. I've had it about two months. It makes toast that's browned nicely on both sides. The set-up, where you turn the dial to your desired level of toastiness each time you use it, avoids those nasty surprises when you find a different member of the household has set the toaster to very dark when you like it light.
The larger size (it really holds four slices of bread, not six, BTW) is nice if you're baking dinner for one or two people. I've done the small pizza, a chicken breast, and a small meatloaf. All turned out nicely. I expect it will be nice this summer when I want to bake something for dinner and don't want to heat up the kitchen.
One last thing for those who care: it's very attractively styled, a great improvement over the older, rather dorky toaster ovens.
