Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Oster 6293 6-Slice Convection Toaster Oven, BlackCustomer Review: Nice toaster oven that cooks well Summary: 5 Stars
I had this toaster oven for almost a year now and so far it has work very well. It toasts great. We've done a lot of frozen food like chicken strips, nuggets, fish sticks, swedish meat balls, etc. I had roasted tomatos, baked fish, cookies, reheating pizza also. The toaster pratically get used almost everyday. So far, it cook well for us.
I love the full size pull out crumb tray in the FRONT!!!! I clean it out every so often since it is SO easy. All the other toaster I had had the tray on the bottom that you have to take the whole oven out to the trash can and dump it out. The size is nice too. We have a family of 4 so the "6 slice" capacity is just big enough. A lot of the time, I use this oven instead of the full-size oven. And it doesn't take up much more room than a lot of the other 4-slice oven.
The only "issue" I had was the knobs. They work fine, don't get me wrong. You do have to remember to do the right combination on them for what you are cooking with. If you want to toast, one knob need to be on the toast setting and the temperture knob needs to be on highest toast setting also. And when you want to bake, you need to remember to put the knob in the bake or convection setting. Let's say you baked something for 300 degree last and now you want to toast and you forget to redo the setting, your toast is not going to be very good. Therefore, I can see why other might complained about it didn't cook the food well if they forget to set the knobs correctly. It's not hard, just need to remember it.
Also, it has a lot more plastic than one thinks. But all in all, it's a good oven for the price. I'll just have to see how long it would last.
Customer Review: Keep looking Summary: 2 Stars
My husband and I bought this because we wanted something with a larger toasting capacity than our trusted old Black and Decker. With two racks, we thought it would be perfect - but we were WRONG, WRONG, WRONG.I'll begin by saying what we DO like about this toaster oven. It is very easy to clean due to the removable crumb tray, and all surfaces wipe down easily. Also, the broil function was very effective. Finally,(and I know this is pretty shallow) it is very attractive! Friends and family have commented on its appearance. Other than that, there's not much to like. First, you can't toast using both racks - if you do, the top bread gets completely blackened on the top and underdone on the bottom, with the opposite happening for the bread on the bottom rack. You are reduced to using only one rack, which must be repositioned to sit pretty much in the middle of the oven to be effective. There is also the issue of bread position on the racks - it can't be too far forward or back, because only part of the bread gets toasted if you don't center the slice perfectly. Second, the timer mechanism makes for highly variable results. Namely, it doesn't always turn off when it should and scorches the bread. Finally, it takes FOREVER to toast anything! We're talking in excess of 5 minutes for light to medium toasting - YIKES! It's like waiting for water to boil... If you intend on using this to toast anything, I would recommend that you keep looking. Otherwise, you might be very happy with it. Good luck!
Customer Review: Love it!! Summary: 5 Stars
We received this as a wedding present & six months later, it has been the best gift. I did notice the sides get hot, but haven't experienced any melting as other reviews have stated. I certainly would not stack anything on top of it. (But then, when is stacking something on ANY toaster oven, smart?)
It did take a minute to figure out the toaster....we have & it works great. The instructions state to turn timer past 20 min & then back to your preferred toast setting. I assume to distinguish between oven & toaster......I do this every time & french bread, toast, english muffins & bagels come out great every time. I do use the little tray they give you with the oven for toast most of the time but have set it on the rack & no burnt bottom. The only burnt I have experienced is the first time learning that the brown toast emblem means burnt. LOL I am curious what size bread was used for the "6 slice" but it is a roomy 4 slicer.
The oven works great on those hot days when you don't want to heat up the house any more. Breaded chicken & fish strips cook great-all the way thru & not mushy, even french fries came out crisp & crunchy, just how we like them. Everything I have cooked in it, has come out good.
I would recommend this for someone in a dorm or small apt were it could be the only cooking appliance - as long as it is set on countertop that is not flammable and has plenty of ventalation......which I would think applies to all toaster ovens.
Customer Review: So so product Summary: 2 Stars
This product is okay, but I guess you get what you pay for. I've had this for 2 years now and I'm considering replacing it considering I haven't used it much lately. I'm also looking into mounting this under the cabinet (it's not exactly the most space efficient unit out there) and am finding that it's impossible.
My big problems with it are (1) it toasts from back to front, so I've burned many a piece of toast in the rear while waiting for the front pieces to start browning; (2)it's really not a 6-slice toaster unless you want to squish or overlap pieces, which is disappointing considering the size of this unit; (3) the broiler doesn't really brown the meat on top, it just kinda boils the meat, so I gave up using this for that function a long time ago; and (4) it's not really a true convection oven as I've found one side cooks faster than the other (so the toaster toasts back-to-front while the oven bakes left to right).
As I said above, I'm seriously considering tossing this and either going back to a regular toaster that will take up considerably less space, or buying a black & decker like my mom used to have - that thing was great! 6 slices, broiled and baked well, and it could mount under the cabinet - I think I just convinced myself!
Customer Review: 100% Pure Junk Summary: 1 Stars
I bought this oven, one year ago almost to the day from Amazon. Service was 100%, however the oven was 100% junk.
The motor in it is very noisy after it is warmed up.
It does not regulate temperature well at all.
The door on it now does not open, but jams making it impossible to
open with out forcing it open.
The broiler part on it, no longer works, which stopped some time ago.
The black enamel on it is stained from cleaning it with detergents,
mainly dish washing liquid.
The door does not shut tightly at all, but is open at the bottom a good
3/8" of an inch or more.
The unit is of very poor construction and quality overall.
The rear of this unit gets very hot, BEWARE!!!!!!!!
I bought this unit to cook various finger type foods. I do not use it all the time, but one or two days a week only. For what I paid for this unit on Dec. 17, 07 @59.99, I was taken to the cleaners. Do yourself a huge favor, and buy something else. I have replaced it with a GE some time ago and it is performing extremely well. The Oster, is going in the trash on the next pickup. Oh, I would not even give this junk a star, but it is required to do so.
