I bought this item mainly because I was tired of cleaning a pot after boiling rice in it. This guy not only makes perfect rice every time, but has revolutionized the way I make dinner. Except for my grill, this is the most valuable cooking tool I own. I make everything in this steamer because it's convenient to use, makes perfectly cooked, healthy food, and is very easy to clean and maintain. I've owned this same machine for three years and have had no problems. Includes a small book with cooking times for many different items, but anything you normally sauté or bake can pretty much be steamed, just use your imagination. Has a timer feature so you can set rice up in the morning, and have it cooked and ready to go when you get home. Also has a `keep warm' feature so if the steamed goods finish before your other dishes, they stay hot until you are ready to serve. Go to the supermarket and buy some of those Healthy Choice "Steam Fresh" meals - look at the instructions, they tell you to zap them in a microwave?!?!
Well, here's the scoop... You can steam them in this steamer (first take off the protective film) and boy do they taste great! Much tastier and far more healthy than zapped food. You simply put the whole dish in the steamer for 20-25 mins and it's ready!
The food comes out hot, steamy, fresh and juicy - (steamer adds a little water into the mix) - throw in a dash of wine... mix it up and whalla! Delicious! Gourmet food every time! I use this steamer about 3 times a day now.
Another idea - try steaming a whole apple for desert - it takes about 25 minutes too - tastes wonderful!
Make sure you get the one with the digital LCD timer readout.

Customer Review: Too Slow for Rice - BPA free

A great product but when cooking either jasmine, basmati, or brown rice, it takes forever. And by forever, I mean around 55 minutes.
If I'm steaming rice I can only steam one other item and dinner usually always consists of rice, veggies, and protein. So the protein gets thrown in the toaster oven, no biggie.
When taking the lid off you have to use potholders, and keep the lid perfectly level or all the water from the steam will drip into your food. So far I've been successful. It's also a little difficult to take the bowl out of the steamer as there's not much room between the handles and the outer steamer when you have potholders on.
Much less work to clean than conventional cookware, yay!
I called and emailed Oster to ask about BPA in the steamer bowls and was told in both instances that there is NO BPA in the bowls!

Outstanding...that is the one word to describe this product, it's reliability, and performance. You'll be cooking everything and anything in this just to try it out. Steaming is IT for the wholesome taste, vitamins, and nutrients foods provide unless you just eat it raw.
Not sure why they include a recipe book...nothing to do with the steamer. They just want you to get the cravings (and the pocket book open) to buy the Bread Maker, the Juicer, the blender, and the entire line of Oster appliances.
Not to be knocking Amazon or any of its merchants, but we have seen (and bought ours) at Target for $29.99 and Lowe's hardware had them for the same price. These are not sale items, this was just their standard price points.
So save yourself $20.00, order it online, no tax, no waiting in line, sometimes they offer free shipping.

I bought a new in the box one from a thrift store. It worked for about 5 minuets then the heater stopped.
I then ordered one from Amazon and the minute display digit did not show and the display was so dim I couldn't read the other ones. So I sent it back and just received the third one. This one has all the digits but the display is also very dim. From 3 feet away you cant see the numbers. I have to use a flashlight to read it or get within a few inches. The background is a dark grey color. If it was white or had a back light, It would be great but as is its nowhere as easy to see as the picture shows. The display is recessed and in a shadow if you have overhead lights.
I do not know if its just the ones I got or if this is a quality control problem.
