Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Oster 5712 Electronic 2-Tier 6-Quart Food SteamerCustomer Review: Not for frequent usage, hard to clean, weird design Summary: 2 Stars
I cooked with the Oster steamer at least once almost every day for the past month and a half.
Tonight it let out a few beeps and died. Refuses to come back to life.
I just ordered a "Well Being" steamer, looks much better built.
I honestly suggest you try something else, this one has problems:
-Very awkwardly placed external water reservoir fill-up hole. It just wasn't meant to be used.
-Bad, loosely fitting plastic baskets (the rice cup is a joke in this matter)
-Hard to clean egg-holder design, hard to clean "lines" underneath the baskets. Dishwasher rarely suffices.
-There will always be water left in the reservoir - nearly impossible to get all of it out from the little 'window' part.
Steamed food is a very important part of my diet, and this isn't my first steamer - frankly, this one is poorly made.
I guess you should be fine if you only use it a few times a week - but then what happens to the water that's stuck in the reservoir?
Buy at your own risk. Poorly built, low quality product right here.
A steamer is basically a kettle with a timer and places for buckets on top; it should be able to handle heating water.
Customer Review: My new favorite kitchen appliance! Summary: 5 Stars
I researched every form of steamer from bamboo stacked steamers, to rice steamers, to this, double steamer. Previously I used a microwave two piece steamer or my stovetop stockpot with steamer basket. I LOVE this steamer! I have used it for various vegetables (fresh and frozen), many different rices including the Lipton flavored rice packages (after experimenting with water quantity - use less water than package instructions), and everything has been wonderful. The flavors are fresher, the texture is more appealing, and the effort is much easier than my traditional ways of preparing vegetables and rice. I love the double tray, I only wish there were two of the larger basket. Cleanup is super easy, very very easy. I leave the parts on my counter for a day to air dry. I have found I rarely pack this into my cabinet since I am constantly using it. Have not experimented with meats yet, or other options with pastas, potatoes, etc. There are so many rice varieties available now I have been busy making different flavor combinations along with fresh or frozen vegetables (corn on cob, green beans, broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, squash, zucchini, peas, corn, mixed medleys, and more).
Customer Review: Why Didn't I Buy This Earlier? Summary: 5 Stars
I looked and looked at the electric steamers on Amazon before buying this one. I wanted to be able to cook hard-boiled eggs, steam veggies crisp-tender and do it without standing over the stove babysitting a pan. I am only cooking for two, so this steamer seemed a bit large. But once I got it, I realized there are times I need to steam large quantities. So this size is just right for us.
It took lots of experimenting to get the proper amount of steaming time for various foods. The booklet that came in the package gave ballpark times, but those times usually usually resulted in overcooked things, especially veggies. Once I learned to use a shorter time, things came out just as we like them. Yellow squash and zucchini are especially great as are broccoli, carrots!
I was careful not to undercook the eggs. It's really nice to have them cooked, in the fridge, ready to put on a salad or make egg salad or deviled eggs. Easy.
I have this steamer on my countertop all the time. I'm from the clean countertop school, so you can see if I would leave it out, I really like it.

Customer Review: BEST Steamer on the market!!!! Summary: 5 Stars
THIS STEAMER IS THE BEST!! I have used it for years with -perfect- results everytime (at home or work). Toss in your veggies, fish, pork or chicken, sprinkle on seasoning (Mrs.Dash & spray butter works great) turn it on and forget about it. As a nurse its a blessing when you've cooked your lunch and it gets really busy, you can always go back and after a brief re-steaming, your food is hot and perfect. I use a non-stick spray and lighty coat the baskets/collection tray so clean-up is a breeze (this also prevents staining the plastic). COOK AN ENTIRE MEAL ALL AT THE SAME TIME: Top basket cook fresh Vegs- carrots, snap peas, cabbage, red potatoes, corn cobs, green beans, sweet potatoes, squash, zucchini, asparagus .... (retain all the good noutrients with steaming); bottom basket cook: ultra moist/mouth watering- chicken & fish....(low in fat with steaming); clean one unit vs pots, pans, stovetop and oven. It also gives a recipe for Banana Nut Bread (haven't tried yet), cook rice, even eggs and/or potatoes for (hardboiled/devil eggs or potatoe salad) I will NEVER go back, WISH I COULD GIVE IT 10 STARS!!
Customer Review: Outstanding Value Summary: 5 Stars
I usually do not write reviews, but I had to write one for this product. I bought my steamer about a year ago, after my daughter had purchased one and recommended it. I was a little concerned after reading some of the reviews about the drip dish, and modifying the unit to make it more usable, but took the plunge.
I love it! The unit is reliable, easy to use, easy to clean, and easy to store. I use it constantly, whether for veges or fish or chicken or steamed dumplings. I do not have any problem with the drip tray, and as I mentioned, I have even cooked a chicken in the unit without any problems. I use it as it came, and have had absolutely no problem with it. (I do have a separate rice steamer from Japan so do not use this steamer for rice).
Several years ago I moved, and my old house had had a Miele wall steamer. I was joking with my daughter while I was steaming dinner tonight and remarked that I sure had found some real savings with my Oster over the Miele! Easier to clean, too!!
Seriously, I would recommend this product to anyone who likes to steam food.
