Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Oster 4716 Egg CookerCustomer Review: Easiest hard boiled eggs! Summary: 5 Stars
This is the second Oster Egg Cooker that I've owned. I bought this one to replace my original, which lasted for many for years. It cooks up to eight (8) perfect hard boiled eggs at once. Very easy... Just put a little water in the bottom of the cooker, ( I add a little salt, too, in case an egg happens to crack open it helps stop it from getting too messy), press each egg lightly on the point in the center of the unit to put a very small air hole in the egg, set each egg up-right in the round rack, put the lid on, push the "on" button and wait for them to cook... that's it! It will also make four (4) poached eggs, but I don't know how well it does that because we don't like poached eggs. Definately recommend this product if you like hard boiled eggs and are tired of standing around waiting on a boiling pan of water & eggs.
Customer Review: It did an acceptable job Summary: 4 Stars
After 35 or so years our Oster cooker succumbed to the to the melted lid syndrome. I suspect that the thermostat got stuck in the "on" position. It didn't receive a lot of use, perhaps twice a month.
We seldom used the poacher because of the elsewhere mentioned sticking problem. However, cooking in the shell worked very well.
As with everything else, judging by recent reviews they have cheapened it up despite it being about the most costly cooker on Amazon.
My principal issue with it was that the unit couldn't be submerged. This may also be true for all cookers; I haven't checked yet.
In any event, we need to buy a new one and am unsure about which model to replace it with. I hardly expect to get another 35 years out of the next purchase, not that I expect to live that long.
Customer Review: Not As Good As The Original! Summary: 4 Stars
Just rcvd my NEW Oster Egg Cooker and I am somewhat disappointed. My old 70's model (still working) cooks much better. I decided to purchase a new one just in case my old one gives up the ghost. The inside base is plastic, not metal. Could be the reason that the new one didn't cook as fast and didn't seem as hot. My old one was always dry after cooking...the new one left water in the base after poaching. Using the same amount of water, three tablespoons, the egg never finished cooking the yucky part of the white. I even left the cover on trying to finish the egg, but to no avail! After doing this with my old one the yolk would have been completely cooked! I will try adding more water next time and hope for the best. As the old adage states..."If it ain't broke, don't fix it!" Are you listening, Oster? Metal is better!
Customer Review: A "green" applicance available in only in white Summary: 5 Stars
After reading the Amazon reviews, we bought the Oster egg coooker--primarily to use for poaching. The product is great. Two observations:
1. The poacher is nearly filled to the brim with extra-large eggs--which is fine, and if one is careful not to spill any eggwhite, cleanup takes seconds. The trick is not to let uncooked eggwhite spill onto the metal rack or the base.
2. (I don't think anyone mentioned this, yet) Over time the unit will easily pay for itself. It uses only 500 watts, and, then, only for a few minutes to boil a minuscule amount of water. A pot of water, brought to a boil on the stovetop, will consume 10 times the amount of energy. Can't comment on the cost of gas, but the cost of running an electric burner to boil a pot of water--before you even start cooking!--is not cheap.
Customer Review: WOW!!! WHAT A BREEZE...... Summary: 5 Stars
My husband eats a lot of hard boiled eggs during the week and of course, the little wife was in charge of boiling up a batch every couple of days. Well, what I hated about that was....having to take a pot out, fill it with water, wait for ever until it boiled, and never knowing what the best timing would be for a perfect hard boiled egg.
This egg cooker solved all of my problems. You just add water following the labeled levels for soft, medium or hard eggs, pin hole eggs (round side up) and push the on button and wait. PERFECT EGGS EVERY TIME. No lost egg white with shell. And I make two poached eggs every morning and the clean up is fairly easy. We are in love and as silly as it sounds, will never go back to the traditional way of boiling eggs as long as these egg cookers are around. Thanks.
