Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Oster 4716 Egg Cooker

Customer Review: What a waste.
Summary: 2 Stars

After my old West Bend egg cooker died (from lack of care, frankly, we let our hard water corrode it!) I went looking for a replacement. There wasn't anything wrong with my old West Bend, but it didn't strike me as special either, so why not try something new? After reading the reviews this seemed like a great option.

Wow. What a mistake! I'm giving this Oster piece of junk away to some poor soul who'd rather have a poorly designed egg cooker than none at all. I didn't appreciate the great little features of my West Bend. Namely: a plastic tray to easily lift the eggs off the heating element when complete (to run under cold water to stop the cooking) and a cup to measure the proper amount of water, not just for how done you want your eggs, but for how many you're cooking.

The Oster has neither of these features. It's *impossible* to lift the eggs out and run them under cold water without burning yourself. There are no handles on the egg holding tray, and it's metal besides. And the water level indicators are incorrect. We precisely added the amount of water for soft boiled and they came out overdone. And there's no way to adjust for different numbers of eggs.

I can only say to those people that love this gadget that they've not experienced other, better options. Needless to say I just ordered the West Bend model.

Customer Review: Most fabulous invention

If you're like me-- and get bored sitting around waiting for an egg to boil... walk away and have an egg thats cracked with white goo coming from the crack--- or pull out too soon and have an almost cooked yolk... This is PERFECT.

You can put in lots of eggs at once--- More than enough for 3 people. Great for salads, breakfast... etc. You decide how you like your eggs-- hard, or easy... Then you fill up the water line (using a glass, as the instructions say not to place under the faucet) that matches your goal. I like my eggs cooked very very well--- so the line inside the cooker (and the directions that I can now toss because the instructions will always be there) says to fill to the outside line. I did--- put in my eggs-- put the lid on-- pushed the button and did my own things until they were complete. They came out PERFECT.

I cleaned the yellow remains with a paper towel. I just wiped it off. I don't know if thats right-- but I figured the devise wasn't supposed to get wet from the faucet-- so I'd use the towel.

I did not try the sunny side up egg thing-- I think they're gross. But it seems that that accessory is easy to clean. You can probably stick it in the dish washer. It's resembles a small metal plate with four sections.

Customer Review: A Vegetarian Necessity and a Handy Gadget Everyone
Summary: 4 Stars

If you're a vegetarian and like me rely on eggs as a quick source of protein when you're too busy or tired of beans this little gadget will make you're life so much easier. Or if you're an omnivore and just want quick easy inexpensive protein.

I love poached eggs, but hate that they are often soggy from the water they are cooked in, not to mention that it takes patience and practice to get it just right. This egg cooker does a fantastic job of poaching eggs. They are perfectly cooked every time with just the right about of runny yolk. TIP: Don't forget to lightly oil the pan. It's not all that non-stick and you're eggs will stick and the pan is difficult to clean if you don't oil it first. I few drops of olive oil rubbed into the pan with a paper towel works great. Use a plastic spoon to lift and slide your poached eggs out.

I particularly like that you can soft, medium, or hard cook your eggs in the shell. No cracked shells, no having to remember, "do I time them before the water boils or after?". This gadget remembers for you. I normally only buy a gadget if it can do more than one thing (thanks Alton Brown) and well this does I can make a multitude of egg dishes with much more ease than before. Worth every penny.

My grandmother had an oster egg poacher when i was growing up back in the 80's and it was brown in color. I inherited it in the 90's when she was sent to a nursing home. I used it until it did not work until 2000. I was sick when it finally went kaputz! I have been searching for one ever since and relatives have bought me other poachers and I ended up throwing them away before even owning them a year. They literally crumbled because of how cheap they were made. I finally got on the internet in October of 2007 and started looking for it and I finally found it!! I so far have ordered myself one, my grandmother-in-law one (she is 85) and my mother-in-law saw it and she wants me to order her 2 of them for her own use!!! Everyone that sees this poacher just loves it! and the funny thing is, is that nobody has ever seen it before in any stores. I have loved this product since I was probably about 8 to 10 years old. I have always loved my eggs poached this very way! Don't ever stop making it! gotta go I've got to order 2 more for my mother-in-law for her birthday and also my aunt (my grandmothers daughter)said she wants me to order her one because she hasn't seen one also since her mother passed away. thanks for this questionnare!

Customer Review: Great Egg Poacher.
Summary: 5 Stars

This is one of the few speciality cookers that I actually use on a regular basis. It is easy to use, put the eggs in the correct tray, add the appropriate amount of water, and push the red button. It turns itself off when finished. No more guessing as to when to start the timer.

If you like poached eggs, it is a must. It makes great poached eggs. Minor changes in the amount of water in a bottom of the cooker controls the hardness of the poaching. So after a couple of tests, you will figure out exactly the amount of water to add to get them just right.

This is my second Oster egg cooker. My first one died after many years of good service. I looked at the other egg cookers and they only cook 2-3 poached eggs at a time. The Oster cooker hold 4 eggs in the poaching tray. Since it holds 4 eggs at a time, the egg compartments in the poaching tray are too small to hold jumbo eggs. Since I never use jumbo eggs, this is not a problem for me.

The cooker is also really nice to make a hard boiled eggs. The hard boiled eggs are cooked to perfection. However, it only cooks 7 at a time. For hard boiling a large number of eggs, as needed when dying Easter eggs, a large pot is easier and quicker.
