Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Oster 4207 Electric Wine-Bottle Opener

Customer Review: Surprisingly Good
Summary: 4 Stars

I got the Oster Wine opener as a Christmas gift. I'm a little leery of electronics taking the place of perfectly useful manual tools. I've used a "waiter's corkscrew" for years, and I'm quite adept at using it. I also found the Oster's design a little faux-modern, like it was trying too hard. So I was surprised at how easily it opened my wine bottle. It's designed to completely pull the cork when pressing the down-arrow button, and then stop (I've read other negative reviews where it seemed like the reviewer reversed the screw direction once the corkscrew was completely inserted, and the cork, of course, never left the bottle). It surprised me that by simply pressing the up-arrow button it neatly, if a little slowly, ejected the cork from the device. It has worked on every kind of cork I tried - American cork, European cork, or synthetic cork.

Why only 4-stars? Like a number of reviewers, I noticed that the Oster Wine opener started getting weaker after about three months. I examined the device, and noticed that its charging light (a translucent half-globe on the top) was not lit when I placed it in the charger. I checked the base of the device and, sure enough, one of the contact points was completely covered with black. I scraped the carbon off and applied a little WD-40 with a cotton swab; it has charged perfectly ever since.

I should note that this is NOT a device for people with arthritis. You need a firm grip on the bottle, or the Oster just makes the bottle spin. If you have arthritic pain when gripping, or have a weak grip, this device is probably not for you.

Customer Review: how do i love thee? let me count the corks.

We have used this nifty helper daily for more than a year and a half, and are still thankful every time we use it. (We used to use a clunky manual angel wing wine opener which I had to pull so hard to get a cork out, I almost knocked my front teeth out a couple of times when it finally released).

The opener itself is only 1 and 7/8 inches in diameter -- making it fit easily into your hand -- and it has a soft rubber material on it which makes it easy to keep a hold of. A good sized toggle switch makes it easy to use: toggle down to lower the corkscrew into the cork and continue to hold down until it brings it back up, then toggle up to spin the cork out of the unit.

Sitting in its base, this opener measures about 11 and 3/4 inches high. The base measures about 4 inches wide by 4 and 1/2 inches deep. There is a nice foil cutter included which stores in the back of the base... very convenient. After many uses, it still cuts foil easily.

3 TIPS FOR YOU:
1) MAKE SURE THE OPENER IS ALIGNED STRAIGHT UP AND DOWN before you go into the cork/bottle neck to avoid busting the cork up or drilling into the glass. 2) REMOVE THE CORK AFTER EACH PULL so that you don't forget a cork inside and try to use the unit the next time... things might get jammed in there if so. 3) We've found that this opener struggles a bit with some of the new rubber corks. Some of them don't budge easily and we don't want to burn the motor out trying, so we still have a manual opener as back-up for these rare troublemakers.

Customer Review: Serious dessign flaws
Summary: 2 Stars

I found this product wanting for several reasons. Firstly, I was disappointed at how slow it was. Much slower than a simple corkscrew. But It worked ok for several months after I purchased it until a cork broke off when I reversed the motor to eject the cork jamming the mechanism making it unusable. I could see the housing was held together with small phillips screws, so I thought it would be a simple matter to open the housing and remove the broken off cork. This turned out to be much harder than expected as the two halves of he housing were held together with 8 screws as well as with clips within the housing which made opening it quite difficult. I removed the cork within and then tried to reassemble the housing which also proved difficult. Then when tried it the motor wouldn't turn in one direction, the direction which pulled a cork from a bottle.
When I contacted Oster so I could return the product so they could see the problems and perhaps correct the design, I was told they don't accept products returned. They gave me name of a service center 60 miles away; when I discussed the problem with them I was told that he couldn't repair this type of product and opined that "..they make them cheap and difficult if not impossible to repair.
So I've concluded that this product is rather silly since it's so slow, and disgusted that one can't remove broken corks within easily. I'd stick to a simple corkscrew or one of the lever activated (Rabbit) which are pretty foolproof.

Customer Review: MY ANSWER TO AN ARTHRITIC NIGHTMARE
Summary: 5 Stars

THIS IS THE BEST PRODUCT I HAVE EVER HAVE NEVER BEEN ABLE TO OPEN A BOTTLE OF WINE OR ANY KIND OF LIQUOR THAT HAS A STOPPER IN IT.........FOR ONE THING, I DON'T HAVE THE STRENGTH AND FOR THE OTHER, MY ARTHRITIS KEEPS ME FROM DOING IT.

THIS ITEM IS FOIL REMOVER THAT COMES WITH IT MAKES IT A SNAP TO REMOVE THE FOIL AND THEN TO REMOVE THE CORK IS INCREDIBLE........

AFTER OPENING A BOTTLE OF WINE 1 NIGHT, I PUT THE CORK BACK INTO THE BOTTLE AND PUT IT IN THE FRIDGE.......WHEN I TOOK THE BOTTLE OUT TO USE IT, THE CORK WOULDN'T COME OUT, SO I GOT OUT MY TRUSTY CORK REMOVER AND REMOVED THE SAME CORK FOR THE SECOND TIME.........

THANKS SO MUCH FOR WHOEVER HAD THIS ALSO PURCHASED THE FOUR STOPPERS, WHICH MAKES IT POSSIBLE TO BE ABLE TO KEEP A PARTIALLY EMPTY BOTTLE FRESH.

WOULD RECOMMEND THIS TO ANYONE, AND PLAN ON BUYING SOME FOR GIFTS.

Customer Review: Oh yah, works like "BUDDUH"! So easy, even a CAVEMAN can use it!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

If you love wine, you will TOTALLY love this gift. When I received this gift for Christmas, I thought it looked cool, but honestly was skeptic as to how well it would really work. But, once I tried it, I quickly found how EASY it is to use!!! I thought the rabbit ears corkscrew opener was really great, but it doesn't even compare to the Oster 4207. I've even demonstrated it at parties to everyone's amazement. It makes you want to keep uncorking more bottles of wine because it's also FUN to use. In seconds you have wine ready to pour (as well as an unthrashed cork - every time!) Another plus, you don't have to look for it when you need it, because it conveniently sits on the counter in its compact charger without taking up space. When it's in the charger, the dome light on top shines red. It's slick, ergonomic, modern, a cool conversation piece, very portable and ready to grab and bring to any dinner or party. And, seriously, I can't believe how low the price is!! I thought it would cost a lot more. So, I'm buying a bunch as gifts to friends n fam who also love wine. (The best gifts to give are the ones YOU would love to receive yourself.) I'm surprised I don't see this used in restaurants, yet. It really is impressive! There's only one thing wrong with the Oster 4207. There should be a WARNING label on it: "Product may cause addiction to bottle opening."
