Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Oster 4207 Electric Wine-Bottle OpenerCustomer Review: Good value - but beware of killing your battery Summary: 4 Stars
This is my second edit to the review. I've lowered the rating from 5 to 4 stars.
I still love this opener. But, it does split real corks now and again generally on the very good or older wines just when you really don't want it to. I finally realized why it does that. The screw itself only goes a little over half-way down the cork, so if it didn't screw dead center, or if the cork is slightly brittle from age, then it tears it up. Tonight it broke the top half of the cork off, so I figured I'd remove the torn off piece from the opener and stick the screw back down there and get the rest of it. Well, the screw simply doesn't go that far down....and that in my opinion is why it occasionally tears up corks. Seems that could be pretty easily fixed if Oster wanted to.
In addition, it's a very fast corkscrew, so it's geared pretty high. Now and again even with a nearly full charge, it will screw down and just stop. Then you have to back it out and try again and sometimes tear up the cork due to that. So, Oster should make a two-speed automatic that gears down when working on a snug cork. Or they could create the world's smallest "Continuously Variable Transmission". I think I'm joking about those suggestions, but that's what it needs.
Anyway, for the money I'm still happy with the unit and would buy it again.
My wife bought me a battery powered wine opener about two years ago.
I got tired of replacing/recharging the batteries, so I thought there must
be one that is rechargable. I researched some and saw so many good reviews
of this unit that I figured I'd go with it.
It's so much faster than my old battery-powered unit. The other thing
that REALLY impressed me, is that I don't have to have a firm grip on the bottle.
This opener apparently grips the bottle while it's un-corking it so that it doesn't
turn in my hands. My battery-powered opener required a very firm grip on the bottle
and sometimes the bottle rotated in my hands if it were a little damp.
I've only owned the Oster for about four days, so I can't comment on how reliable it is.
But, so far I'm extremely happy with the purchase. I have opened both
real and artificial corks. But, the acid test will be Kendall Jackson Chardonney whose
fake cork nearly always got stuck in my old opener. If the cork gets stuck with
Kendall, then I'll have to lower my rating from five to four stars.
I'm updating this review after product support got back to me....
I wrote the review above for this de-corker after I owned it for about four days.
Love it and still give it five stars.
But, one thing I didn't understand from the operating instructions is that
they don't tell you to disconnect the power from the charging base after the unit
is fully charged. All they tell you is to return it to the base after use.
That implies you can keep it plugged in. They do say it opens x# bottles before requiring a charge,
but that's not the same as telling us to unplug the unit after it's fully charged.
I wondered about the usual rechargable battery rules in that it is not good
to recharge after each use of whatever product it is. To get the best battery
life you have to train the battery memory by nearly running it out, then charging.
So, I wrote product support and they said exactly that. Unplug the base after the
unit is fully charged and just use the base as a place to put the unit after each use.
I read a number of reviews on this site that stated they loved the unit but after
some time it opened fewer and fewer bottles before requiring a charge. I suspect
that most of those folks are ones who charge their units continuously, through no fault of their own
since the manual is not clear on that subject.
I'd rather spend an extra five bucks and have a power switch on the cradle than to have
to unplug and plug the thing in. But, it's not that big a deal either.
I still love the unit. It's very fast and requires little physical strength to use.
Excellent design.
I still haven't tried the acid test which is Kendell Jackson's artificial cork. That thing
always got stuck in my battery powered unit. Maybe I'll pick up a bottle this weekend. :-)
