Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Oster 4093 Classic Beehive Blender, Silver

Customer Review: Nice but not as pictured
Summary: 3 Stars

If you are expecting a gleaming chrome blender, look elsewhere. This is a nice machine (model 4093) but it is not the shiny chrome finish pictured on the Amazon page - or on the box! The finish is more of a polished satin metal, almost dull. I bought this to replace an over 35 year old Osterizer that had finally given up the ghost. That one was real chrome - and heavy! This description reads "clad in lustrous chrome". I have no idea what kind of metal this one really is or if it is metal, but it is not my idea of chrome. Disappointing but I don't want to bother sending it back. Also the model I received has a toggle switch not a dial as pictured on the Amazon page and has only one speed and pulse - the description says two speeds and pulse. And, yes, it is noisy.

AFTER USE: I think this is going back. It left a good bit of my powdered breakfast shake plastered to the upper sides of the glass. There is only one speed - really high. And the noise!

RETURN: I notice as I am packing it up that the box reads "all metal drive" which leads me to believe that the base is something else. I used it twice for breakfast shakes, which is not a good idea since the only speed is "high". MIght be good for chopping ice but I have had it and am sending it back. Very disappointed. Amazon needs to work on their product descriptions.

Customer Review: Simple does it best
Summary: 5 Stars

We bought this blender after a horrid experience with some Cuisianart mulit-speed blender that turned out to be a piece of ... Originally I was attracted to all the bells and whistles, but after all that leaked on the first pouring, I realized we had a problem, Houston.

After cruising the ratings here, we bought the basic, two-speed (read: go and pulse) GORGEOUS chrome beehive blender. Somehow we got the one that had the mini-jar for dressings, the food processor, and milkshake blade with chrome cannister, all for less than the Cuisinart Multi-Function Mistake. :)

This thing kicks. I've made dressings in it, and it was done with ease and they were blended well. Most importantly, I've made several batches of adult drinks involving ice, and as long as you add the ice a few cubes at a time, it turns out perfectly smooth (no ice chips hitting your teeth as you tip the glass).

I LOVE OUR OSTERIZER BEEHIVE BLENDER!!!! Simple is really all you need in a blender. If it's something that needs a bit of mixing, hit the pulse button as needed. If it's serious mixing, turn it on. In my opinion, speed 3, 6, and 9 are not required. This does it all, and looks MIGHTY fine while doing it. If only we had the counter space to leave it out.......it's SO pretty!!!!

Happy blending, anything!

Customer Review: Beautiful and effective!
Summary: 4 Stars

All of my small appliances are from Oster so I was excited to hear all the great reviews for this blender. It truly is a beautiful blender and I have it displayed on my counter now. I love the retro base and it beats all the plastic ones I looked into. Unfortunately the cord is just a little too short and I have to leave it unplugged when not in use. I'll estimate that the cord is just under 2 feet long to give you an idea.

Update - In my intial review I commented that I difficulty blending without stopping the blender to push food down. After having used the blender at least a dozen times now I'm finding that I simply was not using enough liquid/yogurt in my smoothies. I am also now in the habit of using the pulse mode first and then switching to the blend mode to really get the chunks of food out. Once I got the ratio of ingredients down this blender makes actually smooth smoothies! Even better than cafe-bought.

Clean up was easy, I like that anything that gets dirty in the blending process can be put in the dishwasher. I also like the availability of replacement parts-- especially the small rubber gaskets. I'm sure I'll either lose it or melt one in the dishwasher eventually.

Overall I'm very pleased with the blender, and I would recommend it to a friend.

Customer Review: **DO NOT PURCHASE THIS BLENDER**
Summary: 1 Stars

Alas, my search for a blender that -isn't- a piece of junk continues! I had a Waring for a couple years, and in those 2 years, the motor burned out twice. The second time I sent it back, UPS broke it, so I used the claim money to escape Waring's clutches, and bought the Osterizer Beehive Blender.

It arrived in the mail 2 days ago. Yesterday morning I made my first (and, coincidentally, last) smoothie with it. It was GREAT! I loved it! It crushed the ice and pulverized the frozen fruit, and the 500 watts stirred it up so I didn't have to use a spoon. I was happy, and intended to go write a 5-star review on Amazon.

But then, this morning, I wake up and try to make another one. I pulse it a few times to break up the ice, then turn it to "ON". It sounds fine. I flip it to off, then pulse, and when I flipped it back to "ON", it didn't work. No smoke, no burning odors, no grinding noises, no chugging, no struggling, just...stopped working.

I suppose, if your particular assembly works for more than a few days, then it'd be a great blender. But, come on! If you can't make a blender that works more than once, well, what business do you have making blenders?

Folks, unless you're in the market for a one-time-use blender, I suggest you keep on looking.

Customer Review: Powerful blender
Summary: 4 Stars

Like some other reviewers noted, this is a noisy blender. But I still highly recommend Oster.

Pluses
* You can't beat the carafe. It actually pours like it's supposed to (I can't say that about any other blender I've tried - they all drip and slurp instead of pour in a stream)!
* There's enough plastic in the world!! Oster is one of the few brands that comes with a glass jar.
* It has a very powerful motor. And one speed is adequate. Before I purchased this blender, I had an old multi-speed Oster that lasted decades (the motor finally burned out last month). All I really ever used was the high speed.
* The jar is really easy to wash; the parts separate easily. The base can be wiped off quickly.
* Reasonably priced compared to some other brands. And it works much better (I tried other blenders owned by family members' before I purchased this one)

Minuses (only one)
* It's noisy (I'm not kidding)! Every morning when I make a fruit smoothie for my family, I just don the earplugs (yes it's that bad - but I'm also sensitive to loud noises). Again, the machine is totally worth putting up with the noise. MUCH more aggravating are carafes that don't pour properly and are difficult to clean. And I hate plastic.
