Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Oster 4093 Classic Beehive Blender, Silver

Customer Review: Nice But Needs Improvement
Summary: 3 Stars

First the Good:

The blender is stylish. It looks good when just sitting on the counter. The glass blending Jar has graduated markings on the side(s) for easy measurements of liquids. The high/off/low uses a toggle switch. "High" is up. When in the high position the switch remains on. When you push the toggle to the "low" (down) position, then release pressure, it returns to the off position. The switch is tension loaded. The toggle switch is perfect for pulsing the contents. Max wattage is actually marked on the bottom as 600W.

Now the Bad:

The power plug cord is only 23 inches in length. This is a major flaw. Within the product booklet it states, you may plug in an extension cord. I consider this a major Fail. The booklet also indicated the sealing rubber lid is "leak proof". Not true. I tested this blender by filling the blending jar about half way with water. Water is most likely the thinnest liquid you will ever mix. The lid does leak. Not allot, but if stickier liquids also leak; Well you get the point. This blender is EXTREMELY loud. I would guess around 115 db. Around twice as loud as a vacuum cleaner.

Conclusion:

I consider the short power cord a major fail. There is no excuse for the lid to leak. A few minor changes and this blender would rate much higher. The price was right at just over the half century mark delivered. Rates a 6 out of 10. Beware: the blade is extremely sharp. Use caution when cleaning.

Note: I have only used it once so far as I just received it.

Customer Review: DO NOT BUY THIS BLENDER..
Summary: 1 Stars

I have been cooking for years, and used a huge variety of blenders. This is the worst blender I have ever used... Here is why:

1) The lid. The lid doesn't fasten down tight enough to make a water-seal. If you blend with more than the jug half full, even with the lid on, and your hand on the lid - when the thing starts up, you WILL get liquid shooting up out of the lid. Terrible.

2) The removable middle area to the lid isn't held securely in place. Because the lid doesn't fit tightly enough, you HAVE to put your hand on the lid, to get a better seal. Any pressure at all (and I mean even light pressure) will push the middle removable section INTO THE JUG OF THE BLENDER. And yes, I did have this removable section placed in securely, and correctly. This happended the second time I used it. The result was the lid falling into the blender jug, when the blender was running, which diced up the plastic removable section that fell in... The result - a sauce with a bunch of plastic in..

Now for the good points:

1) It is powerfull, and crushes ice wonderfully.
2) The fact that it very finely chopped up the removable lid section is testament to how powerfull this thing is!
3) This is most likely a great blender, if you only fill it 1/4 full, and don't use a liquid to start with (my problems came about when I was blending a spanish broth)... I am sure it would work great for smoothies, made of frozen fruit and ice.

All in all, find another blender.. The lid is a complete design joke...

Customer Review: Oster Classic Blender
Summary: 5 Stars

I have used various Oster blenders for years. I have also used the Waring blender which is a little better but the replacement parts are less available and a lot more expensive. Oster has various blade options and various container options plus easily available and inexpensive replacement parts. To me the better choice is Oster and if it burns out just replace it. You can save the jar and the base as a spare. I have never used a blender in a commercial way but for me the Osters have been quite satisfactory for use in my own kitchen. The shape of the base of the glass jar on the Waring blender is like a four-leaf clover which gives a slightly superior blending action. Also the glass jar of the Waring blender is thicker and harder to break but if you do break it, the replacement cost is as high as a whole new Oster blender. You can't remove the jar from the base of the Waring blender to clean it or change jars like you can with the Oster. With time the blades on the Waring blender will get stiff and hard to turn but with a lot of persistence you can free them up with WD 40. With Oster the blades are cheap and easy to replace. Of course either one of them will do the job. I don't currently have a Waring blender but I've had the Oster Classic Beehive Blender for several years and have had no problem with it. I give it five stars because although it is not prefect, I feel it is the best available option. If I did buy a Waring blender, I would want it in addition to the Oster blender.

Customer Review: Mine's better than yours!
Summary: 2 Stars

I just bought the Hamilton Beach 52277 Classic Chrome 12-Speed Blender, Silver (for under six bills with shipping) to replace an aging but still working Osteriser (that had lasted two decades). With 800 watts, my new one is far more powerful. I also like the glass jar (as my Oster had) for being able to blend hot soups. The heavier Hamilton lid is very flexible but somehow survives the dishwasher without any softening (unlike the Oster). Moreover, the gear teeth the jar sits on are straight (rather than angled - what was starting to regularly slip on my old Oster) for a better fit. Even though I rarely use more than fast, slow, and pulse (the Hamilton blender has ten speeds and pulse), I'm glad I picked this one over the Oster 4093 Classic Beehive Blender, Chrome with its noisier but weaker 500 watts, the need to handwash a loose fitting lid, and just two speeds (on and pulse). Finally, I have also seen greater splashing as others have commented elsewhere from the new "Wave-Action" blade (common to both blenders) when dealing with very thick additives (but, the tighter lid of the Hamilton should mean it's less likely to spill than the Oster). I'm posting this review here as a comparison for those considering this chrome Oster blender.

Customer Review: sometimes, simpler is better
Summary: 5 Stars

Having looked at several different brands and styles of blenders, we decided on the old standby Oster. I remember growing up with my mom making killer milkshakes in our old Oster, and was surprised when they still sold this model. But then after awhile it dawned on me that perhaps there is a reason why this model has been around so long.
For one thing, how many times does a person need 15 different settings for a blender? to do what? Frappe? Blend? Fold? ... whats the difference? When I use a blender, its mainly to blend something... fast. This Blender does that very well. You get your choice of a full blast that's constant, or you can pulse it with the very handy toggle switch. That's it. The essence of simplicity.
And it works on just about anything. The kids wanted some pineapple shake....not a problem. This thing will make a tough pineapple into a tropical smoothie in a few seconds.
I've had ours for two years now and it shows no signs of wearing down or breaking.
Plus the retro styling is a blast thats a nice reminder of my not so distant past.
We're very happy with this purchase and wouldn't hesitate to buy it again. The price is hard to beat and if you feel that you really do need all those other bells and whistles, go ahead and by the cuisinart or whatever. But I'm all for getting something that does one job and does it very well.
