Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Orka A47221 Ice Pop Molds, White BaseCustomer Review: Best pop mold yet - buying a second set! Kind of small (but that's what I wanted). Summary: 5 Stars
We have tried four different kinds of molds and these are by far the best. The silicone comes right off easily and the shapes come out perfect.
The main criticism I read of these is that they are smaller than others. And that's EXACTLY what I love about them! They are perfect for my elementary age children, who often leave the last bit of a larger store-bought popsicle to melt, and the adults in our house prefer them, too, because you finish the popsicle before it starts melting all over you! Anyway, you're making homemade popsicles so if you like them larger, just make more and eat two. :)
It is true the handle is two pieces, but we haven't really noticed a problem with the drips leaking (again the popsicle is usually finished before the dripping really gets going).
Also, we have used regular wooden popsicle sticks in place of the plastic handles and that has worked just as well; I just set the timer for 20 min. after putting the pops in the freezer and then insert the wooden popsicle sticks so they will stand up in the half-frozen popsicles. (This allows us to make several consecutive batches and put them in a big Ziploc in the fridge instead of being limited to only 4 pops at a time.)
We are actually buying a second set for this summer so we can double the amount we can make at once. I only wish Orka made these in more shapes so we could have some variety!
Customer Review: Makes great popsicles!! Summary: 5 Stars
I love this thing! I have been using it like crazy ever since I got it. I got really tired of trying to find natural popsicles in the store with no added colors, sugar, corn syrup or other additives that are terrible for you. Especially considering the sky high price for organic popsicles. Fruit is so sweet and delicious that you don't need to add anything! I just blend up strawberries, raspberries, blueberries (whatever I have) and pour them into the molds. Sometimes I add a little lemon juice to the strawberries and maybe a tiny bit of vanilla creme stevia if the berries are very tart. They turn out great! My husband loves them too. They are smaller sized popsicles, but I like them just how they are. When you get bigger ones I think they begin melting and you end up wasting it anyway. I have never even had one of these drip into the drip cup (maybe I eat them too fast? :). They are also very easy to remove. The silicone is the main reason I purchased them. It seemed like a great idea to make them easy to pop out and it is. I have never had a problem. Just pull the tab and out they come as beautiful swirly popsicles. And since the mold turns inside out when you remove them it also makes them very easy to clean. I think they look so much better than all of the other molds I looked at and also take up much less room in the freezer. I am very satisfied with my choice and would highly recommed them.
Customer Review: My kid's favorite popsicle molds Summary: 5 Stars
One of my 2 favorite sets (my other favorite is a stainless steel set with bigger molds that I use for the adults Stainless Steel Popsicle Mold). These molds are smaller than most but it's the perfect size for little kids or for portion control. My kids love the twisty shape and bright colors of the molds. I love that they're BPA-free and so easy to use. I don't even need to run them under water to release them, I just grab the tab and pull the mold off to reveal a beautiful shape! It couldn't be easier than that... Another positive point: I found no weird taste left by the silicone molds, which can be an issue with some other silicone molds. Also, I had read in one review that someone was complaining of leaks where the handle meets the little cup and I was worried about that but I'm happy to report that after several use, I couldn't observe any leak at all. Maybe that one buyer got a defective set... To sum it up, an excellent product! You just have to be aware of the smaller size of the molds.
Customer Review: Perfect Pops. Summary: 5 Stars
Love these, I've had these since February. Each one holds about 1/4 c. Just the perfect size for my 2 year old. Work just as easy as it says. (UPDATE MAR-2011) So, I've had these for about a year now. They hold up surprisingly well. Every piece comes apart for easy clean up (bowls from the handles, the actual holder itself). My son is now 3 years old and this mold makes the perfect size for a young child. like I said each one holds about 1/4 cup. I usually just puree some fruit in my mini chopper, or use leftover smoothie, or swirl some yogurt with some fruit puree & put it in a pyrex liquid measuring cup & pour (EASY). Really the variations are endless. Plus it's a much more healthier treat than store bought. Most of the time I don't even add any kind of sweetener so I don't feel bad about letting my child eat one after another. He'll just be getting his fruit servings. It does take longer to freeze (about 4 hrs) but for no hassle pops it's totally worth it.
Customer Review: Good product, but needs some clarification Summary: 4 Stars
The good:
- they're silicon popsicle molds
- hold about a double-shot-glass' worth of liquid (perfect for snacking, or for smaller stomachs)
- they are individual popsicles held in a stand, so you don't have to defrost the whole batch just to eat one
The unexpected/not so good:
- the molds peel off in a way that causes the mold to be inverted, which makes it easy to clean, but does require that you turn them back right side out.
- there isn't anything to indicate the maximum fill level on the interior of the mold.
- the drip catcher is hard to drink out of if you do wind up with drips (if you're an adult.)
Overall, I like them, but they're running second to the Tovolo molds I got at the same time.
