I have done an about face on my original review as new information has come to light.
Satin Garnet Oneida silverware: I still love the really big and heavy design. The original pieces that I bought at Walmart at least 6 years ago (!!!!) are still wonderful, and rust free - even in their Marine environment (I keep them on my sailboat, a recipe for poor quality stainless to rust). NO RUST. NOT even on the knives. This prompted me to buy more for my home, but Walmart no longer carried it so I went to Oneida, and couldn't find 'Garnet', just 'Garnet Satin'. So I ordered a 24 place settings (first 12 from Amazon). The design is slightly different, but it is still lovely! Big, heavy pieces.
But I notice that the knives in my drawer at home are rusting, spotting and generally looking pretty shabby.
Cut to the chase: The knives are magnetic. The other pieces aren't, even the large serving pieces. Stainless of the grade advertised by Oneida is NOT supposed to be magnetic. Truth in advertising? I wrote to them informing them of this issue, and received... nothing in reply! Ergo, they must know about it but prefer to ignore the issue. They are advertising a product as 18/10 stainless that is clearly NOT 18/10.
Stainless quick primer:
18/10 is 18% chromium, 10% nickel. 18/8 is 18% chromium 8% nickel - still good stainless, and considered 300 series. Highly corrosion resistant. You should not see rust on this stainless in kitchen applications. Ever. unless you do stupid things to it like immerse it in salt water for uninterrupted days at a time. There are other grades of stainless that contain significantly less nickel and chromium, and are not as corrosion resistant, AND they are magnetic. They are NOT 18/10 stainless. I suggest that is what the knives in this pattern are made from.
So, bottom line? Oneida is untruthful in their advertising.
