Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Oneida 24-Count Cupcake Carrying CaseCustomer Review: Great, and was able to fix the sagging problem Summary: 4 Stars
When shopping for cupcake carriers, I read about the top shelf sagging down into the frosting of the bottom cupcakes, but thought that wouldn't happen to me since I don't pile frosting high on my cupcakes. Oh, I was wrong. Made a batch of 24 cupcakes and only drizzled a chocolate icing glaze on top. Even with that minimal icing, the top shelf still sagged down into it!
I was able to fix the problem though. I have a Wilton Comfort Grip round cookie cutter that's been cluttering my utensil drawer, so I set it on the bottom shelf (it fits nicely around one of the cupcakes) and it was the PERFECT height. The top shelf couldn't sag down, and yet the cookie cutter wasn't so tall that the top shelf bowed upward either. It made the top shelf perfectly horizontal. This was an easy fix that I had sitting around the house, but still, the sagging shouldn't happen, there should be some sort of reinforcement on the top shelf to handle the weight of the cupcakes. That's why I give it 4 stars instead of 5.
It is a great carrier though, no regrets about buying it. Took it to a neighborhood BBQ and got several compliments on it. =)
**Update**
I've owned this pan less than 3 months, and my husband noticed a crack in the metal of the cupcake tin yesterday as he was drying it off with a towel. When he told me and I went and looked for the crack, it was really hard to see. You certainly can't see it if you're looking down into the pan as it sits on my countertop. I've submitted a product image at the top of the product description page so you can see what the crack looks like.
I only use this cupcake pan for carrying cupcakes.... I've never baked in the pan (I have other pans I use) and it's never been in the dishwasher. Never used a knife on it either. I don't know if it arrived like this or if it happened sometime in the 3 months I've had it. Disappointing quality and if I ever wanted to bake in this tin, it's only possible with the use of paper liners. I'll have to store this pan along with a sticky note to remind me about the crack, so I don't try and make my stuffin' muffins in it! (Cornbread stuffing baked in a muffin pan with a lot of butter... that would be a mess!)
Customer Review: Great for your everyday cupcake Summary: 4 Stars
I was very excited to get this carrier in the mail, as I've gotten somewhat obsessed with baking cupcakes lately. Overall, I think it's great. Easy to use, seals the cakes up well, can be stuck in the fridge (if you have room!) so that they keep longer, etc. However, there are some negative aspects of the product, which is why I've deducted one star. Like others have said, the bottom pan is a real cupcake pan, so once your cakes are decorated and put in there, they're a bear to get out without smudging frosting or getting your hands all goopy. I've tried the advice of others about putting something in the bottom of the cups to raise them just a bit, but then I found that the weight of the cupcakes on top caused the top rack to bow a little and smoosh into the bottom cupcakes. I've opted for goopy hands from now on and removed the "risers" on the bottom, but I'm worried what will happen if I decide to do anything more creative than just smoothing frosting on top. I wish they made one of these carriers that still held 24 cupcakes, but the bottom was a little less of a cupcake pan and more like the top rack. Also, they should put a stabilizer in the middle between the two holders because of that bowing problem with the weight of the cupcakes. But overall, it does it's job and gets my cupcakes places safely! The foil-lined box just wasn't cutting it anymore!
Customer Review: Makes carrying two dozen cupcakes easy Summary: 4 Stars
I've had this product for about a year now and have been thrilled with it. I often bring muffins or cupcakes into work and found this to be challenging since I've never found cupcake pans that come with covers (unlike 9x13 inch pans which are pretty easy to find with covers). I had tried using tupperware containers but often the cupcakes were too high and smudged or got damaged because they didn't fit snuggly. Overall this product has remedied all these problems for me. I like that the bottom pan can actually be used for baking. I often choose to use another pan because I have others I like better but overall it's a better than average pan. The nonstick surface is great and it is not made of dark metal so it does not cause muffins or cupcakes to brown too quickly. I haven't had the problems other reviewers mentioned with smudging. However, most of the muffins I make are frosting-free and my cupcakes typically only have a simple layer of frosting (not high) with few extra embellishments. Overall I would definitely recommend this. It's a little bit sizeable and bulky so I had a hard time figuring out where to store it in a small apartment kitchen. However, it's quite sturdy and easily transports my cupcakes to and from their destination without damage.
Customer Review: Clips are flimsy Summary: 3 Stars
I purchased this cupcake carrying case a couple of years ago and have maybe used it 4 or 5 times. I agree that while it is nice to be able to bake the cupcakes in the bottom, I bought it to use as a carrier only. The bottom really IS too deep and once the cupcakes are frosted, they are hard to remove. After about 3 uses, one of the black clips on the side particially broke and today, after my daughter took cupcakes to school, it totally broke (just based on regular "open and close" usage. So now you can't hinge the one side. Since I purchased this, I realized that 24 cupcakes is not enough for my child's classrooms anyway. I've tossed the top rack and broken cover (kept the bottom to bake in) and will order the 3 level carrier that gets such great reviews. This carrier is ok if you don't mind smudging your cupcakes when removing them from the bottom layer; if you only want a carrier that holds 24 cupcakes; or you aren't concerned about the flimsy clips on the sides.
Customer Review: Serious design flaws... Summary: 1 Stars
I was given this as a Christmas present and was initially quite excited. I like to make cupcakes for my office and for my son's daycare. I'm really disappointed with this product, however. First of all, the spacing between the two tiers is very, very narrow, causing the lower tier to become smooshed - all frosting smeared and if you have any sort of height and/or topping, decorative add-on, etc, it's going to get ruined. Secondly, the plastic second layer - the black upper level shown in the photo - is very weak and bows considerably under the weight of 12 cupcakes, which only adds to the smooshing in of the lower level. (Sadly, this plastic tray even looks bowed on the photo on the box!) I hate returning gifts, especially those that I'm so excited to have, but this is useless. Whoever engineered it did not think things through.
