Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of OneTouch Jar Opener

Customer Review: Not worth the expense
Summary: 1 Stars

I purchased one of these at Walmart. It has trouble with large cans, and although a side cutter, it leaves a razor sharp edge as it cuts under the lid's bead. This also makes it hard to put the top back on the can to use as a 'lid'.

I wound up purchasing a Hamilton Beach electric side cutter that cuts through the middle of the bead. Much better than this one. The one I have is an all white version of this unit - Hamilton Beach 76606Z Smooth Touch Can Opener, Black and Chrome

Customer Review: It Doesn't "Jam", It Breaks!
Summary: 2 Stars

Well, we've used the OneTouch device a few times on tough jar lids and it worked okay. After the lid is opened, however, the devise sometimes would restart and we had to allow it to run down. Today (03/08/2009) we tried to open a pickled beets jar. We have opened previous jars of pickled beets by hand but this one was tough. The device cranked and cranked and then snapped! The plastic grip portion of the device broke. If the device was supposed to "jam", as indicated in the user manual, it simply didn't stop - it broke. Wouldn't you know, the OneTouch website is no longer active.

Customer Review: Center carefully on the jar lid
Summary: 4 Stars

I am buying my third One Touch Jar Opener. I have arthritis and I consider this a kitchen necessity, although I have had two that broke. I consider the breakage my fault, as I did not take the trouble to be sure the opener was exactly centered on the jar lid, so it could not get an even grip on the jar before it started turning. This gave uneven leverage and one of the grips broke, the same both times. Stronger plastic might be the answer, but I still think it is worth the price. Each opened many jars successfully.

Customer Review: Wonderful at first
Summary: 3 Stars

I LOVED this when I first got it. I have arthritis in my hands, so this was a godsend. However, it is slow and noisy. It slowly "cranks" itself closed on the jar and then turns the lid, and then slowly cranks itself open. I'd like it better if one could manually adjust it to the size of the lid before turning it on. Sometimes the door for the battery case would pop open and it would stop. Then it suddenly broke. Big disappointment. Now I'm going with an under-cabinet jar opener until this one has been improved.

Customer Review: 1 year and the end of functionallity
Summary: 2 Stars

I have now owned 2 of these. My wife cannot open cans very well so this is almost a medical necessity. This is a great item IF you approach it from the 1 year and it breaks mind set. Both of them we have owned lasted 1 year and a few days...don't call for warranty assist, it won't happen. I understand though, 1 year is 1 year.

I give it a 1 star for quality workmanship. I give it 3 stars for function. It does what it is supposed to do, open cans. That is what equates to the 2 star rating.
