Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of OneTouch Can Opener

Customer Review: The Greatest fpr arthrritic hands
Summary: 5 Stars

This can opener had good details on the package to let me know what I was buying and by looking at and reading the package information felt confident this was a product I could use. Other than electric can openers I had trouble using can openers as I have arthirits and they do not make the electric one. This can opener is so easy to use and does all that the advertisement says it will. Just put it on the can and it does the rest. I have had one for some time and ordered two more as did not want to ever be with out one and they are hard to find, fact is, nearly impossibe to find in a store. I bought one for my sister and my daughter who has MS. Just cannot say enough good things about this product and hope it is never taken off the market. It is nearly indestrutable as tried it on a pull top, for which it was not intended, and even though it hung up, was able to get it off and it is still running as smoothly as when new. It is so easy to use and does not take a rocket scientist to put in batteries and then to put it to use. I have not used any other since purchising mine and it is still going like new.
Thank you so much who ever invented this.

Customer Review: Neat, but not perfect
Summary: 3 Stars

This can opener is a neat litle gadget. I have been pleased with its ability to open cans. It's a little slower, but I have had success opening every size can, from very small to very large and everything in between. I have been using mine for over six months.

However, I have found two down-sides. Often the blade doesn't quite make it all the way around the can, and after it stops and I lift the lid, I have to twist and pull the lid off because it is left dangling by one small but surprisingly strong thread. This usually happens only with the larger cans. More importantly, it is absolutely NOT true that there are no sharp edges. No sharp edges are left on the lid, but the can itself is left as sharp as a blade.

If you are aware of that sharp edge and know to avoid it, this is a neat little thing to have handy in the drawer. At the very least, keep one on hand in case you have a conventional opener that breaks.

[Update 10/09/08: My mother's can opener jammed with no warning when the batteries died. I am proactively changing my batteries every 3 months.]

Customer Review: A Great Product!
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this item at a home products store because I had heard about it but never seen one. I am a stroke survivor with the use of only one hand so even the usual powered can opener is extremely difficult for me to use. This product however is great. Simply put the can to be opened on a flat surface, put the opener on the top of the can making sure to seat the turning gear next to the flanged edge of the can and push the one touch button. The opener turns itself through 360 degrees on the can lid separating the lid from the edge of the can without any sharp edges. The magnet on the opener allows the can lid to be lifted off with the opener. My first opener disappeared during a move so I promptly replaced it . Both units have operated flawlessly and have never met a food can they couldn't open. The only problem I have had is opening the battery compartment to change the batteries since I have the use of only one hand. Since the opener shuts itself off after making it's 360 degree journey around the top of the can quality batteries last several months so this is not that big a deal

Customer Review: balancing the negative reviews
Summary: 5 Stars

I have never written a review of a product before but, since I'm planning to purchase the OneTouch for a friend and after reading all the negative reviews, I wanted to provide some balance. My sister gave me this can opener last December as she had two of them. It opens cans and gives me a chuckle every time I use it as it vibrates itself around the top of the can. It does leave a sharp edge around the top of the can just as any other type of can opener leaves a sharp-edged lid. One just has to be careful since it's sort of a no-brainer that cutting a lid off a metal can will give you sharp edges in one way or another. I've had no problem with batteries, in fact, I've not replaced them since I got the opener last December. A note here, however, is that I don't open a lot of cans (probably one or two a week) as I don't eat much canned food. This can opener is small and fits conveniently in a drawer, requires no use of sensitive fingers or wrists, and, for me, works very efficiently. I hope this review helps others make a decision about whether or not to purchase.

Customer Review: Quit Working After a Few Months
Summary: 2 Stars

I received this as a Christmas present and was really excited to try it out. At first it worked ok but after a few months of use, I am going back to my tried and true manual can opener.

This can opener worked ok at first. You position it on top of the can and push a button on top. It moves around the top of the can and stops after it is opened. The things that I did not like about it were that it cuts on the side of the can just under the rim, depending on the thickness of the can, it can leave quite a sharp edge. It also cuts the top of the label into little slivers that fall into the food in the can.

After a few months of use, it just isn't working like it did at first. It will start to move around the can but then stops, I've changed the batteries but it continues to do the same thing. It is a nightmare to try and get the opener off the can when it is locked on and the opener won't operate.

I'm just going to use my manual can opener, it isn't that much harder to use and fits nicely into a drawer also.
