Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of OneTouch Can Opener

Customer Review: I loved it but then it died
Summary: 2 Stars

I got this can open for my birthday last May 2009. Some flipping exciting birthday huh? I used to get jewelry or a weekend getaway, now I get a can opener?

It is difficult for me to use a manual can opener, and regular electric ones are fine except you have to have your hand on the can or else at the end it will drop and splash. This One Touch was great because you didn't have to baby-sit it. You start it, go back to cooking, and pick up the opened can when you are ready. It looked cool too how it would take charge and open the can. The battery life was OK, they lasted about two months, but I only open about 7 cans or less a week.

Then in Nov. 2009, less than 6 months later, the can opener froze on a can. It was nearly impossible to get it off, even with a little thing you are supposed to be able to turn with a screw driver (cheap plastic just stripped the screw), finally I got the can off by twisting the whole thing and hurting my hand. After that it never worked again. I thought it froze because the batteries went dead, but when I tested them they were still strong (my battery tester is accurate.)

And that is the sad story of my can opener... I think what I liked the most was that it was small enough to stick in a drawer, pull out and use, and stick back out of site. Too bad it was such junk.

Customer Review: Don't Let Batteries Run Down!
Summary: 1 Stars

This opener opens the can by cutting the can on the side rather than the top. It's handy to have in your utensil drawer to impress your guests with because it will walk magically around the can and produce a safe lid but a wicked can. It has a serious flaw that I can't live with. If you place the opener on a can and the batteries go dead - which they seem to do very often, the opener will stop and can't be removed from the can without the aid of a phillips screwdriver since the battery compartment is between the can and the opener. Taking the opener off with a screwdriver requires more strength and many more turns than I can give with my Arthritis. The screw you must turn is on the underside of the opener which means you must also hold the can above your head and put up with drips from a partially opened can or turn it blindly while held over the edge of the counter. I'd much rather have a manual opener. Last time it hung on me I just threw everything away, the can, and its contents with the opener still attached. Do NOT let your batteries get weak if you opt to purchase this thing. Seems like the two AA alkaline batteries lasted me for around 5 can openings. Because of this I put in two rechargeable NiMH AAs last time and they only lasted for 2 openings.

Customer Review: Love it, but now it's stuck to a can!
Summary: 3 Stars

I have used this can opener for over a year, and I only remember changing the batteries twice, so "using too many batteries" was not an issue. Maybe not changing them often enough was my problem! I used it approx. 3 to 8 times a week. It's been wonderful, as my arthritic hands now have trouble with the hand opener I've used all my life.
Yesterday, the battery died about 1/4-way around the top, and wouldn't budge. Pressing re-set buttons didn't work because the battery was dead, and as another reviewer mentioned, when it's stuck to a can, you can't access the battery compartment to change the batteries!! I called customer service, and was directed to unscrew the black screw on the right side of the cutter. Easier said than done! A screwdriver is hard to turn, since the stuck can is in the way! Got my little electric screwdriver, and promptly stripped the screw. Called customer service back, and was apologetically told that this was my only option.
Oh, well, it was nice while it lasted, and it worked well for me, but I'm disappointed in its demise, which is why I'm only giving it 3 stars.
I will order another one, since I found it to work perfectly for me, and will be sure to check battery power (though I'm not sure HOW!) before using!

Customer Review: Downright Clever Device
Summary: 4 Stars

I don't normally go for these "As seen on TV" products, but this one surprised me. It lives up to the hype and is fascinating to watch. It sort of "wags" its tail as it spins around the top of the can being opened.

The picture is misleading. You don't hold on to it. You just put it on top of the can, push the button, and step back and watch. It spins around the top of the can and cuts the top right off. There's a magnet in it that lifts the lid off the can after it is opened.

The design of this device makes it ideal for people with arthritis. If you can push a button, this can opener will get it done.

Another nice thing about it is that it cuts from the outside of the can and doesn't get messy. There is nothing to clean up!

The only downside is that it doesn't detect when it has completed its cycle. It just runs for 20 secs and quits. Since I was used to automatic cutoff when the can was completely open, that caught me off guard and I thougth I needed to turn it off manually. It didn't take long to figure out what was happening. You just sit back till it finishes doing its thing.

The one I bought also came with a "...but wait, if you order now you also get ..." nifty jar opener that really works.

Customer Review: Interesting idea, poor execution
Summary: 1 Stars

Mine did work for a while. But the first thing I noticed is that it DOES leave a sharp edge, only instead of the lid that comes off being sharp it's the edge of the can that remains sharp. Well, that seems worse to me because I'm going to throw the lid away but I may be working with the can for a while. Furthermore, there's no reinforcing ridge left on the can to keep it round. So the walls of the can are left very flimsy. And if you open a coffee can with it, there's no ridge left to keep the plastic resealing lid on the can. So I actually had to buy a regular hand-powered can opener for things with resealable lids like coffee. And it's slow - like I could open things equally fast with the manual opener. That isn't a dealbreaker, but when you're doing several cans and it takes forever to do open each one, it does get annoying.

So then one day, mercifully, it stopped working. Luckily, it wasn't in the middle of opening a can at time (after reading some of the other problems people had!). Replacing the batteries didn't help. So now it's in can-opener heaven (or hell?), and I am just using the manual opener with better results.
