Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Old Stone Oven 4467 14-Inch by 16-Inch Baking Stone

Customer Review: decent pizza stone, but way over priced
Summary: 2 Stars

One of my friends got one of these pizza stones and I went over to make pizza with him, and what amazed me was that this looks and feels JUST like a unglazed tile... I had great fun making pizza with him, and the pizza came out great, but I couldn't justify spending this much $$$ on a pizza stone...

I ended up going to Home Depot and picked up a 12" unglazed tile for 83 cents (as suggested by Alton Brown from Good Eats), and it fits perfectly in my oven. I have been making pizza with it and see no difference between the two pizza stones.

If you have needs to make larger pizzas that won't fit on a cheap 12" tile, then _maybe_ you can get this one (14"X16"). Personally, I'd just get it from Home Depot.

Customer Review: Three years and no problems
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought(2)of these in 2005 for ten dollars less each here at amazon. It was a good price then. Too bad it has gone up so much. Nevertheless, I believe they are great for pizza and bread. I have always left them in the oven and take them out to scrape them clean on occasion. I figure they are heat cleaned. I tried the unglazed tile (home depot) in a pan years ago but they did not create a crisp crust. They do not absorb moisture which is why they can be used outside in cold climates..not brutal, but cold. In addition, they are not not for eating off of. Maybe it does not matter but I would not assume they are safe. These stones from Old Stone are great and make a great pizza at 500 deg. and preheated for almost one hour.

Customer Review: Great stone
Summary: 5 Stars

I chose this Old Stone Oven because of Cook's Illustrated recommendation and because my 10-year-old, extremely used Pampered Chef stone finally broke. This stone is *much* heavier than my old one, and I love the rectangular shape because it gives more leeway in actually getting the pizza on it in a 500 degree oven. I've had a lot of edges hang over and spill with a round stone. My crust turns out as good, if not better, than with my old stone. Amazon's price is excellent compared to other places for the same model. Also, it came packaged *extremely* well with layers of packing and it was even double-boxed. It seems Amazon finally addressed the problem of customers receiving broken stones.

Customer Review: Poorly packed. Arrived broken. Twice!
Summary: 1 Stars

I ordered this baking stone from Amazon because the price was good and the shipping was free. It arrived in just a few days. Great. However, when I opened the box I found it was broken. So I returned it through UPS which was how it came. Cost me $11.00. They sent another one in about a weeks time. Guess what? Yeah. Broken too! Now it's too late for a replacement before Christmas so I returned this one too with a request for a refund. Cost me another $11.00 shipping. I was credited for the price of the stone shortly afterwards but they still haven't reimbursed me for the UPS shipping charges. Don't bother ordering this item unless you're prepared for a great deal of aggravation.

Customer Review: Amazing Results!
Summary: 5 Stars

I selected this stone after America's Test Kitchen rated it #1. It's fantastic! My pizzas and french bread are gourmet good! Read the directions carefully when you receive it. Messy chef that I am, I let the cheese melt onto the stone (never a good idea with these stones). I used a copper scouring pad and warm water to clean it and it turned-out fine. Like previous reviews have stated, it will blacken/discolor... just let it be. My pizza's cook perfectly at 450 degrees. I do let the stone pre-heat for about 30 minutes. Pizza cooks mighty fast at that well-preheted temperature so keep an eye on it. The size is perfect. I wouldn't buy a smaller one. Enjoy!
