Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Old Stone Oven 4467 14-Inch by 16-Inch Baking StoneCustomer Review: Excellent Thick Baking Stone Summary: 4 Stars
My stone arrived triple boxed, surrounded in multiple layers of bubble wrap & packing peanuts. It was in excellent condition.
The actual stone is about 1/2" thick, with several feet to raise it off the floor of my oven. I set the stone directly on the bottom of my gas oven at all times, and it really does help maintain the temperature when baking in general. My preheat times are a very reasonable extra 10 minutes, and my oven cycles on much less often with the warm stone.
My first bread did get a bit burnt on the bottom, but the it was still good. The recipe I was following wasn't for using a stone, so it needs to be adjusted. The stone is now nicely blackened, which is good for the stone. If it gets dirty, I plan to just turn the oven on to 500 degrees for 30 minutes and burn off any of the contaminates. No need to really wash it with soap or anything. Just the occasional wipe down and rinse.
Customer Review: Old Stone Baking Oven Summary: 5 Stars
First I have to say that I haven't used this stone yet (it just arrived late yesterday On a cold Minnesota day). Secondly I didn't purchase it from Amazon ~ for some reason didn't think to look there. It's in a baking catalog I receive. I've wanted to try it for a long time so finally ordered it. It didn't arrive with the other items I had ordered but a few days later from another supplier. It was well packaged, the box with the stone had corrugated cardboard bracing along the sides and bottom and the stone was very secure. This was placed inside another box surrounded with styrofoam peanuts and as everyone has said the inner box was marked fragile but NOT the shipping box. I'm thinking this is the fault of the supplier or manufacturer and not Amazon. Anyway after reading the reviews I feel fortunate that my stone arrived in one piece and I'm looking forward to using it
Customer Review: Extremely pleased! Summary: 5 Stars
I love to bake bread, and had long wanted a stone large enough to easily bake two loaves. I'd had one of those small, round 'pizza' stones that I used nearly 20 years before it cracked in half, but it would barely hold a single loaf of bread (was great for pizza, though).
I also have a small kiln that needs to sit on a piece of firebrick when in use.
My solution was to get THIS! It's large enough to solve BOTH of my needs, and I only had to buy one item. The top has a nice, fine finish to it and I've already used it to make pizza, and it's a perfect fit for my 36" range oven. The bottom has several shallow 'feet', and these don't interfere with sitting on an oven grate. The feet are ever-so-slightly unlevel, but even when I use it beneath my little kiln (requires setting the baking stone on the floor), it isn't an issue.
Customer Review: Horrible packaging - 2 different shipments arrived totally broken! Summary: 1 Stars
When I saw the review titled arrived broken, twice I thought to myself I must have already reviewed this. Silly me - I'm not as forgetful as I thought I must be! I ordered one of these and it arrived in pieces. There was no damage to the package, just a totally shattered pizza stone. The package was shipped in the original packaging, but Amazon should have cushioned it and then put it into another box seeing as how many people have gotten theirs in pieces. I asked Amazon for a replacement, which they sent right away, and that one was in even worse shape than the first (also with an undamaged package, indicating that the cushioning/packaging is totally insufficient for this product). On the plus side, sending it back to Amazon was free, as I printed out the postage paid return slips and just gave them both back to my postal carrier.
Customer Review: THE BEST HOME PIZZA YET! Summary: 5 Stars
I've prided myself on my homemade pizza for years. It's something I take very seriously no matter if I am making my dough from scratch, or if time doesn't permit, using pre-made refridgerated dough. Now I've used all sorts of pizza pans to bake my pies from the round aluminum sheets, to the large round sheets with the holes in them, to the rectangular pans that pizzerias use for deep dish pizza. Bottom line is that none of them gave as true a pizzeria taste as this baking stone. What's more is that stone allows you to cook at hotter temperatures as my older oven always cooked faster on the bottom and I'd have to adjust the rack heighth. The stone allows for much more even cooking and provides a true gourmet tasting crust. I'll never go back to aluminum pans again. Great item and great value as well.
