Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Old Stone Oven 4467 14-Inch by 16-Inch Baking Stone

Customer Review: The Art of Pizza making.
Summary: 5 Stars

I have owned this pizza stone for over a year now and find it to work perfectly. It is heavy and very dense. The ceramic nature of the stone will stain and absorb anything that is baked into it. I only use it with parchment paper and it works perfectly. The dough I make is very limp and therefore requires using a pizza peel to slide the pizza in and out of the oven. Use the highest temperature available on your oven. Some may go as high as 600 degrees mine only reaches 500 degrees and the pizza's cook in about 5 to 8 minutes. You can bake whatever you want but remember this is a pizza stone. You can use it for artisan breads but nothing else that requires long baking times. The first sample arrived broken. Amazon took care of the return shipping and shipped out a new one immediately. It was not surprising as the stone is quite heavy and shippers are not always careful. This stone is for the average homeowner who wants to bake a pizza that is every bit as good as the finest pizza's made anywhere. It will fit in most oven's and the results are as good as from a wood fire brick pizza oven. I use Peter Reinharts Pizza dough recipe and I use San Marzano whole peeled DOP certified tomatoes to make my pizza sauce. Care and quality of ingredients will help to make the best pizza possible. That's Amore!!!

Customer Review: It arrived broken
Summary: 1 Stars

Yes, I also ignored the warning of the other reviewers who wrote in to complain that their stone arrived broken.
My stone also arrived broken!!! :-(
I'm not sure who I am more annoyed with. Myself or Amazon.
I spoke with an Amazon Rep who assured me that the damage issue has been resolved and that they were
packing these items more carefully to avoid damage.
Sorry, but any High School physics student could look at the packing and tell you that it is woefully inadequate for the weight and fragility of this item.
If this is their idea of an improvement, I can't even imagine how poorly packed it was before.
The item is packed in a box that only supports the outside edges of the stone and provides virtually NO SUPPORT underneath or above the stone to keep it from shifting inside the box. Thus, it breaks...
They do a miserable job of packing this item for shipping. Maybe their next idea of improvement will be
to put small rocks in the box.

Amazon is going to have to do some serious groveling to resolve this issue for me.
My recommendation, do not buy this stone. It is very fragile and Amazon does an atrocious job of
protecting the item for shipping.

Customer Review: a must for any serious baker
Summary: 4 Stars

I'm awful at New Years Resolutions- not the keeping of them, which I do an okay job of, but figuring out just what to resolve to do- so I start thinking about it in July. Not only is it obsessive, but it's a bit counter productive. I may come up with a great New Years Resolution, but if something is good enough for January 1, why not start in August or September?

That's what happened here. I resolved to never buy another loaf of store bought bread- and I haven't since the beginning of September. I've been using the James Beard bread book and Artisan bread in 5 Minutes a Day. These are both Must Own books for anyone that spends time in the kitchen.

The stone was a gift, and one I am incredibly grateful for. I've been cooking peasant loafs, and you don't get the same results in either crumb or crust, using a baking sheet. The crumb is softer and more consistent and the crust is more even, using the stone.

I use my stone at least twice a week, and it holds up well. Cleaning is easy, but it does discolor very quickly, and there's no getting it back to pristine, so don't even bother trying.

If you're serious about baking, or pizza, pick this up.

Customer Review: Terrible Customer Service and Item Broken
Summary: 1 Stars

Terrible experience with The Wire Whisk. Ordered item on December 15th and paid $24 for "expedited" shipping. On December 19th I had not received any notification that it had been shipped so I emailed The Wire Whisk. They emailed me back to say they had "misplaced" the order and were sending it out the next day (December 20th) and that I "should" have it the next day (December 21st). I needed it before December 22nd. But they shipped it via UPS 2 Day Air which meant that it would NOT get to me on the 21st. So I emailed them to request they ship it via Next Day Air. I got no response to that email. I them emailed them to request a refund of the shipping charges since I had paid for "expedited" shipping and THEIR mistake meant I did not get it in time. I got no response to that email either.

I finally got the package this morning (December 26th) and it the stone was broken into 2 pieces!!!!!! The packaging was terrible and totally inadequate to protect the stone. From reading other reviews it seems this is a common problem. So why don't they fix this? I am now attempting to get a full refund.

Would recommend avoiding this vendor.

Customer Review: Great, Affordable Pizza Stone
Summary: 5 Stars

My friend brought over one of these and the epicurean peel Epicurean Cutting Surfaces 23-by-14-Inch Pizza Peel, Natural to make pizza for us and I noticed right away how much heavier this stone was than the two I had.

I would like one slightly larger, but I think I have a pretty big oven, so I understand having more commons size available.

With the less massive stones, I had to precook my crust for a few minutes before putting toppings on. With this one, I prep my pizza on parchment, Put it on the peel (after toppings so it doesn't stick to the peel) slip it on the stone (heated to 550 deg for 30 minutes minimum). take out the parchment after 2-4 min and cook the pizza for the remaining 6 to 4 min (8 min total) and boom. great fresh pizza.

I use trader joes herb dough usually because I am pretty lazy :)
