Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of OXO SteeL Garlic Press, StainlessCustomer Review: major design flaw Summary: 3 Stars
As far as pressing garlic goes, this item cannot be beat. I've tried the ones from Kuhn Rikon, Rosle, and Zyliss; they don't come close to ease of use.
However, I can't understand why Oxo didn't design the handles in a single piece rather than slipping on a second external layer. Water seeps in when cleaning, and getting the external handle casings off in order to drain it is both difficult and annoying.
I had given this item five stars at first; now that I've had it for a while, the design flaw is irritating enough to warrant a downgrade in rating.
Customer Review: A Little Disappointed Summary: 3 Stars
I purchased the Oxo based on the many positive reviews. The heft/weight of this unit is very helpful when pressing un-peeled garlic - however.....The construction tolerances are such that an over abundant amount of garlic squeezes out the sides and is lost. I found similar results from the Kuhn-Rikon unit too (see my review). Overall, the best garlic press I've found in the Zyliss unit for shear efficiency and the amount of actual garlic moved through the press and useable for cooking. The Oxo unit is average, Kuhn-Rikon poor, and the Zyliss about the best available.
Customer Review: The best!!! Summary: 5 Stars
Have wanted a garlic press for quite a while but never bought one for fear of getting a dud. After reading reviews of this one I finally caved and bought it. I could not be happier! This product has completed my kitchen utensil wish list. Even my mom is impressed with the ease & comfort of this garlic press. I can remember growing up listening to my mom and grandma discuss the importance of a good garlic press. Felt so good to whip this wonderful product out when my mom came to visit. She wants one now! ;) The price couldn't have been better either.
Customer Review: Easy To Squeeze Summary: 4 Stars
I bought this to replace my Pampered Chef press. That utensil came with a separate component to push the garlic off the end of the press and to push out the leftover. I bought this press because I love all things Oxo, and I loved that the tool to push out the rest was built in. However, I miss that I don't have something to wipe the garlic off after it presses through and end up grabbing a butter knife to do it. On the up side, it's super easy to squeeze and is very effective at mincing garlic. That point makes up for having to grab a butter knife.
Customer Review: Awesome! Summary: 5 Stars
I figured, based on the size and shape of the handles (and price), that this was a dark-side Oxo product (they seem to flip between crappy and brilliant). Wrong! This thing is a weapon -- the handles have to be solid (the weight is the proof). I love this thing. I'm pretty sure that it is quite impossible for this to store or leak water in any way. Cleanup is no worse or better than any other garlic press, folks. The low ratings and negative comments are definitely for one of the OTHER Oxo garlic presses on Amazon (there are several).
