Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of OXO SteeL Garlic Press, StainlessCustomer Review: Great for garlic, but it has a flaw that disappoints... Summary: 3 Stars
As a garlic press, this thing excels. It is shiny, and nice in the hands, but it also has a problem...
The handles don't stay attached all that well, they sort of slide off sometimes. I'll post a picture.
In use, this is not much of a problem, as I can just push them back on, but in the dishwasher, the poor fit means that the handles tend to fill up with water, which then drains out once the press is in the utensil drawer (which is not ideal). So, I always have to slide the handles off a bit to let the water out, which I'm sure will eventually make the problem even worse. It's not a fatal flaw, but it is really quite annoying.
So, it's almost great, but not quite. My old garlic press was a chore to clean so we didn't use it much, but since we got this, we are easily using 2-3 times as much garlic each week, which I count as a good thing.
Customer Review: BUY IT NOW Summary: 5 Stars
Ohh Why ohh Why did I not buy this years ago. Worth every last penny. I helps to cut my cooking time, in addition to allowing to have my fingers not smell like garlic from chopping and dicing. Buying this for everyone this years. This is a HomeRun!!!!
Update
This is in constant use in my house. As my life has become busier 2 small children now. I have become more and more inlove with this press I have no time to manually chop garlic. If it wasn't for this I would be using tht store bought garlic in a jar which I hate, just does not have the same flavor to me. This press is also easy to clean.
This product while is still excellent for my needs, may not be good for a real chef. I have noticed that as you press the garlic some of the garlic juices comes out. While that does not bother me it may bother some, so that is something to think about.
Customer Review: Awesome Summary: 5 Stars
I broke my last garlic press (Good Grips) a few weeks back. Not wanting to be buying a new garlic press every couple years, I set out to find one that was made like a tank. I settled on this one because of the excellent reviews and because I like stainless steel kitchen tools. (Stainless steel also has the wonderful affect of neutralizing garlic oil which produces the odor that can be quite strong on ones hands after touching it. You can rub the exterior of this press on your fingers under cold water and elliminate any residual odor!) I've used it a half dozen times in the past few weeks and have to say it is a finely made tool. I love things that are made solidly and to last, as well as things that do their intended purpose flawlessly. This press is exactly that tool, and like my Cutco knives, it gives me a little bit of happiness every time I use it.
Customer Review: Serious Garlic Crushing Summary: 5 Stars
While shopping and searching and reviewing garlic crushers I came upon this one. The "Mr. Steely" review and the unhealthy relationship line got both my and my mother's attention! I am a home chef type and I hated my old round hard to clean crusher. This one is heavy! It got showed off to all the holiday company. Oxo could put together a video of how to use it for self-defense purposes should someone break in to your home. Performance wise, I am completely satisfied. I peel all of my garlic before crushing. I use a plastic knife to srape off the garlic and onto the food so I don't scratch it. The pulpy refuse comes out easy and Crushy is cleaned in a special cup by hand and alowed to air dry. We've used this almost everyday since it arrived. You will love it too. And yes, I have developed an unhealthy relationship with it as well.
Customer Review: Hefty time-cutter! Summary: 5 Stars
I LOVE this garlic press! I bought it based on the reviews here and I am so glad that I did. I had previously purchased a Kuhn Rikon and it was near impossible for me to smash a clove of garlic; I had to ask my boyfriend to help. I also had a no name one that wasn't bad, but I thought maybe I was missing something when people raved about having a garlic press. I have a hard time mincing garlic with a knife, so I thought I would give this one a try even though the Zyliss had higher ratings on America's Test Kitchen. It really is very sturdy and since it has such a wide opening you can smash 2-3 cloves at a time. You barely have to exert much pressure and it cleans up pretty easily. I will probably have this one the rest of my life because it is so well made. I am very thrilled with this purchase!
