Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of OXO SteeL Garlic Press, StainlessCustomer Review: built to last Summary: 4 Stars
This makes the ole garlic squish a breeze. The heft and design make it quite easy to get a lot of garlic squished very rapidly. A must for cooking that asks for quantities of garlic (Asian, Mediterranean, etc). I am only able to use one hand due to a nerve injury, even with that limitation I can use this press without a problem.
A few imperfections do not make it a bad product but just as a heads up:
There is a spot deep in the well that some garlic bits will get stuck in. Usually it is the most fibrous bits you do not want anyway. That said, when crushing lots - after 3 to 5 presses you'll have to clean that well out before progressing. Toothpick or knife tip works fine to remove the mush once you reverse the press like designed to get the remains loose.
The basket is a bit tight, but not small. So elephant or very large cloves will still have to be hand or cleaver squished, the normal stuff fits fine.
So no biggie in the way of cons, the pros quite outweigh them.
Customer Review: As an Update - Again Summary: 5 Stars
Elwood is right about the minor flaw of the handle sliding. However, I don't put it in the dish washer (which I don't do with most kitchen items). But other than that, this item works great. the heavy large handles make pressing garlic a breeze. And best of all, it is easy to clean with a reverse flip of the handles and running water. We have had it eight months and easily put 4-5 heads through it a week.
As a follow up. the handles are getting worse. I now just slide them off and let it air dry for 10-15 minutes then put it away. I am planning on contacting the manufaturer to see if there is any work around. If there isn't, as much as we use it, I will probably replace it and I will come back and lower my rating.
As an Update - Again
I contacted Oxo and asked them if they had a work around for the handles such filling the handles with epoxy and it had been over a year since I bought it. Well they replied that they were sorry and I just got a new one in the mail. I really like this company.
Customer Review: Best Garlic Press Summary: 5 Stars
This Oxo Stainless Steel Garlic Press is just the best press I've ever used. There may be others that are superior but I have never used them. I've managed to damage or break every garlic press we've ever owned which is why I went searching for a really sturdy one. After browsing the selection on Amazon.com I decided to get the Oxo as it looked to be the most sturdy at a tolerable price point. I must admit it was one of my better decisions on kitchen tools.
It's not 100% anti-me as I've successfully managed to break off 4 of the plastic teeth on the built-in cleaning/clearing pad. the metal parts however show absolutely no sign of wear, stress or fatigue. I pressed some garlic this morning for a spread and it works as well as the day it arrived. To me this means quality. It continues to function and function well, as advertised and shows no signs of giving out now or any time in the future. If for some reason which I can't think of this would ever break I would buy another one without hesitation.
Customer Review: They just don't make 'em like they used to... HOW NICE! Summary: 5 Stars
This is the best garlic press I have ever seen for any price, ever. Fresh garlic makes such a huge difference. I've gone through about five different presses, and all of them had something I didn't like... except this one!
The cleaner is attached so that it won't get lost. This thing is built like a tank.
I never peel my garlic first. I just toss it in, give it a squeeze, then rotate the handle around to pull out the peel. Rinse it right when you use it, and you'll never have to run it through the dishwasher.
I bought this about a year ago when I lost my previous press. My mother-in-law (who has carpel tunnel syndrome) used it, fell in love with it, and bought her own. Now, I'm buying one as a gift for a friend that thinks cooking with fresh garlic is a pain - he's in for a surprise.
This is hands down the easiest to clean, toughest, and best built garlic press on the market. Way to go OXO!
Customer Review: Looks great, works fine. Summary: 4 Stars
This thing definitely has great heft - it feels like it will last forever. It looks beautiful. The rubberized grip feels comfortable. It won't break in the dishwasher. And yes, it will process garlic.
So why only 4 stars? I find the handles to be TOO SHORT. Another 1/2 inch would have made a world of difference to increase the torque you can generate. The hopper is a bit small, holding only 2 cloves of garlic at a time.
I don't understand people who complain about cleanup. It takes me about 5 seconds to get the chunks out before tossing into the dishwasher. One or two rams of the rubber device dislodges the chunks. A 2 second rinse under the faucet and its 95% clean, and the dishwasher handles the rest.
Since I'm a bit of a perfectionist I am upgrading the the very, very highly rated Kuhn Rikon Epicurean Garlic Press. Yes, its $40. No, you don't really need. I just want it.
