Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of OXO SteeL Garlic Press, Stainless

Customer Review: Presses Garlic Like a Champ
Summary: 5 Stars

I've owned my press for over a year and I have never been disappointed with it. I recommend it without hesitation.

PROS:

It is quite hefty, which means it can stand up to the rigors of pressing cloves.

The stainless steel removes garlic odors from your hands. Just rub your hands over the steel parts of the press when rinsing up with water and all of the garlic smell disappears. This alone makes the press worth while.

Easy to clean. The pulp comes through the holes and the left over bits stay behind in the chamber. Flip the press over and the black plastic clears the holes. Lays flat in the dishwasher for good cleaning coverage.

It seems to be well constructed and should last for years.

CONS:

The chamber can only hold 2 largish cloves, so if you have a lot of garlic to press you'll have to do it in batches, cleaning out the leftovers between presses.

If you have small hands you may find you have to do a two handed press as the handles are large. The extra weight, which benefits pressing, may be hard on some.

All in all this is one piece of equipment that works every time without worries. It should last quite a while.

Customer Review: Best garlic press ever!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

My husband and I are both garlic lovers, and I prefer to use fresh garlic rather than jarred. Presses I have had in the past had the circular press that went into the receptacle to press the cloves. Half of the cloves would usually squish around the press and I had to keep putting it back under the press to reduce waste. When the job was done, cleaning the press was a chore that took longer than the job of mincing the garlic. The holes were plugged and it wasn't an easy job to get the press clean.

Using the Oxo garlic press is a pleasure. The press fits well in the receptacle. So very little of the clove is not pressed through the holes. The rubber handles make it easy to grip even with wet hands. With the self-cleaning side of the press, cleaning it is a breeze. Just turn the press and close with cleaning side, and all of the holes are cleaned of any garlic. Rinsing with hot water completely cleans it. I don't put the press in the dishwasher because it's so easy to clean after each use.

This is the only garlic press I will use from now on. Now cooking with fresh garlic is a no longer a chore.

Customer Review: More efficient

I use a lot of fresh/raw garlic in my cooking so end up using a garlic press at least once a day. Two of my biggest complaints with most garlic presses are a) difficulty in squeezing down because of the way they are made (I have very small hands) and b) can be hard to clean.

This particular press is one of the best I have used for those two purposes. The handles are thick enough and designed in such a way that it does not take a man's hand/muscles to get the thing to actually press the garlic through the holes. The "holes" cleaner on the reverse of the press is very helpful in cleaning but the primary thing that makes it easier to clean is that the actual holes of the press are slightly bigger than any press I have used before. This gets you a texture that is closer to "minced" vs. the very fine texture of most presses. The bigger holes make it easier and faster to clean any misc. garlic fibers out of the holes of the press.

All in all I am very pleased. As long as it holds up longer than my last one that only lasted a year before the hinge broke I will be very pleased indeed!

Customer Review: Poorly designed for washing
Summary: 1 Stars

I have used the Oxo garlic press for a number of years. After cleaning in the dishwasher, water collect's in the handles so I have leave them off. But the real pain is that water also leak's behind the black plastic piece that clean's out the garlic residue so I had to pry it off with a screwdriver.
I have to leave off the handles and the plastic piece to keep out the water.

The whole thing is made of shiney pot metal not stainless steel. Only the handles are stainless so they can call it stainless and it looks pretty when new. Now the chamber behind the plastic cleaner is badly corroded where the dishwasher liquid sat before I removed it as well as the whole thing is corroding.

I also have a Oxo can opener with black plastic handles so I have to leave them off as well or water is trapped in the dishwasher.

It seem's that the design team for Oxo like's the look of black and chrome but they never use them in the real world.

I am going to buy one of solid stainless steel presses, Kuhn Rikon or Rosle from Amazon that will last forever.

This is my third garlic press. The last one worked fine until I tried to press a large clove of garlic, and it sprung and I had to fight to get the press out of the little basket. Cuisinart Garlic Press with ABS Handle, Black It didn't work right after that. I don't think that will happen with this press. First of all the chamber for the garlic is large enough to accommodate a large clove or a couple small ones, and since it's one piece, there's no grater basket to worry with. This press has some weight to it and you don't have to baby it for fear of it breaking, just pop in the clove and press as hard as you like. I don't peel the garlic and all that's left over is the skin. To remove that, just flip the handle over and the rubber teeth on the other side will poke the skin up enough to be pulled out. This is a great press and it beats the garlic shredding devices that are on the market now by a long shot. Mario Batali Garlic Slicer
