Customer Review: Fixed mine (broken adjuster)

I have had three of these, first one was thrown out when the tensioning nut broke, bought a second one, and the nut in it broke also. Sent that one back to OXO, and they sent me a new one. After a few months that one broke too! The tensioning nut is a very obvious quality problem with this slicer, as the feedback here and other places indicate. It should be made from metal, or at least have a metal thread insert in it.
Being a retired design engineer, and a machinist in a previous life, I decided to fix mine once and for all. Having a nice metal lathe in my basement, I made a new nut from stainless steel, now I expect the slicer to outlast me.
I did have another issue, the smooth rounded surface of the arm allowed the wire to slip down occasionally, fixed that by cutting a shallow narrow groove in the surface with my Dremel tool. A small triangular file would work too.
Others have stated that it is hard to slice various slice thicknesses. I do not agree, as I can slice any thickness I want up to the maximum spacing of the wire from the roller. It just takes varying the angle of the handle to the cheese surface to get whatever thickness you want, easily. It does roll off at the end of the cut before the wire goes through, so I just cut from one side, then on the next cut flip the cheese over and cut from the other side to even out the cut edges.
Overall, this is the best design of a cheese slicer I have seen, but needs a little more attention by the OXO designers to make it excellent.
