Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of OXO Good Grips Stainless Food Scale with Pull-Out Display

Customer Review: Excellent Scale (Amended Review)
Summary: 4 Stars

Update to review below: My scale is only one month old and the surface--the stainless steel portion--is corroding. I live near the ocean so the salt air is getting it. The one I had before for 5 years or so never rusted at all, so I assume OXO has gone to a lower grade steel. Unfortunate for those of us in salty environments, but the scale is still a very good one functionally.

I bought one of the Oxo Good Grips scales about 5 years ago and I have to admit that it broke. The on/off button finally quit working. But I like the scale so much that I bought an identical one. The size is great for the kitchen--not too big, but large enough that it can handle large bowls with the pull-out display. It is easy to keep clean. I have returned my older one to the Oxo people hoping they can replace the part or the unit. I will enjoy having a second scale and would probably use it in my workshop.

Customer Review: died within a month of purchase
Summary: 1 Stars

I bought this scale for my kitchen at home and an Escali primo for weighing portions at work. The Escali is still going strong, but the OXO died after less than a month. Replacing the batteries did not help. I am very disappointed, since the OXO cost quite a bit more than the Escali and I'd come to rely on OXO as having high quality products.

One thing I did not like about the OXO before it died was that it would time out faster than I could add things to a casserole dish before baking. So I'd have to turn it back on and re-tare as I added things. Not a huge deal, but less convenient than using the Escali.

The OXO decided to break just before I needed it to weigh my portions at a BBQ. Fortunately I had a Polder spring-loaded scale I could use as a backup. Less accurate, but at least I had some kind of estimate to track.

I ordered an Escali to replace the OXO.

Customer Review: Almost a good scale, but not so much
Summary: 2 Stars

This scale does what it was designed for: it weighs things. You can quickly zero it out and it quickly measures what you're weighing. My gripe is you can't change the display of ounces from fraction to decimal. When bread recipes call for .675 ounces of something, it helps to dust off your high school mathematics and mentally convert the number to 5/8, which really isn't accurate (see why I need a scale that does decimals?). Also, when it gets above 16 ounces it starts to read things in terms of pounds and ounces instead of staying on just ounces. This makes it difficult to have to then remember there are 16 oz. in a pound then count up from there to get the right about of ounces. It would've been helpful to have more display options instead of just two. It would've been nice if Oxo got rid of the useless light (who bakes in the dark?) and thought more about the display programming.

Customer Review: Just OK while it lasted
Summary: 2 Stars

Can't believe that others rave about this scale so much. Firstly, don't try to weigh under 15 grams/about 1/2 ounce--it's just not accurate. Secondly, after it "times out" you are supposed to be able to recall the previous weight and continue--it's never worked it just re-set and you had to start all over again. Thirdly, the metal weighing plate has seriously discolored and looks like rusting (although it isn't) and nothing will get it clean and shiny again. Fourthly, I agree with other reviewers that fractional pounds should be in decimals--not fractions. And finally, after less than a year (when you could get it to turn on at all), it just started giving gibberish on the display--sometimes words, sometimes single letters, sometimes nothing. Batteries were exchanged to no avail. It's now useless. For something costing as much as it does, it should be better quality!

Customer Review: This Oxo scale takes home the prize!
Summary: 5 Stars

I own 3 other scales-2 of a similar style - battery powered with digital readout and one of the old fashion analog type scales of which I like the look but is not quite as accurate. The other two digital scales do not offer the advantage of being able to pull out the display when a bowl or other item covers the readout (which happens more often than you might think).

I paid more for my other scales and none are as easy to use nor as accurate as this one. In a nutshell, within the confusing world of scales (who would have thought?), save yourself the time and trouble and just start and end with this one. The display will also light when needed and is a nice blue color when on. I place a sheet of plastic wrap over the scale before weighing an item if i don't first place it in a bowl. That way, it's a quick and easy clean up!
