Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of OXO Good Grips Stainless Food Scale with Pull-Out Display

Customer Review: 6 months with the Oxo 1130800 food scale
Summary: 5 Stars

I purchased the Oxo food scale about 6 months ago. Giving it 5 stars because we haven't found anything to complain about regarding it's form or function thus far. My wife and I enjoy cooking (and eating, too) so this scale gets regular usage in our kitchen. Good for dieters or regular cooking. I guess if you wanted pounds and ounces in decimal fraction form, that would be something to gripe about. For me, no sweat, eh? I guess I'm just old-fashioned-- I can work with 5/8 instead of 0.625 oz.
I know this is probably a boring review, but the darn thing works great! I have had occasion to use the pull-out display feature as well as the back-lit display; very handy features if you need 'em, and neither adds any inconvenience otherwise in normal usage. One of the niftier features is the display icon that lets you know if and when you're nearing the scale's 11 lb. capacity, which really is ordinarily adequate for our kitchen use. I also like the stainless steel platform-- it's easily cleaned. Battery life seems adequate-- so far still on the first set of AAA batteries. I would recommend or give it as a gift based on our experience thus far-- no complaints, eh!

Customer Review: I use it several times a week
Summary: 5 Stars

We had one of those cheap little scales that was...a cheap little scale. This scale is so much better! It's easy to use, easy to see the numbers, and easy to clean.

The zero function is important to us because most of our newer recipes use weight instead of volume for the dry ingredients. I turn on the unit, put the mixing bowl on the scale, push the zero function, and add ingredients. I can zero out each time I add dry ingredients to the bowl. If I need 9oz of flour and 1oz of sugar I add the flour, zero out, and add the sugar. It's just as easy as that.

We have some large bowls that would make displays on most scales difficult to see. The display on this unit pulls away from the scale and that's a very convenient feature.

We researched food scales for several weeks. This one fit every requirement we had on our list. We are pleased with our purchase.

A side note: one reviewer commented on the difficulty of reading a fraction instead of decimal. Normally I would agree about using decimals instead of fractions; but, in this case the recipes use fractions so fractions make sense to display.

Customer Review: So far, I love it
Summary: 5 Stars

My old scale (Polder, 6 years old) finally gave up the ghost recently, after misreading weights by as much as 100%, which really botched some homemade soap. I ordered the OXO based on reviews, and the fact that I didn't want to waste my time on a cheap scale. I love the large, square surface, and I love the pull-out screen. That makes weighing a large batch of oils for soaps so much easier, since the pot I use will fit on the scale, and even if it didn't, I could just pull the screen out. I love it that it weighs accurately within a few grams (that's accurate enough for me, anyway), and that the tare (zero) option is smooth as butter, and it's so easy to find a storage place, with such a slim design.

I did once have the problem of the scale timing out and turning itself off as I was trying to do a quick substitution in a recipe when I ran out of the first ingredient. I was sad, and prepared the substitution trying to remember how many grams it had read already, and then when I turned it back on, it had saved my place! Yay! I'm pretty happy with my OXO. Good design, accurate weighing, use it all the time.

Customer Review: Accurate easy to use scale
Summary: 4 Stars

This is a great scale. I was looking for a small digital scale that was easy to use and accurate. I send packages for my small business and needed accurate weights for USPS and determining online shipping costs. Additionally, I am a homebrewer and needed an accurate and easy to use scale for measuring ingedients. This fits the bill in both cases. The Tare function or "zero" button is great for allowing you to have a container on the scale and then zero it to add your actual ingredients to insure accurate measurements. I use this often when adding hops or grains to my brew and need to know in exact ounces what is being added. The blue light up display is great for when it is dim in the room. The display is big and clear and easy to read. The pullout display is great for when you have large bowls on the scale. My only complaint/suggestion would be to have the scale read in decimals for all measurements. It shows "2 1/2 Oz." or "2 3/4 Oz." instead of 2.5 Oz. or 2.75 Oz. Other than that, this is a great scale. Buy it!

Customer Review: Terrific Kitchen Food Scale
Summary: 5 Stars

I'd been toying with the idea of getting a digital scale for a long time. Some time ago, America's Test Kitchen (PBS) did a product comparison of lots of kitchen digital scales on their show. This is the model they recommended, but I was still reluctant to fork over the $$$.

More and more, however, ATK has been showcasing recipes in which they weighed ingredients, rather than measured them. It pushed me over the edge-- I bought this scale.

I can't say enough about how glad I am that I spent the money. There's nothing like working with the right tools, and that's true for everything in life, not just cooking! The scale has come in handy for a multitude of uses. It has met and exceeded my expectations, which were high to begin with.

It's especially fun to weigh our portions (even on the yummy Baked Ruffles to go alongside a lunchtime sandwich!) and see how much we are eating!

I can also recycle our old postal scale, since this thing is dynamite! (and easier to use!)
