Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of OXO Good Grips Smooth Edge Can OpenerCustomer Review: Useless - unable to open many cans Summary: 1 Stars
I bought this because I saw a friend using one and thought it was cool. "no more sharp edges - why would you NOT want one?"
Unfortunately many, many can lids are sealed with glue. After you cut through the can lid, which often requires 2 full passes, the lid does not easily pull off. Instead you must use the "beak" attachment to pry the lid off. This can be physically difficult (which means I'm called into the kitchen to pull the sword out of the stone). About 5% of cans I encounter are still impossible to open this way, and I have to pull out my ugly, rusty, falling apart "traditional" opener to complete the task.
10 minutes to open a can? Memorizing which brands use glue? No way! I will donate this gizmo to some unlucky person, and will buy the "traditional" OXO can opener. Do yourself a favor and follow suit.
Customer Review: No sharp edges on the can, but... Summary: 3 Stars
Watch out for the edges on the packaging! Given that there is no such thing as good clamshell packaging, this thing came in what is some of the worst I ever encountered. Thick, stiff, fully contoured, lethally edged when cut open. Get a clue, Oxo--ditch the entry-proof plastic.
As for the can opener itself, it seems fine, but a full review will have to wait until I get the bandages off my fingers. I guess I can say it will probably work for the handicapped since I could open a can with it just now, but I don't think products for use by the handicapped are actually supposed to turn previously fully functional people into the handicapped. ;) I'd suggest buying some other well-reviewed edge-opening bead-cutting can opener if you have a choice. Unfortunately, none of the pictures of this one showed you'd need a chain saw to get to it when delivered.
Customer Review: Do not buy this opener Summary: 1 Stars
We first bought one about four years ago and it worked great. Slowly it started to skip and you had to go around the can twice, then three times, then four and finally it stopped working. The grip just does not close enough to make a clean cut. To Oxo's credit, they replaced that one without question. The second one is now only three months old and is failing. We keep an old fashion opener around, which is thirty years old and has never failed. We like the idea of the lid remover over the can opener, but are not sure what to do next. There are several other openers of this type that have generally mixed reviews. Cooks like one that is $38, that is a lot for one to fail after a year. I suspect that we will continue to use the replacement Oxo until it completely fails, then return it under their life time warranty. We will always keep out trusty can opener.
Customer Review: Had this for years... like new Summary: 5 Stars
I've had this can opener for almost four years, and I have no complaints. The first time I used this, I thought that it wasn't working. It literally severs the lid from the can, and it took me almost 15 minutes to figure out how to get the lid off. But after you get the hang of it, it's a breeze.
I bought these primarily because they were dishwasher safe and I hate the build-up that gets on can openers. I also have something against electric can openers. Yuck. A bonus for me was the safety cut on the lid, a nice thing for an extremely clumsy chef--it leaves a dull edge that's almost impossible to cut yourself on. These would be great if you have younger children in your house. I've had some difficulty lately, but I've noticed it's mostly on a certain brand of food, so I think it has more to do with their cans then my can opener.
Customer Review: Great opener if you don't expect it to open EVERY can Summary: 1 Stars
Complaint #1: Too bulky, how much drawer space do you really want to devote to a can opener?
Complaint #2: Maybe it's just my unit, but the *@#& opener does not open certain cans. INFURIATING. I never write Amazon reviews and here I am. That's how bad it is. My opener tends to have problems with GOYA Garbanzo Beans. It basically half-opens the cans, necessitating me to pry open the can, using the attached "lid plyers." Sometimes that is not enough and I have to resort to more serious hardware.
Thankfully, Oxo stands behing all their products, so I am currently in the process of exchanging this unit for a more traditional opener. While going through the exchange process, I thought I'd write a review here on Amazon, to make people aware of possible struggles they may have with this product.
