Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of OXO Good Grips Smooth Edge Can OpenerCustomer Review: 1st Disappointment with OXO Summary: 3 Stars
It took a little while for me to figure out how to use this product. When I finally set it on the can and started to feel some resistance I didn't even realize I was opening the can. You have to actually "pry" the can top off. While it works ok for normal every day size cans, I busted every knuckle I have when I started opening up the large club or bulk size cans. The instead of moderate resistance, I found I had to practically force the crank to get the blade to cut through the lip on the larger cans. Because the lip is thicker on the large cans, I had to go around twice in some cases. I have always loved Good Grips and was so thrilled to move up from my less expensive, trusty original Good Grips $10 can opener. My recommendation? Just buy the cheaper one and save your knuckles. Between the hassle of a harder crank and the difficulty of use - it just isn't worth the trouble.
Customer Review: Well worth the money!!!!! Best can opener you'll ever own. Summary: 5 Stars
I wanted a hand-held can opener that would leave no sharp edges, & after reading reviews I chose the OXO Good Grips Smooth Can Opener. This can opener lives up to its name! Absolutely no sharp edges whatsoever, and it is incredibly easy to use. After having an inexpensive Swingaway brand for so long, this one is a dream. I no longer have to fight with opening cans....this one glides effortlessly around the lid---very, very smoothly. I actually look forward to opening cans now! I am amazed every time and wish I had known about this one long ago. Another added bonus worth mentioning is that after opening the can, you are able to lift the lid off & throw it away without ever having to touch it. This can opener opens cans cleanly with no mess, smooth lids/cans, with very little effort to do so. OXO Good Grips Smooth Edge Can Opener is well-worth the [money] paid for it!!!
Customer Review: Another great Good Grips product Summary: 5 Stars
In the Good Grips line, OXO has taken a wide assortment of traditional, familiar kitchen tools and radically improved them through some design and engineering tinkering. In many cases, you don't even realize how badly the old versions worked until you try the Good Grips version. This can opener is no exception; it works far better than any can opener I've ever used. Make sure you read the directions on the packaging, because you align it on the can a bit differently than a traditional hand-operated can opener. But once you master that, you're golden. No more having the opener "jam" or go "off track" halfway through the process, no more having to tear off a can lid that was only partially cut through by the opener, no more having to muster all of your muscle to open a can, and no more sharp edges on to nick your fingers as you remove the lid. It rocks.
Customer Review: Superior to Kuhn Rikon Summary: 5 Stars
After using the Oxo smooth edge opener for years, I thought mine was wearing out because I was beginning to have difficulty removing the lids on certain cans. Bought the Kuhn Rikon after high recommendation by Cook's Illustrated and reviews on Amazon and found that actually the Oxo was much superior. Somehow I had developed some bad techniques for using the Oxo such as pressing the can opener down hard on the lid. I have found that the technique that works best for me is to lay the Oxo on top of the can rather than pressing it down, only partially closing the opener handles when starting to twist the knob, then slowly closing the handles as the can starts turning. This opener is much more comfortable to hold than the Kuhn Rikon, which is hard plastic without the rubbery grip that Oxo gadgets usually have. I wouldn't recommend this to a left-handed person, however.
Customer Review: Don't waste the extra money Summary: 2 Stars
We have been going through quality can opener nightmare lately, every single can opener I buy is junk. In fact the one I bought just because I was at wits end, at the Dollar Tree, lasted longer then many high priced can openers, including this one. I saw this and saw $20 for a can opener? But then I thought I am so over it, I am going to splurge for top of the line. I was very excited about ending the nightmare. About 2-3 weeks later, just stopped working, you could fight with it sometimes and manage to finish opening the can you have partially open, but most the time I had to pull the Dollar Tree one out and struggle through that to get my can open. I am very disappointed in oxo. I have always trusted their products without doubt, now I will look on with doubt on them as well. BTW I think this is my first review, if that tells you how strongly I feel about this lol
