Customer Review: It does the job
Summary: 4 Stars

First and foremost... shipping was Amazon.com fast and as always very happy with the delivery. Now onto the product... I have seen and used many of these can openers, yes I am referring to ones like this that detach the lid verses cutting the lid. This one does the job and like all of the varieties I have used, takes some time to get familiar with the lid removal technique. It one works and does a great job on a one time around the can, and the grip is oxo comfortable. Now for the actual lid removal... Most of the ones I have used, use a tilt and lift technique, this one does not. This product has a pair of pinchers that you have to remove the opener from the can, after you did your circle around the can and use these small pinchers to lift off the lid... Okay it does a great job, the pinchers are firm and hold a variety of lids, BUT they are small, smaller than a needle nose plyers, so you have to get down and visualize the lid lip to catch the pinchers... so for this it would get a less than great review, but then again, it does the job and safetly...

Customer Review: Can opener Goodbyes, and hello's!
Summary: 5 Stars

This useful kitchen gadget cleverly cuts the side seam of a can so easily and cleanly; I didn't know it had actually worked at all, till I picked off the top with the small "pliers" attached on the side of the opener!

The top fits easily back on again, if needed. There still is a tiny bit of metallic chips and whatever's stuck on the side of the seam, that can possibly fall into the food within the can or while pouring from the can...certainly no better or worse than with old fashioned openers.

Since I orignally write this review, (and gave the old can openers to Goodwill) I found a minor problem..It doesn't open "rectangular" cans, say tins of sardines or clams etc. It will open curved surfaces all day, and open the curved cornes of a "rectangular" can, however when it gets to the "straightaway" sides of the rectangle tin or can, the handle then hits the can, the opener is stopped "cold", and can't go any further. So don't throw away the old style can opener if you may use the rectangular cans.

Customer Review: It just doesn't cut it.

I first fell in love with the smooth edge style can opener when they first came out about ten years ago. There great. You don't have to fish the cut lid out of your chili and you can add a bit of water to the empty can hold the lid on and shake it for a good rinse. I don't remember the brand that I bought (it wasn't OXO) and it worked great. It eventualy wore out and I looked for a replacement, and found the Oxo Good Grips. It just dosen't cut it--"LITERALY" the blade that should cut the outside rim, doesn't cut all the way through the first layer of mettal. I usualy have to go around the can twice--which creats small metal slivers that are dificult to see, but easy to feel "OUCH"--and even then it only works about half the time. Often if it fails on one end, and you flip it over to try the other--assuming the can has the lip on both sides--it will leek. And if the can is dented, for get it!
Maybe the one I got was a "dud". At any rate I am looking for a new can opener and I will not be ordering another one of these.

Customer Review: Never going back
Summary: 5 Stars

I read a review of this smooth edge can opener and decided we needed one for our daily pet foot can opening ceremony. We had cut our fingers more than once on pet food cans and I was looking for something different. I've noticed two big differences with this opener compared to a standard one: one doesn't cut one's fingers because all edges are smooth, and it handles mildly deformed cans better than our old "typical" can opener. We've had a lot of can openers over the years, both hand and electric, and I can honestly say that this one is the best one we've had. It took us a couple of times to figure out how to use the built in mini-jaws/tweezer/grips to remove the cut top but that was the only user interface issue we ran into. For the first week or so we collected the tops of the pet food cans because we were sure that there must be some useful thing we could do with them. :) We've gone back to just putting them in the recycle bin along with the rest of the can. :) We won't go back to the old style of can opener!

Customer Review: Kind to my fingers--and little animals!
Summary: 5 Stars

The OXO Smooth Edge can opener is, in my opinion, a wonderful product. Not only does it appear to be safer to USE than most, but I was thrilled to find that the resulting (opened) can and lid have no sharp edges that can harm my fingers--and little animals who might be rummaging through garbage bags in some dump.

Because I am an animal lover, I typically take cans that I open, rinse them out and then stuff towel paper in them afterwards, before throwing them in the garbage. Now, I don't have to do that.

Figuring that other animal lovers would also like to know about this product, I wrote to the OXO people last year and suggested that they market the product on that basis. Public sentiment against the cruelty of animals is at an all-time high. And we do so love our pets. Why shouldn't the OXO company benefit from being able to promote their exceptional product as one that is not only safer for people, but also animal friendly? OXO, thank you for your product.
