Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of OXO Good Grips Smooth Edge Can OpenerCustomer Review: no more electric can openers Summary: 5 Stars
I was hesitant at first on getting another non electric can opener. I tried that one they advertise on tv and it never worked well. So I'm used to cheap electric can openers from kmart, walmart, walgreens, etc.
But they do brake down after a couple years, easily get dirty, can be a pain to clean, use electricity, and tend to not open a can very effectively at times. So i told my wife i was going to get this smooth edge can opener. And she told me fine but I still had to get her an electric can opener because she wanted one that was easy and worked.
Well I got this after reading all the reviews here and elsewhere and I'm glad I did. And so is my wife, now it seems it was her idea?!
The product is easy to use, just place it on the lid, squeeze the handle to tighten it, and give it a couple of easy turns (very little effort involved in turning the handle), and your done.
Very simple, doesn't get dirty, no extra charge for electric, and if and when the blade wears out, i will definitely get another one. Worth every penny. And best of all, its portable and you can pack it away instead of leaving it on a counter plugged in.
Customer Review: Fantastic!! Then.....frustrating and non-functional Summary: 2 Stars
Like many other reviewers, I purchased one of these newfangled (I just turned 40 so I have to use words like that) : ) openers. It was great!!!! at first....... Eventually it starts to lose its cutting ability and can no longer open effectively. Now, I have to go around several times and then grab the edge of the lid with the built-in grabber and peel/bend the lid up slowly. This actually takes a good deal of strength and one day I'm certain something is going to go flying across the room and I may get accused of attempting to donkey punch my girlfriend from afar (I would never do such a thing, probably!) At the very least, I am going to re-decorate my kitchen in black bean (thats probably a real color somewhere).
so as it stands, I am torn - I dont know if I should invest in another one. They are much superior to the old school method but don't last (hmmmm...a common theme these days). I will contact OXO and see what they say. For a company that has a premium marketing strategy (and cost along with it), I certainly hope they have customer service that matches. I hope they figure out the problem. Great concept.
Customer Review: Takes too much practice Summary: 2 Stars
As with all my reviews regarding kitchen gear, they are from two perspectives: mine (of course), and my spouse's. I'm just a regular kitchen schmo, but she is a professional chef who has attended culinary school.
Personally, I really like this can opener. I'm kind of a sucker for a neat gimmick, and this one is pretty clever: cutting under the edge of cans to eliminate sharp edges and make the can resealable. Cans always open on the first try for me and I love not cutting myself when I reach into the can.
However, I'm the only one that seems to think this way. My spouse *hates* this thing. 90% of the time, it jams, slips off, or otherwise fails her. She's not the only one that fails at using this thing - every friend we've had over, including plenty of culinary school friends - also have had great difficulty using this thing.
Since it's my firm belief that a kitchen tool, especially a common one, should be intuitive, I can't really give this can opener a high rating. But, if the idea appeals to you - and you have a standard can opener as backup - go ahead and give it a shot.
Customer Review: Eventually, I loved it Summary: 4 Stars
I won't lie, this can opener took a few tries for me to be able to properly operate. There were a few times where I wasn't doing it correctly, and then the rest of the times, I had effectively opened the cans, but didn't realize it.
This actually works. Once you've mastered the usage of the can opener, you will actually be able to open a can, run your fingers over the edge, and not cut yourself. That is really the product's largest benefit - which is a very good thing, because that is why you should choose it, of course.
One thing to note - with traditional openers, I usually would remove the lid, scoop out whatever I was using, and then replace the little top. With this, you can't really do that so much. I guess it's a good time to start dumping your leftover canned food into a little storage container, since that is probably the best way to preserve the food's integrity (as much as one can preserve the integrity of canned food, of course...).
One star removed because of how long it took me personally to get the hang of it. A wonderful product, though!
Customer Review: Outstanding can opener Summary: 5 Stars
I love this can opener. Once you get used to the unorthodox way you place it on the can, you really start to appreciate this extraordinary tool. It was definitely an adjustment when I first started to use it. The entire cutting process is much more subtle than it is with a conventional can opener. The subtle initial "bite" takes getting used to, as does the cutting around the can all the way to the finish. The first time you use it, it doesn't seem like it cuts the can at all. Then you use the nifty lid-pulling teeth to lift the top of the can off, and it all becomes clear.
I like that it cuts in a way that leaves no sharp edges on the lid or the can. I like that you never have to touch the lid. I also like that the contents of the can rarely get on the opener. My old can opener would routinely get can contents all over the cutting cylinder and gears.
The only thing I've had to be careful about with this opener is using the lid-puller. If you pull too hard, the lid can come off too quickly and splatter contents a bit. If you pull carefully this isn't a problem.
