Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of OXO Good Grips Silicone Pastry Brush

Customer Review: No more bristles in the food!
Summary: 5 Stars

I was so happy when silicon pastry and basting brushes came out a few years ago. They are so much easier to clean and I finally feel like mine is clean when I run it through the dishwasher. These silicon brushes do not burn or singe when used on very hot food or pans and they don't stain. Best of all the bristles don't come out and get stuck on your food. I always hated having to pick off the bristles while cooking or before serving and I inevitably missed one or two. Now that problem is gone. These are a great tool and everyone should have one with fine "bristles" and one with heavier bristles for more generous dispensing. Oxo Good Grips is reliable and produces good products.

Customer Review: Great brush
Summary: 4 Stars

I threw out many bristle brushes before I finally decided to try silicone. What an amazing improvement! I thought I would have to scoop the sauce onto the meat before I could brush it around, but the little center strip with holes (also silicone) holds the liquid like real bristles. It works for everything from garlic butter to thick BBQ sauce. I hear it even works to brush crumbs from delicate cake surfaces. Cooks Illustrated was not wrong on their recommendation to get this brush. I can effectively wash it, unlike other brushes that trap food in the bristles and get really gross and full of bacteria. Plus, you don't get those annoying bristles on your food. Love this!

Customer Review: This brush is great for liquid sauces but don't throw out your regular brushes just yet.
Summary: 4 Stars

The first time I tried using this brush was to butter my ramekins for Panna Cotta. I usually reach for my bristle pastry brush. I had to go back to it since the silicone bristles of the Oxo was too soft for the butter unless it was melted. It should definitely work better with liquids with the small silicone loops under the silicone bristles. Clean up so far has been easier than with regular bristle brushes (dries faster, no staining, and doesn't remain greasy after cleaning).

PROS: Easier to wash clean and dry. Doesn't stain.

CONS: Wimpy silicone means you have to have a liquid for this brush to work.

Customer Review: Try Silicone!
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a great brush! Maybe I have just had bad luck, but it seems like the "regular" bristle brushes I've used would always shed bristles. On or in the food. Not only that, but they were soooo hard to get clean, they always seemed to keep a fine layer of grease.

This cleans like a dream in the dishwasher.

This brush may not work well for some things, like brushing chocolate into molds, but it works especially well for brushing on butter and is also good for wetting the sides of a pan you are making candy or caramel in or for brushing on glazes. I am thinking of ordering a few more just like it.

Customer Review: It works!
Summary: 5 Stars

This lil' pastry brush does a fine job of basting and picking up liquidy things for glazes. The special part is the inner "Swiss cheese" flap in the middle - it picks up the liquid easily by trapping it in the holes, so you can pick up a lot of whatever it is you're using. The brush cleans really easily by whisking it in some soapy water and then rinsing the bristles thoroughly. The bristles have just enough give - pliable, not too firm, not too soft. Compared with other brushes which leave stray stuff in your food, this one is a dream! Little mess, easy to clean, does its job. Bonus: heat resistant. Absolutely recommended.
