Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of OXO Good Grips Silicone Pastry BrushCustomer Review: VERY HAPPY WITH THIS BRUSH. Summary: 5 Stars
I will be the first to admit that I like OXO products and have quite a number of them around. I have yet to be disappointed in any of them. I will also be the first to admit that I do not like change all that much and have fought the good fight in trying to keep my old bristle brushes I have been so fond of. Well I finally broke down and bought one of these things for pastry.
Now I have been using a silicone brush on our outside gas grill and must admit to liking it. Why I did not want to use it on indoor cooking I do not know. Anyway....
This is an excellent brush. As the OXO company tells you, the way these things are designed it holds the liquid longer on the brush than other brands. This particular brush feels perfect in the hand and has a very nice balance to it. Since I do all the dishwashing in our family, I like something that I can stick into the dishwasher and not have to worry about it. This brush cleans up very nice.
I have used this for about a year now. In using the natural bristle brushes I would go through several in a year's time as they washed poorly, retained odors, lost bristles and were constantly clumping up. No problems with this brush in any of those areas. I figure I am getting a better job done and saving money at the same time.
Love this brush. The price here is about two dollars less expensive that what I paid for it at a local retail story.

Customer Review: Throw away your old school pastry brush! (this is for butter, egg wash, etc. For basting, get a bigger one.) Summary: 5 Stars
I've had this brush for years but still see it written up as a top favorite in my cooking magazines. Makes sense. My brush still looks brand new in spite of being used constantly by this avid baker and cook in a two-chef household.
As an art major, we were taught the worst thing you can do to a brush is to put it in hot water. Yet many still use pastry brushes with regular bristles just like a paint brush and the bristles get frizzy, get stained, and can even retain bacteria. Silicone nips those issues in the bud and goes happily into your hottest dishwasher.
They hold butter great for brushing on bread or pastry, or brushing on an egg wash or glaze to something you are cooking. If you are wanting to brush something large like a turkey or whole chicken, you'd want a basting brush rather than a pastry brush. (my basting brush is silicone as well but by another manufacturer.)
No negatives...it's stood the test of time and I love it.
Customer Review: Ideal for basting before indoor grilling. Summary: 5 Stars
I wanted a short handled basting brush primarily for prepping food for indoor grilling (on a Cuisinart Griddler Jr.), and I wanted a brush that would be easier to clean than the bristle basting brushes I've used in the past. By clean I mean that the brush wouldn't retain smells. And I wanted a brush that, unlike brushes with wooden handles and/or parts, could be left in a wet sink. The OXO silicone brush fills the bill perfectly.
I got nervous after using it with liquid smoke, because even after rinsing it with very hot water it still had that hickory smoke smell. But the smell went away completely after soaking the brush in soapy water before rinsing it.
It holds liquids - olive oil, liquid smoke, etc. - just fine.
One thing I like about OXO Good Grips kitchen products in general is that they do indeed have "good grips," and are extremely comfortable and manageable in my large hands.
Customer Review: Best Ever Summary: 5 Stars
Leave it to OXO to perfect the pastry brush. Silicone always beats natrual bristles because you don't end up with bristles stuck in your food and you can thoroughly clean the brush. Put it in the dishwasher if you want. Try that with a natural bristle brush and you will have a clumpy mess on your hands.
The downside of silicone brushes is that they don't hold the liquid very well. OXO has solved this by adding a layer of silicone between the bristles that suspends the liquid. The liquid is released by the pressure of brushing the food. Cook's Illustrated likens the technology to the bubble wands we used to play with as kids. Who knew?!!
The brush feels comfortable in my hand. Although it is not as nimble as bristle brushes or my William Bounds Sili Gourment, this brush has replaced the William Bounds Sili Gourmet brushes as my favorite.
Customer Review: Not a great brush for baking/pastry applications Summary: 2 Stars
I mostly use pastry brushes for just that: brushing melted butter over pastry specifically filo. I was really getting sick of the bristles shedding from my traditional bristle brush and was hoping that this brush would help. Well it does accomplish that: there is no shedding whatsoever. However, it is not as gentle as a bristle brush and pulls and tears the filo. It also doesn't spread the butter on the pastry nicely, more like uneven streaks. It seems to hold a fair amount of butter but the amount that actually gets deposited on the brushing surface is small. It is easy to clean though, so I'll give it a point for that.
So if you're buying this to use for actual baking/pastry applications, I'd say this is not a good brush for you. However if you're using it for brushing melted butter on a pan, waffle iron, etc. then this brush would be fine for the job.
