Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of OXO Good Grips Shrimp Cleaner

Customer Review: It's okay...
Summary: 3 Stars

I really really wanted to like this more than I do. I read all of the reviews that said how easy it was to use, then when I got it there was one comical looking cheesy picture showing how to use it. I am not a cooking novice, but I felt like a real retard trying to use this. Several mangled shrimp later, I finally got the idea, but still continued to mangle the occasional shrimp. And the thing is, I think it took me more time to mangle the shrimp with this thing than to peel shrimp manually. I gave it three stars because if you have a lot of tenacity, and you want to devein and that is really important to you, this will devein the shrimp nicely, if you don't mess up. I just find that this complicates things too much for me about two thirds of the time. Take this as you will.

Customer Review: Doesn't do it for me....
Summary: 1 Stars

I don't like the way this thing works... Luckily, after I ordered it, I found my old cheapie that had been misplaced during our move.

I would suggest saving your money and buying one of the cheap plastic ones that work on the push stroke, and peels the shrimp by breaking the underside instead of cutting the shell down the back. I ruined more shrimp than I peeled with this one. I am hoping to find another use for it! Maybe a grout remover....

I find that rather sad, because I like the other OXO products I have purchased. The large handles prevents my bad finger from locking trying to hold something of small diameter...

Customer Review: Good grips shrimp cleaner has good grip and cleans shrimp
Summary: 4 Stars

I've never used any other shrimp cleaner beyond a good sharp kitchen knife. With that perspective, this works quite well, though not quite as magically as the ad copy might suggest. Maybe 3X as fast as I can do with the kitchen knife. Easy to hold, easy to clean. The instructions don't mention removing both veins (top and bottom) but the cleaner works quickly enough that you'll do that too.

I did snap the tip when using the tool to open a container. Apparently not every tool in the kitchen doubles as a prybar. For the price, I bought one for a neighbor, can buy another to replace my busted tip, and may just stuff one in a stocking this Christmas.

Customer Review: Can't Recommend This Product
Summary: 1 Stars

I bought this tool because I had a good-size quantity of jumbo shrimp (21-25/lb.) to prepare. I was very disappointed with it. Instead of making a clean cut to remove the vein, the tool's serrated edge mangled and shredded the flesh of the shrimp. And using it actually slowed the process down.

Before purchasing the Oxo Shrimp Cleaner, I had been using a paring knife for cleaning raw shrimp. After completely giving up on this product and then doing a little experimenting, my Fiskar scissors turned out to be the quickest and most efficient tool for accomplishing this task.

Customer Review: Saves time, saves frustration
Summary: 5 Stars

I love shrimp but don't like the pre-peeled, frozen variety.
Shrimp shells yield a wonderful broth for seafood dishes.
I get my shrimp fresh from ethnic stores.

So, the OXO shrimp cleaner really does reduce the 3 steps
in shrimp cleaning to 1.5. The 0.5 is for the fastidious
in me that wants to get every little bit of the vein (or digestive
tract - yuck) out. I also remove the vein on the underside.

Sigh! Shrimp cleaning is big work but this little contraption
really helps.
