I have to admit that I have a thing about potato peelers. I think it goes back to the days when I was a little girl and my sister, who was and still is, a little snit, would always weasel her way out of this chore and leave me stuck with it. Anyway, I have spent many years trying to find the perfect peeler and I think I may have just struck the mother load with this one. I have been using it for quite some time now; it is used at least once daily, sometimes more and I could not be happier. I have exactly 14 different peelers in my kitchen drawers, casualties from my restless search. (Yes, that is true...I counted them just a few minutes ago). They have all been retired now.
This peeler is sharp; it actually glides through the peel of a potato and the handle is so comfortable I would probably marry it if I were so inclined to marry anything. I use this one on carrots, potatoes, cucumbers, radishes and turnips. This peeler works equally as well on all of them.
If I had one thing to change about this particular peeler, I would suggest that they lengthen the thing at the end and make it narrower as this would make it easier to remove the eyes and bad places on potatoes.
As a side note: The last two times I was brave enough to have supper at my sister's home (eating her food is like having lunch at a toxic waste dump and I avoid it as much as possible), I noted that she had her husband peeling the potatoes! Poor guy, I know how he must feel....I plan to buy one of these and give it to him next Christmas as a stocking stuffer.

I have been wanting a vegetable peeler that would be able to handle peeling winter squash. This is the perfect peeler for that task. I was able to peel an entire butternut squash in a very few minutes yesterday. The peeler sliced through the skin as if it were butter. There was no hesitation in getting the job done.
My only complaint about the Oxo Good Grips i-Series Swivel Peeler is that it is heavy. That complaint is also what makes this the perfect peeler for the task that I assigned it. I cannot imagine using this peeler to peel carrots or potatoes. It is just too heavy for that.
10/25/09 Addendum:
Last night, while cleaning the peeler, the blade snapped off. My initial thought was that it had slipped its mooring but it actually broke. I've already put a replacement in my shopping cart because it is the best peeler that I've found for peeling winter squash.
I've reduced my initial star rating from 5 stars to 4 stars because of the break.

7 STARS ! Having been a Head Chef (4 STAR Hotel in Hampton Court - Henry VIII's Palace) in a previous life, I know the benefits of using a highly efficient tool to make a boring repetitive task bearable. After thoroughly researching the market, I came a cross this little beauty. It even makes peeling spuds - FUN ! Shush ! don't tell anyone I said that, as I don't want to be thought of as SAD. It does its job superbly well, and is a joy to use.
NOTE: In use, I found the swivel peeler to be better for rounder items such as Spuds, and the Y peeler better for longer items such as Carrots and Parsnips. Horses for courses.
When something exceeds your expectations by a country mile, then it must be really good. BUY IT NOW, you won't regret it. Its macho boyfriend, the i-Series Y Peeler, is also superb, and is also a BUY IT NOW !
If you buy both, you will make them very happy, as they can then canoodle together in the drawer in the dark !

Ever use a peeler that works but the peels are so thick that a potato or carrot is only a shadow of it's former self after peeling? The blade in this peeler is very thin and sharp. I noticed in peeling a cucumber for the first time with this, that the skin was removed effortlessly and quickly, but the peel was shallow enough to leave the vitamin rich inner pith that is just under the skin of most vegetables. The blade has a small plastic snap-on shield to protect it from damage in the drawer and also from losing any skin while digging around to locate it. The blade is also replaceable so that super sharp function will always be there. As all OXO Good Grips, it has a tactile feel and great fit in the hand. FYI it's probably best just to rinse this off and pat dry as opposed to throwing it in a dish washer to keep the blade corrosion free and razor sharp. Who knew peeling potatoes could be less of a chore.Customer Review: Best peeler money can buy

When I first received my i-Series peeler, I was impressed. Heavy, balanced ... wow, couldn't believe I only paid $10.
That was six months ago. Now that I have been using it for a significant period of time I am more impressed than I was initially.
Here's why.
1. The blades are not only incredibly sharp and replaceable, but, you can also flip the blade so that you gain the benefit of using both sides. Most peelers go in the recycling box with one side of the blade still sharp because the blade is permanently fixed.
2. After six months, I am still on my first blade and it's still sharp. You can replace and flip the blade, and since it's removable, you can also thoroughly clean it, which helps keep it sharp.
Every time I show the i-series peeler to someone, they buy it.
OXO did an excellent job designing this product.
