Customer Review: The best mandoline available for under $200.00

I bought a cheapie all plastic mandoline several years ago and used it quite a bit. I admit it wasn't the best but it worked well enough to help me out with slicing potatoes and onions for big batches of potato salad, etc. since I have bad arthritis in my hands. I finally wore out the blades and the search started for a new one.
I wanted a better one since I had used my cheap one a lot but I can't afford a $200.00 one like a friend of mine owns. I bought several and ended up sending them back for one reason or another, usually dull blades or the holder being bulky and difficult to hold. I finally found the OXO and decided to try it because I like OXO products as a whole and the price was reasonable for me.
I think this is a great mandoline. The blade is very sharp and I like the way all the attachments are stored onboard and easily changed by either turning a knob until it clicks, or pulling the blade out, turning it over and reinserting it. The holder is also much better and easier to hold than other brands I tried.
One thing I also like very much is that the slice thickness can be easily adjusted along with the strip and julienne blade attachments, and with the waffle blade you can even make waffle fries. Custom crudite is a breeze with this.
The main part of the mandoline is dishwasher safe although it is recommended you hand wash the blades. That is no problem for me. I don't ever put my good knives in the dishwasher either so I wouldn't put the blades in even if it said it was OK to.
I have heard people say they have purchased mandolines, tried them once or twice, and never used them again. I would tell those people that using a mandoline does take a little bit of practice. It is fairly easy to slice the harder vegetables like potatos with it but softer things like tomatoes can be very tricky. Even a potato should be sliced by starting it at the very top and sliding it smoothly all the way down the blade with a light to medium pressure. If you use too much pressure you just squash whatever you are trying to slice. The blade is sharp and you only need to apply enough pressure to hold your vegetable on the cutting surface.
The trick to tomatoes is to choose firm ones and hold them close to the blade and slide them back and forth just slightly as you run them down the blade. If you do this and get your thickness adjustment correct you can get tomatoe slices almost thin enough to read through. Just perfect for sandwiches.
If you still have a problem, try googling "how to use a mandoline". Someone told me there are videos to help you now.
I didn't give this mandoline a perfect score because I still think the holder could be improved but believe me, it's the best of a bad lot unless you are willing to spend a LOT more money. If it bothers you that much you can always get a cut proof glove but I don't like those either. Just remember the blades are SHARP and you can slice off part of your finger before you know it.
